JR Smith - Sharpshooter

JR Smith is an NBA champion. 2013’s Sixth Man of the Year is widely known as a conscienceless gunner, but this past season was by far his best. He started every game he played (77 in the regular season, 21 in the playoffs), and posted career highs in both attempts AND makes from three point land (204-510). His 204 made 3’s were good enough for 7th in the league, ahead of guys like JJ Redick, CJ McCollum, Kevin Durant, and Kyle Korver.
JR Swish, as he’s known to some, is 17th on the NBA all-time 3 point leaders with his 1,679 makes. You don’t get to that kind of number without really being able to shoot the ball, and JR has never been one to shy away from a shot, whether he’s open, or there’s a few defenders draped on him. As you’ll see from this video, JR doesn’t care how difficult the shot seems to be, because he has supreme confidence in his ability. In 2009, he hit 11 3 pointers (one shy of the NBA record) en route to a career best 45 points, so he knows exactly what he’s capable of. Swish is definitely a highlight maker, and a tough shot taker, so I wouldn’t necessarily have a player watch him to learn to play, but he’s so much fun to watch that I just had to make a video.
These aren’t all 3 pointers, because to have excluded some of his crazy stepbacks would’ve been a disappointment, but nearly all of these are from this past season. The singular exception is the end of the video. I genuinely didn’t know which shot to end it with, but I remembered a moment from last season that seemed fitting, so the final shot is from the 2014-15 season, but everything else was from JR’s championship run this year.

JR was the perfect archetype of a LeBron teammate. Great shooter, and never ever hesitated to shoot. LeBron could flip the ball to him, with 2 defenders on him, feet facing away from the ring, and he'll still take and probably make it.

Throw in Love getting his, Thompson as a solid defender/lob threat and you get the magic of that cavs starting 5. Plenty of talent but not to where it gets tricky like some "superteams", a decent bench but nothing spectacular, it was their chemistry and resolve that took them places

It's not like JR is a top 50 player in the league talent wise. But what makes him so valuable and at least a top 25 player offensively is his ability to shoot confidently and even if he misses, he forgets about it and keeps chuckin because he knows he can make it. He's practiced shooting so much that even when he misses he knows it'll go in if he keeps shooting. The ability to move on, or play like you don't have a memory is so valuable and not many players can do it and it's what holds some players back because they get nervous they'll be taken out if they keep missing or they lose confidence and hesitate or they lose confidence and think to be smart and pass and it takes the team out of the game because you become a non-factor. The reason teams always guarded JR so tightly or a player like Marcus Smart so tightly is that confidence. Even tho JR can shoot and Marcus can't as well as most you have to know where they are at all times because they have that big dick confidence that allows them to chuck no matter how bad the shot is. This is something Kuzma possesses but it is more like he takes super bad shots and doesn't bat an eye, which is different from missing but carrying on like you made the shot.
