Gulzar Saab is the most beloved of all Indian poets and lyricists. His humour, sensitivity, and empathy tug at the heartstrings across generations. Yatindra Mishra's new book Gulzar Sa’ab takes us on a journey through his life and times. Based on meticulously recorded conversations, recorded over two decades, translated into English by Sathya Saran, Mishra's book is a tribute to the genius of Gulzar Sa’ab.
Gulzar Saab is one of India's leading poets; he has published several volumes of poetry and fiction (many of which are available in translation) and is also regarded as one of the country's finest writers for children. A greatly respected scriptwriter and film director, he has been one of the most popular lyricists in mainstream Hindi cinema, gaining international fame when he won an Oscar and a Grammy for the song 'Jai ho'. Gulzar received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002, the Padma Bhushan in 2004, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2014.
Yatindra Mishra is a celebrated Hindi poet, music and cinema scholar. He has four collections of Hindi poetry, several well received books on Indian Classical music & cinema, including Girija (Based on Girija Devi), Devpriya (Dialogue with Sonal Mansingh), Sur Ki Baradari (Life & Times of Ustad Bismillah Khan) and Akhtari (Life & Music of Begum Akhtar). He has edited the gazetteer of Faizabad titled Shahernama Faizabad and authored Ayodhya: Parampara, Sanskriti, Virasat. His book Lata:Sur-Gatha won a total of six awards in 2017 including the prestigious 64th National Film Award for Best Writing on Cinema (Swarna Kamal) and MAMI Mumbai Film Festival Award for Best Writing on Cinema. He has served as the Jury Chairman for the 69th National Film Awards. His latest book Gulzar: Hazaar Rahen Mud Ke Dekhi is based on the life and works of filmmaker Gulzar.
Sathya Saran spent 30 years in magazine journalism, with 17 years served as Editor - the initial 12 with Femina and the subsequent years with DNA. Saran has transitioned to being a full-time writer. Her repertoire comprises much-loved biographies of cinema and music legends such as Guru Dutt, SD Burman, Jagjit Singh, and Hariprasad Chaurasia. Additionally, she has penned biographies of S. Kumar of S.Kumars and Ritu Nanda.
Additionally, work in progress includes a translation of Yatindra Mishra’s Gulzar Saab, a critical biography of the poet, lyricist, and filmmaker. Saran also has a book of short stories titled The Dark Side. She curates the 'Spaces between Words' festival, a one-of-a-kind writer’s retreat launched in 2017. Saran has also written a series for TV, offering solutions for real-life marital issues, titled Kashmakash. She is currently the Consulting Editor at Penguin India.
