What a great comparison! I have tried both and ended up with the RC-600 for it's size and versatility. I really hope they introduce true auto (natural) hamronies though! It is my most wanted feature on the RC-600. At the moment I am mounting a VE-500 on my pedalboard just for that function and would much rather have it fully integrated with the looper instead.
@JohnPaulMusicUK2 жыл бұрын
Me too Chris!! How do you find the VE-500? Have always been curious with it but I have been a TC-Helicon man for YEARS and have never played with a VE-500? If it’s just harmonies you need have you ever seen or used the TC-Helicon Harmony Singer 2? Much smaller and does one job very well. 👍🏻 I still use my Voicelive Play Acoustic cause of the compression, de-essing, the bodyres to my guitars, and also a lot of effects that I have dialled in over the years.
@chrisannablemagic2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Yes the Harmony singer 2 is a lot better fit. I ended up liking the VE-500 over the harmony singer 2 as I can change presets from Low or high or High & Low etc. with an external pedal (without needing to bend down and adjust the dials). It also has extra features available that I can use for recording etc. It has worked well for me so far. But I would of course replace it with any inbuilt Auto (natural) harmonies in the RC-600 - Boss could easily add it in a firmware update! You could just select the input source you would like to use as the Harmony reference 🙂

Excellent & really effective comparison - thanks. I have the Headrush. When it was first released it wasn't much better than an attractive doorstop (nearly useless and shocking it was released like that) but the V2 firmware delivers 99% of expectations. Still a couple of minor quirks when interfacing to other kit but as a do-it-all intuitive device, and ignoring price differential, I still feel it is the best of the bunch.

Excellent video. I got the RC600 a few weeks ago and finally started working out some material on it this week. It's been a very frustrating experience trying to get some basic loop workflows, such as recording onto a loop with a pickup beat (nearly impossible). It's also frozen on me several times, even with the latest firmware. Out of frustration, I found this video, as I'm researching other loopers. I still have more investigating to do on the RC-600, but I don't want to miss the return window. Anyway, thanks for a very informative video. You are changing lives! lol

Boss has finally had a rep reach out to me but they haven’t come up with any solutions other than erase everything and reinstall all the software.. really frustrating. I’m really hoping with time Boss fixes this thing but overall I’m really sick of companies using their customers as beta testers and releasing half finished products. It’s a culture that needs to change but only seems to get worse as we all just accept firmware updates.

Thanks dude! Much appreciated. I went with the RC600 as a "side-grade" to my RC300 due to 2nd hand proces on the RC300. The plan was for a 6 loop set up with two rc300's. Now it's hopefully a mega 9 loop set-up. I have heard from another KZbin video that you can midi control the rhythm section on the RC600 with a midi keyboard/ mpc pads. So my electric drum kit can be wired in without sacrificing an audio input. I am yet to try it out and see how it works, but the prospects seem quite interesting. Thanks again.

Nice vid JP. I’m stubbornly sticking with Looperboard despite ‘foot switch-gate”. I’ve never really liked boss products across the line and, although I am always tempted by ‘Boss’s latest looper’, I never end up jumping ship. I just wish you’d released this video with the “restore to factory setting and reinstall the update” advice a bit earlier. Just spent 2 days sweating, swearing and frantically trying to troubleshoot why my Looperboard was glitching loops. Turned out I’d updated straight over an update, without reverting. I ended up taking it back to factory settings and reinstalling a previous version, then doing both steps again but with the latest version and it seems the day has been saved. Sound advice my good man along with “back up your board”. Just in case anyone is wondering, if you hold the 2 bottom row buttons in the right hand corner (rec/overdub/play for tracks 3 & 4) and then turn on your Looperboard, it should say “reverting” and take to back it to factory settings, it will delete everything though, so back up your board to PC first.

Nice video but I think I want to share my experiences with one of the described pedals. Namely the RC-600. Just because John Paul mentiones the firmware problems and that he does not have them - lucky John Paul. By it´s specs it looked like it would be perfect for us (MarrowVoltage - 3 piece electro band with cello) But the damn thing refused to work as midi slave and as midi master. The behaviour was so odd that we ordered another brand new one just to learn - the fault is by design. We tried to sync the RC-600 from an Octatrack that is in my experience a reliable clock source (successfully paired it with drum machines, sequencers, synths in the past). But the RC-600 quit with an ugly / kryptic error message (System Error LC 2807 0110) and had to be power cycled. Not for long as this happened continuously. Then we thought, ok maybe the Octatrack is not precise enough let´s invest in an even thighter clock source - the ERM Multiclock. The most precise clock for quite some money. Result was the same - system error. We didn´t want this at first but was we wanted to make music and have an upcoming show we tried to use the RC-600 as a master clock. This turned out to be even worse. We had such an enormous amount of jitter that our grooves went nuts. Our Elektron machines did go up and down 2-5 bpm and anything was unusable. Despite the fact that it should be up to the user how to synchronize things (slave/master) a machine should do what is advertised. The RC-600 DID NOT !! I assume that this machine is made for guitar players and a solo show with only internal synchronisation. I can´t imagine anything else someone could do with this box. It´s fine if John Paul has no problems with the firmware but putting this to the market is ridiculous. Beta-testing is the right name for that. Don´t get me wrong. Nothing against sorting some flaws in firmware updates in an already working product. This is done by a lot of companies in very good way (thing Access/Kemper, Elektron just to name a few). The RC-600 should clearly be advertised as non-syncable. The midi interface is for remote control - maybe. Your mileage may vary but I am cured from using Boss loopers. So now we´re in for the Headrush an hope that this thing does not suck when it comes to midi sync.

@hedblom11 ай бұрын
Hi! Thanks for all these videos and tutorials. Think that both you and me play alot of same music style and are in to the same gear.. I have so much trouble to decide wich looper i should go for. Had an rc600 but i had so much trouble with it that i got the money back from the store. Got an headrush instead and had it for around 6 months. Like that it got everything, all possibilities with routing, fx and everything. BUT i used ableton for a white in between and fell in love with the possibilities to automate everything in advance. For example i could set up tempo, trig channel 1 to record with one kind of fx, record for 2 bars, then automaticly move over to record channel 2, 4 bars, switch fx and then overdub. Yes you understand. The problem with ableton was that i couldnt program any midi pedal to work like an analog looper in a decent way. Now for a question. Wich looper or software do you prefer? Ive downloaded loopy pro to my iPad now and Will try it out in a few days with my nektar pacer. Do you think that Will open up more Doors then the headrush? I cant spend alot of money on the gear now and the only thing im dreaming about is a decent guitar and vocalsound, minimise all pressing in livesoituation and the ability to change fx on the go. I dont want same setup on guitar like drumchannel. Thanks in advance.

Also.. the sound quality! 32 bit float is really the way to go now with loopers - there is so much more clarity, especially when your coming through a bigger speaker or PA. Once you have a few loops down the sound does get crunched and compressed with the 16 bit loopers and now we have 32 bit float, it’s mad that I can hear that. Have to say, the routing options on the headrush make it a winner for me. The ability to output each looper track to it's own individual input on my mixer, and thus easily add EQ and volume controls separately, as well as easily control each track in my in-ear monitor mix is a game changer. I just bought the looperboard but now I am wondering if I should have bought the boss. I have no experience in looping but i just don’t want to have to upgrade for a few years. What would you guys recommend? It’s still early in the game so I am open to returning and getting the rc I’m just not sure. Any help is appreciated.
@JohnPaulMusicUK Жыл бұрын
100% honesty, I prefer the Boss RC-600. But.. but.. but.. it’s harder to program up than the Headrush. Because of that screen, the headrush is really easy to navigate.. but the effects in the RC-600 I think are better for what I use it for, there are 6 loops, it’s 32-bit float and I can certainly hear the sound quality difference.. especially when looping a lot of overdubs. This is my choice.. but everyone is different. Ask Carl Wockner and he’ll tell you the Headrush.. and that’s a man who has just been signed too!. Step back and ask yourself what you want out of ANY looper and then look at the specs.

I have the Looperboard. I needed a looper and Boss hadn't released the 600 yet. I really like the Looperboard. it's got a very good interface and the sound quality is great. My one complaint is the vocal harmonizer activation process. To turn the harmonies on and off, you have to hit the "FX" button which then brings you to another layer of footswitch configurations and then you you have to hit the corresponding button that you've assigned as the on/off switch. The frustration = if you only use harmonies on the chorus, for example, this means you have to first activate the chorus track, then hit the fx button then hit the harmonies button. To get back to verse track, you have to reverse this. It really makes for some nasty tap dancing. If HeadRush allowed you to assign one of the buttons to turn the harmonizer on/off on the same button configuration layer as the tracks, it would make life way easier. The other thing is the actual quality of the harmonizer. I don't know if this would actually be any easier on the Boss or not.
@JohnPaulMusicUK2 жыл бұрын
The beauty of the boss is you can use assigns and configure either any of the buttons to by anything or configure an external button to be anything either, so for this, you could have a dedicated button like an FS-6 or 7 pedal to be the ‘hit’ on/off for the harmonies… if they gave us a harmony! 😂 Hence why I keep the TC-Helicon Voicelive Play Acoustic. However TC-Helicon made their units, they just seem to have one of the most natural harmony systems imo

@@JohnPaulMusicUK Do you think it would be better to use a Boss rc300 with Tc Helicon Voicelive Play Acoustic? I'm quite satiesfied with rc 300 except the basic effects possibilities. Your videos are great, thanks. I’m wondering if you have plans to do a Loopy vs RC 600 comparison. By the way does Lupe have a foot switch capability? Thank you so much
@JohnPaulMusicUK Жыл бұрын
Hey 👋 That’s an interesting comparison and a difficult one too cause it’s not just one flagship pedal against another but two different kinds of loopers against each other. Loopy Pro has so much expansion and AUV3 plugins and customisation to build EXACTLY what you want.. but.. it’s an app that you then need more equipment to make work (audio interface/pedals/controllers etc) and then have to wire all that up. The Floor based loopers like the Headrush and RC-600 are an ‘all-in-one’ system with that all in a plastic or metal box ready to go.. but they all have their limitations. And to answer your question, yes loopy HD and Loopy Pro can talk to foot pedals either with an adapter or Bluetooth. You have to program them up to do it but yes it can be done. 👍🏻

Times change, watching what Matt Bolton can do with his drum pad and not wasting hours looking for the "right" rhythm in the 500.

I made the Loopy Pro stuff and am still going to be making content for it but when Boss Asked me to make the RC-600 content and was given early access to one, all my efforts went into that. Many reasons but the biggest is a solid LoopStation for gigging that I can gig with with the least amount of fuss. Loopy Pro is awesome and you can make more than an RC-600 if you put your mind to it but you need more cables, audio interface, foot controller and a way for that all to work nicely. It’s great and I love it but it’s different and the simplicity of a single pedalboard looper (yes I have effects with the TC-Helicon Voicelive Play Acoustic) is best for how I loop at the moment. 👍🏻 Don’t worry thou - more loopy pro content coming.. just need more time.. not enough hours in the week! 😂

Awesome .. I swear I've been eyeing both for a while. I've had an rc300 for several years, but was just about to buy the headrush .. and then dropped the 600 .. and now I'm curious about the 505 after watching you mess around with it too, but it's probably not a direct comparison like these two .. the struggles. Great break down! I'm really leaning towards the headrush though because it has less customization. I went to Ableton for the customization, but now want something like the 300 designed to work within a predefined structure. Plus, feel like if ever there was one board that could work for an acoustic gig, guitar and vocals.. this would be it. Though, it needs a little more, but maybe in a 3.0 update. It seems so close to being an all in one .. would love to have it to play with endlessly and see where I could get. The only thing I really like better about the boss is the size. I've looked over the manual and searched youtube ... does the RC-600 have a built in tuner? I don't think so .. and if it doesn't, that auto-harmony feature probably isn't an option. I'd wager it lacks the hardware needed to determine an instruments key and then allow you to use it to harmonize .

As I write this, the Headrush is more than twice the price of the RC-600, £100 more than twice the price; with two fewer tracks. It’s almost unfair to compare the two. A better comparison currently would be between the Headrush and the Sheeran X looper; which also has four tracks but is 50% more expensive. IMO A touchscreen on the floor misses the point of a pedal looper - a remote touchscreen on a stand would be a real improvement to either machine. I’d rather not have the temptation of the touchscreen once the machine is set up for a particular song or function. No one wants to see you bending down to make anything other than essential adjustments.

Hey Kurt 👋 This is truly valid and I hear you. When this video was made the Sheeran Loopers hadn’t even been announced let alone released and believe me, when I get my hands on a Looper X I will be doing that video. But yeah no one wants to see a musician bending down and making adjustments.. however.. if you need to make changes, it would be so much easier on a touch screen (and faster) than a tiny menu screen. I do hear you though. Should be setup so you don’t have to touch it during the performance. Watch this space for when I can get a Sheeran looper X 👌

I went from pretty much hating the RC-600 to LOVING IT!!! My biggest issue in the past was a bug that came with a firmware update. Sometimes when I hit UNDO on the RC-600, it would change to a new, random bpm and it would train wreck the performance. This happened multiple times in front of an audience. I was ready to throw that thing out the f-ing window. Then, like a bolt of lightning from the heavens, a new firmware update dropped and fixed almost all my problems. The issues that remain are these: 01: No guitar tuner? WTF that seems like an oversight, I can't believe its not included. 02: Like most everyone else, I wish there was an auto vocal harmonizer 03: More ASSIGNS! I know 16 probably seems like plenty to a lot of people, but I use 9 of them just assigning faders to the individual track volumes + the rhythm volume.
@JohnPaulMusicUK2 жыл бұрын
I feel this. Yeah had that once but then was gone. Wishlist 1&2 are a no brainer. Want that too. Would be nice to cut off the guitar signal from the main out when you tune but not the vocal mic.. that would be nice so you could talk to the audience. Option 3 - now this is where I loose it. Not because of what you said but because of the clear and obvious wall Boss have put in place. There are secret cc# not allowed to be used and I BET they are to do with commands like volume and more for the internal controls. Why are these general commands not available as a system wide thing and then using Assigns would be for other things.. not to create mixers. They MUST be there otherwise how does the system on the RC-505mkii tell it what the faders are?! 🤷♂️ They need a SERIOUSLY updated editor (really impressed with how easy and simply the FS-1-WL editor is on the phone) and allow access for us all to have fader and pan controls without using up consumer assigns. Or just give us like 50 of them! 😆

Personally I don't like cars with touch-screens, i don't like ovens with touch-screens.. I don't like thermostats with touch-screens.. +I am SO glad that the RC600 does NOT have a big screen, or worse yet, a "touch screen." ("touchscreens" are so satanic +unpleasant to touch..) The RC600 screen is perfectly small in size to not take up valuable space. (the only instance where I would be in favor of a big screen would be If they were to build something that could be hooked up +used with the big screen of a computer (only when setting it up, or re-configuring it between gigs.. to get a birds eye view of the routing options etc.) that would be ok, (although unnecessary, since it can already be done without a big screen), but it might be nice as it could be easier to understand and use.. but why would u want a big screen on a looper that is used on the floor?? Who is going to want to move their mouth away from the mic, +bend over while wearing a guitar to try to start fondling touch screen? Forget it. I'd much rather program it ahead of time, +just play the RC600 with my feet. The only thing the RC600 really needs is a dimmer switch for those obnoxiously bright lights on the other parts of the pedal

so maybe a bigger, more intuative screen for referencing but not touch? thats fair comment and when I use the headrush im not touching the screen at a gig to be fair.. its just the size and design of the UI make it so much easier to dial things in, even at home.
@CSProduction12 Жыл бұрын
I own Both of them. MY personal experience so far is that as much as I like the boss for it's look,size and "potential" customization. it is simply to much of a pain in the ass to configure. I am a tech savy guy but get frustrated with it every-time I sit down to mess with it. For the life of me I don't know why boss wouldn't have at the very least a computer interface for configuration. It is simply to fucking complicated to navigate all those options with an LCD screen unless you are planning on spending days studying the manual and downloadable parameters manual. As for the Head Rush... plugged it in, updated it... started playing and having fun right out of the box! It is really night and day with how easy it is to configure and understand compared to the rc600. But, it is limited. There isn't but so much you can do with the four channels. It has less options but is way more intuitive for pumping out musical ideas and just having fun. The dilemma: Not interested in lugging around a 40lb computer to gigs. The headrush's screen isn't going to be doing me any favors when I am playing multiple instruments and entertaining a crowd and without the touchscreen it's honestly much more limited then past looper stations. I will be holding on to the RC600 and wait for boss/roland to get their head out of their asses, hire a programmer or two and create a rc600 interface. Then I will see if there are any buyers left for the headrush.

@@JohnPaulMusicUK Thank you! Do you know what the name or website name is for the editor? Isn't funny that a Single guy can do this but a massive company like Roland claims "They didn't create an editor to keep cost down"... I mean, how much can a couple of programmers possibly cost?!?

I'm SO GLAD that the RC600 does NOT have a touchscreen !! That would ruin it.

It's highly unlikely that deleting your loops before installing new firmware on your RC-600 affected the process in any way, even if the board worked from that point on. If I'm misunderstanding and you found a way to re-flash the unit that's a different story. I've had teething issues with it as well. Currently my loops start to distort as if they've been time-stretched when acting as a tempo slave despite the host, my DAW, sending a constant timecode. Also I can't get most effects to span more than one track. I am, however, stoked that the loop sync issue is fixed.
@JohnPaulMusicUK2 жыл бұрын
It’s just a factory reset that I mean to get rid of any anomalies. Oooh that’s weird regarding the distortion- are you midi clock syncing by any chance?
@kmjansen2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Ahh I have not tried a reset so thanks for that tip! Yes I’m MIDI clock syncing but have a MIDI monitor that shows no tempo change instructions are being sent. Problem goes away when I make the RC-600 the master. Thanks for the reply

Like making music on s huge pedalboard get looperboard like scrolling endlessly through submenus than rc600

It’s not perfect, I agree but I does have some good advantages. We are always looking for that ‘holy grail’ looper! 😂

@@JohnPaulMusicUK I personally have been looping for almost 20 years and all I wanna looper to do is loop. I don’t want all the effects and all the other crap that makes it expensive and big. I want the softshell boss buttons. I want multiple inputs for different instruments like six a small display screen to show where you are in the loop and six loops.
@ShoggyTechTv8 ай бұрын
I didn't buy either of them. I went for the Boss RC-505 MK2 instead. Modern loopers like the Boss RC-600 are becoming too complicated and less intuitive to use. They are crammed with so many features that require deep diving into menus and sub menus just to get simple tasks done. That's what the DAW's are there for. There are some physical attributes i enjoy on the RC-505 MK2 that are missing on one or both the RC-600 and the Looperboard, like individual faders per track, FX buttons per track and the Stop, Start and Rec buttons per track. I thought the RC-600 was going to be a more modern looking update of the RC-300 with a much bigger touch screen and still retain some physical controllers like the individual faders and foot switches, but i was disappointed in the new form factor of the RC-600.
@JohnPaulMusicUK8 ай бұрын
Oooh that’s interesting. Yeah it’s another choice and I’m very lucky to have an RC-505mkii and I do enjoy the tactical response of having built in faders as well as the effects dial to alter things. I’m curious, do you have any foot controllers for it like an FS7 or more?
@ShoggyTechTv8 ай бұрын
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Yes i have the FS6 Foot switch which is quite useful, except it doesn't have a physical on/off switch like the FS7. Always something missing isn't there?🤣

RC 600 so far, I've found very good. I'm disappointed about not being able to name each track. And a "Note pad" section for each memory would be very handy. Sound wise and mixer/track flexibility is very nice: being able to route the "input/tracks" to the sub outputs in different configurations is a great mixer type feature; these units should have at least 4 separate outputs (stereo) and at least 8 inputs (stereo) for multiple instruments and other mixers to connect to the RC 600 since the recording quality is so good. Essentially that would make the unit into the only piece of equipment you would need to take to a gig and connect straight to the PA.
@JohnPaulMusicUK Жыл бұрын
I like the idea of a note pad. Useful. And yeah more inputs and outputs. For me I want more more more of it all. Suppose I could get another one and tie them together! Wow.. scary! 😂

What do you mean 1.5 hours per memory? Memory?
@JohnPaulMusicUK Жыл бұрын
It has a record memory of 13 hours total and up to 1.5hrs per memory. On the RC-600 there are 99 memories. You could technically have a 90min audio file on one memory of you wanted?!?! Crazy amount of storage!

Why have they still not got this right?! You still have to spend all night bent over faffing about with settings! They need to put the software on a tablet so you can control it with both your feet and your hands! Tadaaaaaaaa! However it does look to me that the head rush is the easiest to use?
@JohnPaulMusicUK Жыл бұрын
There is a guy making independent software for the RC-600 which looks sick but is windows only at the mo. You are right but once you have things the way you want them, you can save it and shouldn’t have to bend down to control it. I Certainly don’t. 👍🏻

I don’t know why anyone with any intelligence would make a foot pedal that you have to bend over and use your fingers to make selections. How bout making the drums a separate unit that connects to the looper and can be put on a stand for ease of use to select you genre, tempo etc. I have an Alesis SR18 drum machine that I run into my RC1…. Yes RC1… and have my on off foot switch connected to that on the floor. No bending or reaching. I want more looping choices but I am not going to pay for a foot switch that requires hands. That makes no sense. Nor does updating the software on these things. Build it to do what it does. What’s the problem? I lose interest in the thought of purchasing these things when I read about how they stop working after a while. Made to break.
@JohnPaulMusicUK2 жыл бұрын
That’s fair and yea I would love a companion app on an iPad or a secondary unit you get with it that is hand based to make those selections. Hence why I’m looking into the RC-505mkii and then having a foot switch for that. Looking at the Boss FS-1-WL wireless programmable foot switch is a good shout. Not perfect but a good option for expansion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2bZcpWQich5fLM

Egyszerű a választás: a Headrush-t NEM lehet frissíteni(!!!) Alap verzióban küldik, az elérhető funkciók felével. Hiába keresed őket, nem reagálnak semmire!!! NEHOGY eszedbe jusson megvenni! Az rc 600-ban bizhatsz, kicsit nehezebb megtanulni.
