I've been a deadhead for 30+ years and it never ceases to amaze me that The Grateful Dead is bigger now than they've ever been and the sheer number of GD inspired bands, call em cover or tribute bands whatever but you got the upper eshelon like JRAD and Dark Star Orchestra but in towns and cities all across America you will find Dead cover bands playing bars ...It's wonderful that so many peole get it that they made some of the best music of all time and Jerry Garcia was the most transcendental guitarist there is, in my mind it's not even close....

Feels like there’s three kinds of ‘em.... straight tribute/imitation (DSO), GD songbook bands doing it their way (JRAD), and bands that are clearly “inspired by” (ALO)... that’s what makes the field so rich.

Saw the GD for the first time in March of '73. Liked it so much that I saw them 6 more times that year. Been a fan since that first show at the old Spectrum. Saw them alot until around '80- then just a few times after that. And I've seen almost all of the bigger touring post- Dead bands and this is one of the best. Saw them at Penn's Peak in March and they are awesome. Going to the Met next month. As is said here- and I agree- they are the best example of the Dead's music right now and I'll see them every time that they come to a good venue near me. I'm 65 now and the venue matters. I always love the line-up at this Festival- but I've seen a half dozen shows there and - in my opinion- it just doesn't sound that good there. In fact I saw The Dead there in about '98. They were a pretty good band- but I just didn't like that venue. Anyway- I also agree that we are very lucky to have all the Jerry-influenced live music. Phil's bands have all been great ( especially his '99 bands) -and Further was a real treat for that 9 or 10 years. Love any band with Kimock or John K. So there's alot of music to see and hear. Thanks for posting this- it's excellent! Keep on dancin'......

Honestly my favorite band right now, and I don’t see any real competition for the forseeable future. I think JRAD is just about as on point as 72-77 dead or 94-99 phish was. I mean honestly, I have listened to every phish and dead concert available from the 70s and 90s. They have the exact same copasetic magic that a band needs to be able to do a thing like play how the dead did in the seventies or Phish did in the nineties, night after night, barely a bummer in the bunch if at all. To play like this when they’re down arguably the bands strongest driving force, I mean how can you not get what’s happening right in front of us with this band? They’re just so lock step in tone every fucking song, every fucking night. Like honestly if it came down to choosing between seeing them vs phish or dead or co, I’d definitely pick JRAD. The only area phish or dead co is currently better at is the lot scene. JRADs just not big enough to have a real lot scene, and I don’t think another band will ever have a lot scene like dead or phish for reasons that aren’t relevant here, but my point is the lot scene is the only reason I might pick phish or dead co. I mean phish still has some nights where it’s transcendental magic, but you can tell they pick and choose when to go down that route and Trey just isn’t as comfortable jamming as he use to be, and he’s not really a strong enough guitarist to do the style of tight mini-jamming he wants to do every 7 minute song rinse and repeat all show long. Dead and co are well, put it like this, on no night are they my cup of tea and I will say no more out of the lifetimes worth of goodwill the band members have otherwise earned. So I can either roll my dice with phish, or go to dead and co just for the lot, which many venues don’t even allow anymore, or I can go to a nice intimate 500-2000 capacity ballroom/theatre and be guaranteed to have a band absolutely melt my face with the utmost efficiency and with unimaginable precision. You know what sets apart JRAD from modern day phish and dead co but so comparable to the prime years of those bands? They all got the hunger. They got the fire burning in em that makes em play as good as they possibly could then play even better than that. You can see it in their eyes. They got the bug that’s for sure, the big hurdle is to just get somebody to be willing to check out yet ANOTHER dead cover band but then they’ll get it immediately, it’ll be one and done and they’ll be on the best bus in town.

Im a die hard jrad fan. This pandemic has been hard for everyone. Reading this makes me miss them so so much. Ur spot on. Its not to disrespect other bands and to each their own and all that but jrad is the best jam band going right now, theres no question. They are all hungry and ready to blow minds and u know what I think the difference is between the bands u mentioned? They are have so much fun doing it. The smiles and laughs and the one upping each other is priceless. They are the most talented musicians I've ever seen collectively and the experiences I've had are undeniable and unbelieveable. I've never been taken to a place like jrad has taken me and they are a tribute band?? Like for real?? Ha! They are a hard sell cause who wants another grateful dead tribute?? But my god those boys are the real deal. I cant wait to see them again. I definitely will be shedding tears cause its been very rough not being able to see them for so long. And honeslty this wasn't my favorite show, so seeing that people are stoked about it is awesome.

Disagree. Some of it is okay. And Johnny loves Jerry. I know it's not the same and I'm not trying to say it is. But he has a genuine love for the guy and some of it comes across really great.
