Are you pulling your air intake from outside? These will only work if you pull air intake from outside. Check out what I did in my AC Update video. This helped a lot with our cooling. You still need to be Insulated well and cover windows. When I first installed mine it was creating a vacuum and the compressor would stop cycling. Now the compressor will run constant until it reaches the set point. Nice van. New Subscriber.

No matter what you do, it probably won’t be the most efficient AC option. But try putting a sun-blocking shade on the window(s). Also, the direct sunlight on your inside thermometers from the window and the massive shift in temp/air each time you open the sliding door is throwing off your results. You also need to have a better seal for the output in the window. Remember that the air output by the AC is hotter than the surrounding air. Best to test it all while sitting inside and checking on a remote thermometer outside the van.

I think you are right about the sun heating up the thermometers inside. I also agree about adding window shades or curtains. I was thinking maybe an under bunk unit like they use on boats. What do you use?

Although your video is a little older now, a portable with a higher btu would help. I've read that you need at least a 8000 btu & above for vans. I ordered an 8500 btu Coolblus ac from Amazon for my '98 Econoline van. Great deal on the ac currently! I built a panel for my drivers window out of coroplast, covered that with reflectix for my vent hose. I also have a 24' motorhome & of course, the roof ac is going out! So until I take my van trips, I set it up in the motorhome. It's working pretty well, although the back of the RV stays warm. But then, the MH is bigger than the van. And my roof ac is 1500 btu. I'll have a video up soon. It's working really well. It will work better for my van due to the vans size compared to the MH. I also got a hose sleeve from Amazon. So much better than trying to make one from reflectix. 👍

Is your interior temp Sensor, in the sun from the window.. that could explain the high temp inside possibly false temp?

I wondered if that might be the case!!

Those portable air conditioners suck!.. I’ve tried them before… waste of time and money. A small actual “air conditioner” like through the wall or window would cool it off. Roof air conditioner would also work but cutting a huge hole in the ceiling doesn’t exactly put a warm fuzzy feeling on me. JMO. 😋

@@Swindy1794 I know… I have no interest in a hole in the roof. Maybe a boat style under cab u it or a mini split

The exhaust pipe in the window is very hot ....no bueno...a 5000 BTU window AC unit will cool your van nicely

That’s strange. I use one in my semi , powering it with a generator and it works fine.

A little late to the party but I should let you know that test was probably not super accurate because that particular portable Unit is absolutely garbage. I had one in my daughters room for all of about 4 hours before I took it back to Home Depot and picked up a bigger LG,if you read the reviews on those the lack of cooling ability is one of the number one complaints.

Wasted opportunity. Should have used a dual hose portable AC. Your single hose unit exhausts through the 1 hose, which causes negative pressure in your van, and hot outside air is forced to sneak in through every orifice and crevice. It is extremely inefficient. I don't know why they even sell single hose portable ACs anymore. I guess some dumb dumbs still are buying them... cough cough.
