You may have seen these around and wondered why you'd ever want one if you had, say, a 500W bass amp from say, Hartke. Well, in this video I'll explain why I sprang for the JOYO MA-10B portable bass amp. I bought it used, which is a key detail.

I’m a lifetime pro working bass player I have this exact little amp and love it, it’s a great great portable practice amp that sounds great for its intended purpose. When I’m practicing or learning songs for gigs I just pop this little amp on my computer table and it works great, with or without headphones being used. I bought it new a few months ago on Amazon for around $50 and couldn’t be happier with the purchase. On a side note my gigging amps are all Hartke gear with 4 and 5 string bass’s. As a lifelong pro player this is one of the best most convenient practice amps I’ve ever purchased, I always use the clean sound and never use the overdrive.

This little amp is not a joke. I highly recommend to anyone who looks for a mobile solution. Volume is more than enough for practicing, tone is really good, it is visually satisfying and very lightweight.

No question. Some days I miss having it handy when I just want to plug in where I happen to be rather than at my Hartke amp or my desk. I'm really not seeing much else out there (on Amazon) that is comparable for less.

It’s a great practice amp. Not loud, no low bass, so no vibrating the walls and the neighbours. Put the amp close to you, a P bass with little distortion (or more) will sound great. A clean bass will have nice midlows. An active bass sound ok too. Use it too with my acoustic bass, at least I can be heard next to a dreadnaught. Guitars will tend to sound a bit jazzy, warm if you like. You can play guitar or bass via a multi-effect that you plug in aux. Or just play backing stuff on aux. Got a cheap ukelele strap to connect to the two sidescrews. Got mine new for €32, a year ago. Enjoy that thing! For more noise with different bands and rehearsals I use a markbass, a swr and an old fender 100W anyway.

I've got one of these, it's plenty loud for practicing, the trick is raising the gain, if you have it low, doesn't matter where you set the volume it will sound quiet. I recommend it if you're looking for a easy little practice amp. You do have to use batteries though if you want to avoid nasty hissing.

An issue I have with your assessment: you used rechargeable batteries. The voltage on most rechargeable batteries is 1.2 volts rather than the 1.5 of alkaline batteries. If you’re using NiCd or NiMH batteries, the amp will be seriously underpowered because it will be trying to operate at 7.2V instead of 9V. Also, the above batteries have lower power density, and so can’t put out the same current as alkaline. That would seem to be the problem with your volume output. Other reviewers using a 9V power supply or alkaline batteries don’t report the same problems with volume you’re having.
@mysideoftheroom1576
@mysideoftheroom1576 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I'll try the power cord tonight or tomorrow and see if it makes an appreciable difference. However, I don't consider the lower volume of the amp to be a "problem" in an apartment. If I want to shake the building, I've got the Hartke.
@mysideoftheroom1576
@mysideoftheroom1576 2 жыл бұрын
Update: I used the power cord and a passive bass, and... no appreciable difference in the volume level vs with (rechargeable) batteries. Not that 10W should shake an arena anyway, but just checking.

Busking is the way I make part of my living. Took me 2 years to sort out my rig. This is it: AGA 20w vocal/gtr VOX 3w mini vocal/guitar Roland MC Bass RX All have 9v DC converters...rarely use them. The AGA uses 8 AA VOX and Roland use 6 AA each. Have 2 sets of rechargeables for each amp. Total of 40. 4-6 hours per set before recharging. Always have a fully charged set on deck. My 6+12 sring acoustic guitars and 2 pedals all use 9v rechargeables. 2 generic 20.00 dynamic mics. Not that much different from an SM58 or 57 to make a difference. Boss TU-2 tuner(also use as a kill switch to change guitars) Boss 7 band bass eq. I use the eq for mandolin. Works a bomb. 👍 Assorted 9m patch cords 2 6" jumpers, 2 6m Xlr/xlr, 2 5m xlr/1/4" cords. 2 Universal guitar stands and a mandolin hanger. 10m extension cord and a 6 slot gang box. Also, a Swirlygig. Got one for Christmas. 👌 We play classic blues, country and some rock. Probably 1000 NZD invested over 2 years. 4 different partners. I play guitars, bass and mandolin. One partner plays harp, flute, bass and guitar. One plays just harp. 2 students who both are learning guitar and bass. So, I'm out 3-4 days per week 3-4 hours per. The kids have improved dramatically in just a couple months. The investment has paid for itself 3-4 times over. The first time busking with my students we did 300.00 in 4 hours. They were chuffed and super motivated afterwards. Pretty awesome. lol Thanks for letting me bang on about all this. Cheers from New Zealand 🇳🇿 🎶🎤🥄🎸🎙🎵 The upshot is that I've never noticed any volume drop from using rechargeables. I keep a set of alkaline on hand just in case, but have never used them. Have used the amps with the converters, too. Again, no appreciable difference in volume or fidelity that I noticed. I've been singing/playing/engineering and teaching for 35 years, so I've got a pretty good ear. These little amps are made for being heard above traffic and warming up before gigs.
