The Joyo British Sound JF16 is an amp simulation pedal. An amp simulation pedal allows you to connect it to a PA, or DAW, as your guitar rig. It can also be used with a guitar amp as a normal boost and tone-shaping pedal.
There are a lot of reasons to use an outboard solution like this with your DAW versus an amp sim plugin. Especially in some situations. One, it's highly portable, and once you own it you should be familiar with it and have some favorite settings. You can take it to any recording session, anywhere, and have familiar, baseline tones to work with.
Meanwhile, the DAW computer isn't doing any heavy lifting creating the sound. The pedal creates the sound, the DAW just records it. The pedal connects to the preamp, and the sound goes into the computer.
Depending on your setup, it's an easy way to record with multiple musicians, each with different mixes, and no concerns about latency and how to route an amp sim plugin to everyone. It would be the same as recording with a mic'ed amp, except since the amp is a pedal, there's no amp spill in the room. The sound is in the headphones and there is no live guitar amp. This makes it particularly good if you know the part you are tracking is a scratch guitar track. Not only are your tracks clean of any guitar bleed in the room, but they are clean of guitar bleed from a guitar part that's not necessarily going to be in the final mix. And of course, you can keep the track if you want.
I didn't mention it in the video, but with a splitter, you could also record to two tracks- One is the guitar through the JF16 and the other is the guitar direct. This would give you the option to re-amp the guitar part later in the session.
Although I didn't use it in the video, I've added a Donner micro-digital reverb pedal to the chain just for a little more variety. Maybe I should do a review of it as well. You can always add reverb/FX in post, or even live if you're using something like an X32, XR18, Presonus digital mixer, etc. as your interface.
Here are a few words from the Joyo website:
"With the gain knob and voice knob hovering around the 9 'o' clock point you can happily conjure Claptonesque tones from your guitar, winding them both up to about 12 'o' clock will get you a 'Woodstock' sound reminiscent of a certain Mr Hendrix. As you go on from there you'll get more and more drive as you turn up the gain knob and voice knob to taste. Led Zeppelin, Gary Moore, Slash, Pete Townshend, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen & many more artists chose to use Marshall and you can replicate their tones thanks to the British sound."
"Perhaps the greatest feature of this pedal is the fact that it has inbuilt cabinet emulation meaning you can go from the pedal directly to a mixing desk, a DAW or directly to your computer/laptop with a jack to usb lead. So this pedal is essentially a DI. You can use it instead of an amp and it can save your gig if your amp fails, just put it at the end of all your other pedals and set it clean like your amp then just take the output from the American sound straight to the desk. Gig saved. Or by going direct into a DAW or even your laptop you can record direct from the pedal."

Best demo out there of this pedal. I have a Xotic SL Drive but it's not doing what I want it to do, and the single Tone knob isn't versatile enough. I thinking of getting this one (I have previously owned the AC Tone, and I am currently using and loving the American Sound for my Dire Straits project). Sounds really good here!

Well presented video, I use the American, for the reasons you say, a Caline Blue Sky transparent overdrive works well with it.

Thanks... I need to circle back around to this sometime and demo it with the IR pedal (and reverb).

I own one of these and the Joyo American (Fender preamp), they are pretty great but I find are much better with a cab IR or cab pedal.

I was tempted to get the American pedal but opted for the British pedal. I mounted the British pedal, a verb pedal, and the Digitech IR pedal to a pedal board just this weekend to make them a little more portable. I need to record something for KZbin demoing the reverb and demoing the IR pedal in combination with the British pedal now that I have them sorted out on the board.

Pretty decent pedal. Should used the output control to even out the levels.

I wanted something for a highly portable, easy to use, 'amp in a box'. This definitely met expectations. Not in the video, but I also added a Digitech IR pedal and a Donner reverb micro reverb pedal to the chain after this. They take it to another level of realism and tonal options. If anyone is interested, I can do a video where I add those to the equation and review those as well. Alan Hamilton yeah man I’d love to see that. I recently bought the pedal (Harley Benton - I believe they are the same) and was wondering what she’d sound like with an IR pedal etc

Were you using an IR or any kind of high frequency cut from an equalizer? My Joyo American sound through a PA speaker sounds fizzy, but the British does not in your video. I wonder if that can be attributed to the speaker emulation in the Marshall pedal being better than in the American sound?

I have an IR pedal but it was NOT used in this video. I always intended to do a follow-up video with the IR pedal if there was enough interest in that, but never got around to it. It's been a while since I did this video and I don't remember specifically what, if any EQ I used, but I know I wouldn't have done anything radical to the top end. In fact, I'm thinking I didn't use any post-production EQ at all just to show the pedal's own tonal variety and out of the box sound.

can this pedal be used to play some evh?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
It'll get you a base. And it's got plenty of gain to play with. A variable IR cab sim helps even more. And of course adding reverb to liven it up. If you're going into a DAW, the Waves CLA "Guitar" plugin works well since it can add some reverb and light chorus (that fattens things) and is pretty simple to use... Even if you don't use an IR cab sim. And that can get you pretty close with this pedal. But, Eddie always had a distinctive attack with the way he played, and then that phaser, and that reverb (especially the early albums), and later delays more too). So you need that hardware too... and to emulate his picking style and attack as much as possible. There's a lot of ingredients to Eddie's sounds, not the least of which was Eddie himself.

Why has no one put up a British Sound vs real marshall?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 2 жыл бұрын
Probably most people that have a Marshall don't bother with buying the pedal ;) It definitely has the essence of a Marshall, and when used with an IR pedal (or an IR in a DAW) really gets you that vibe. Especially, adding a bit of reverb. Comparing it against a real Marshall, and trying to emulate it each would be an interesting experiment.

Is this or the american better to play arctic monkey stuff?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. Maybe someone else will chime in that has experience with both. My guess is that either would work because the AMs don't use a ton of gain... So the British pedal has a range of gain that would go from good to way too much... Whereas the American would need a higher gain setting because I'm assuming it doesn't have as much potential gain overall as the British pedal. But I could be wrong since I don't have an American to compare. So, I think either would work... I'm just not sure which might be voiced as the 'best' option.
