An amazing canvas that weaves together such diverse strands to produce a historical narrative that transcends the linear timeline and individual rulers which was the conventional study of history. This is a new genre of historian who have popularized well-researched and highly readable accounts of India's heritage. Equally important is that they are bringing to the public mind, India's legacy that goes beyond just the Gangetic plains of North India. While bringing to the fore the history of other regions, these accounts also highlight the thread of common culture that held together disparate political entities of the sub-continent in the past. Am certainly buying this book!

In the medieval times, was there a fluidic transition of power with the invasion of mughals. How did these invaders merge their practises with those of existing heirarchy, with respect to caste or social policies. Was there a distinct divide where kings ruled, priests prayed, tax collector collected dues and all the rest vassals built structures. Did the mughals unveil social discord or did they just view it as part of the kaleidoscope. Did they want to be accepted by existing society.examples etc.

He seems to mix issue of tax evasion with budget allocations. Land grants has nothing to do with confiscation, it’s about reallocation of taxes collected from a certain village to now be dedicated only to a certain cause such as a university or religious sect instead of coming to the king.
