Blind mall shopping adventure with Guide Dog Arabella! Target training, navigating, shopping! Part 1

This is part one of a three part series I am uploading from mine and Arabella‘s fun and exciting shopping adventure in our local mall. As someone who is 100% completely blind and does not even have light perception, adventures like this can be very daunting and challenging to say the least. However, I love challenges! I see my challenges as a game I am going to win! Instead of my blindness limiting me in living an independent life, I strive every day to push past those limitations to show myself and the world what I am capable of achieving. Through my skills, determination, confidence, and of course, through my beautiful guiding angel Arabella’s intelligence, we are able to overcome these challenges with a whole lot of faith and joy! PS; I am filming this adventure with my iPhone XR in landscape mode in my right hand. I am able to blindly film through visualizations, sound, and through touch. I understand that the camera lens on my iPhone in landscape mode is on the top left corner. As I am filming everything, I always make sure to aim the camera lens in the direction of what I am wanting to capture. Arabella was going straight for the glass wall on your last attempt. There was a lady in front of you and to your right but she was turning left so she walked right in your path. Arabella was quick on her paws and saved the day, what a good pupper!

It's crazy how when sighted people look at a space like where you are in at the end here, and may think it's not that large. But to a blind person trying to feel their way around, it's like you are literally in the abyss. Then add in the knowledge that there's a staircase near by, which adds the danger of falling, and I get why it's so scary. I hope you and Arabella are able to one day master that mall together, and figure out how to navigate it. It's probably so much less stressful with a dog knowing where they are going, rather than relying on your memory alone and a cane.

KT everything you just said is completely accurate! Yes, it is extremely scary when you know there is a staircase nearby. I have had some Close calls with almost falling downstairs due to me being disoriented. Arabella, and my former Guide Antonia have showed me tops of stairs before, or obstacles, and because I was disoriented or stressed, and wasn’t paying attention, I almost had a huge accident. I am about to upload the next video in the series which shows how I eventually located the top of the staircase and how I went down them, and back up LOL. Next week I am going back to the mall with a friend to do more training with Arabella. So more great videos of adventures to come :-)

Arabella was so used to doing this type of training that she was all bored with the new concept right after you said wall and she got the treat. I think Arabella is very smart, she finds her way, but its good to keep training. Arabella was confused and didnt know what to do when you told her to go inside the pacsun store, i think she was trying to lead to the door but lead you to a window

Watching you navigate through is amazing. When you got to the store and I saw the girl on her mobile phone at the desk rather than being on the floor annoyed me...she was being paid to work...not be on her phone. Then the lady at Pac Sun...that did show some redemption. I am an advocate of the seven simple words...and you don't have to be someone with a disability to use them...is there anything I can help you find...easy peasy...its a small thing called customer service.

I was just at Express yesterday for some new dress pants and OMG they have such cute stuff right now! There was this black silk dress that I was in love with but honestly don’t have an occasion to buy for 😂 Thought of you when I was in there! It’s such a cute store!

Oh my goodness, yes, they have such cute stuff all the time LOL. The red jumpsuit you see at the front counter is absolutely gorgeous on! I ended up keeping the extra small I had already purchased, I’m going to order it in black because I love it so much! I didn’t have a whole Lotta time to just go through the whole store, but I did find some really cute things. Perhaps this spring I will do a Express shop and try on video. I don’t really need any more clothes for this season, but can’t wait to see the new stuff for spring :-)

The dress sounds so cute! I know, there are so many things in the store I would love to purchase but do not have an occasion to wear them LOL. I love the extra 50% off clearance, it’s the best time to shop. Also, Christmas time they have 50% off the entire store which I always take advantage of LOL. Usually around every holiday they have 40% off entire store. I hardly ever purchase anything they’re full price, wait for sales and coupons.

It was a lot of fun, but it’s a lot of work LOL. I know my style, I know what colors I like even though I haven’t seen colors in over 12 years. As I touch and feel clothing, shoes, accessories etc., I see them in my mind. As long as someone tells me colors and patterns, I feel like I see everything like anyone else. Honestly, I have become better with styling and fashion sense losing my complete I sight. Because I see so well through my other senses I do not even feel blind most of the time. :-)

Thanks so much for making these Videos. I am planning on applying to a guide dog program in the near future and one of the thing I’m most looking forward to it being able to train my dog to target places and objects I need to find frequently, so watching how you do it with Arabella is really helpful and informative for me. Also, even though you haven’t trained Arabella on where those particular stairs were, couldn’t you have just gotten her to find them by asking her to find the stairs. I mean then when she have taken you to them as long as they were close enough for her to see?

A court of clockwork hallows having a guide dog will truly give you so much more independence and freedom. And to answer your question about Arabella finding the stairs, yes. Unfortunately, this area is very difficult to find the stairs. There are so many glass walls which is very difficult for a guide dog to understand. I am the one who was more nervous about telling her to find the stairs, hence why I didn’t say fine stairs. These stairs I was looking for would be leading me down to the bottom level. I am terrified of finding stairs risking possibly falling down them. Guide dogs are taught to stop and show me things in my way, sometimes Arabella stops for other things as well. My fear was she may stop to show me the top of stairs, but I may not have paid attention because I was disoriented and thinking she was stopping to show me a walkway or something. Does that make sense? If we were on the bottom level trying to locate the stairs that would’ve been a different story. Also, most of mine and Arabella‘s daily adventures never require finding stairs. This is not a command she has had to follow since I have had her for two years. She is used to finding curves and so many other things, but not stairs. Next week my friend and I are going to be coming back to this mall to do more training with her. I will definitely be working with her on the stairs, focusing on finding the top and the bottom, as well as targeting the escalators on the other side of the mall and elevators. The more I work with her on these things the more she will understand. Just like with us humans, repetition is key to memorizing things.

Joy Ross yes, I am very much looking forward to the increased independence and sense of freedom it Guide Dog will bring to my life. That does make sense, I haven’t thought of that, how if Arabella brought you to the stairs and stop there you might not realize that’s why she was stopping since you weren’t familiar with the area and there is so much going on. It also makes sense that just like for a us glass walls can be confusing to find where doors are and tell apart. I would imagine all the reflections bouncing off them are probably confusing to her also. And you’re right, repetition is definitely key to learning things so that’s good that you’re going with your friend to train her on finding with stairs and escalators. If she had needed to use the command in a while it makes sense that it might take her a bit to realize what you want her to find. Are you going to video the training session with Arabella and your friends?

It sounds like a microphone of sorts? Where do you position your IPhone, so everyone can see and so that you can move at the same time? I have watched your vieeo on how to film blind. I just recently discovered your channel about 2 months ago and I’m in love with all your videos and I’m so happy I found this channel by complete accident. But after watching all these videos I had a question. Like in this video for instance, while you wer trying to familiarize yourself with the mall and also teaching Arabella to memorize certain paths , there was quite a few people around. And while you wer a little confused at the big vacant area toward the end there was even more people. So like my question is would it be rude or intruding if someone was to come up to you and want to help you but like above and beyond , for instance take you to pac sun then show you where the stairs wer and all that. Would you be ok with that or would you want to explore and learn for yourself?

joy ross my guide dog is an English yellow lab he is about 30 inches tall and 47 inches long he is a little bit more bulky and bigger than most labs I guess

I went to guide dogs for the Blind to get both of my angel girls. When I received Antonia back in 2009, I had to go train on campus for one month with her. When I went to get Arabella two years ago, training was only two weeks. Both girls were 18 months old when I receive them :-)

Can you describe the ride vehicle you were in when you went on the avatar flight of passage, what it did, and if it went upside down? Just curious. I'm not a right person like I said, but I wonder if I would like it. Was there any smells besides grass? What did the cave and water smell like and, what kind of seats were you in? And what did the earpiece feel like and look like?

what condition caused you to be blind

My blindness is caused from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. It’s called uveitis. Inflammation that attacks joints can also go to the eyes and cause blindness. I was diagnosed with the disease at the age of three, I’ve had it in my eyes and in my joints pretty much all of my life. 12 years ago my eye disease caused my retina to detach which resulted in complete blindness.

What are you talking about? She is not sad at all, this is called focused. She takes her job very seriously. Every time I go to the front door to leave the house, this angel girl runs to the door to get her harness on. She loves working and is always ready to be mommies eyes. Don’t confuse focus for sadness. She loves mommy, and she wants to keep me safe.
