Timing A Ecotec (LAF to LEA swap)

Had a few ppl ask what the LAF to LEA swap took.
So heres a run down of all the things that needed to be changed over to make the swap work.

Throttle Body
Knock Sensor
Intake Cam
Intake Gear
Intake Cam Actuator
Exhaust Cam Actuator

Worked on the older ecotec engines,same way of setting up the timing marks.With that fuel system shown,never crack loose a line without depressuring it first.Been to a class on the GDI system instructed by John Thornton whom is a mobil mechanic in Illinois going to shops helping them out

Appreciate the view of the cam lobes position when it was in time which I do appreciate now I can get on with the rest of the shit got to be done before I can give it a try and and hope like hell that I did everything right like sweating a river f****** between now and then, thinking about it 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨if you're timing was pretty good the way It's looking now I can make sure mine are in the exact same position before I finish the old gal off 😊😊

I miss doing engine work...I was at a caddy dealership for ages and went through the northstar reseal or Teflon piston replace, now I look at diagnostic screens. always good to watch your vids.....

Hello. I have a 2012 Chevrolet Equonix 2.4L I changed the chain with the cams set to 10 o'clock. The machine is working, but it gives a P0017 code! The instructions say that the engine 2.4 cams should be set for 5 hours, I tried to set it to five but then the crank lock does not fit! Why did you set it to 10 hours and not 5?

You don't happen to recall where the cam lobes were when you got the mark for timing after stalling the cam? I moved to TDC but the cam lobes I should have paid attention to before taking of the phasers. Trying to make sure they are in the right spot before bolting on the phasers in my job! Thanks for the video!

Crankshaft bolt is a torque to yield as well, so needs to be replaced. Camshaft bolts for phaser as well like he stated.

How do I tell if ur cams are sitting right. With the vvt u put ur marks on crankshaft top dead center then mark on intake sprocket. Then when u put ur mark on exhaust sprocket it has to be turned to put on its marks

The 2010 cam is 1 year only and gm discontinued it 🤦‍♂️ hard to obtain but there's some Asian website to buy a new one. It's $200 btw.. so eff'd up!

Is there a way to adjust the timing without marks? I took the chain out and my stupidity allowed me to turn the the sprocket s individually, which turned the cams. Now I have no idea where I am at. Call me an idiot because I am. 2015 Chev malibu 2.5

So what about the cam cap swap... They are machined to each head and. Are not to interchangeable and which will have more wear and lead to cracking and engine failure.. Because of misalignment. I have been building engines for 30 yrs and only done this procedure when the head can get line bored at a machine shop.

JCR54 Hey man is it possible to call you and ask a few questions. I am pulling my hair out with this 2013 Equinox 2.4. Replaced the timing parts and now I have a code saying the timing between the crank and cams are out of phase. I lined up the marks on all the sprockets with the colored links and checked it 4 times before closing the enigne up. Runs well, but cannot get the engine light out. Question, are the cam actuators the same part numbers? If not is it possible I switched them? I am at witts end. Please help

ok so i know the engine in the 2011 equinox i had at my shop was not an aui motor but i installed a 2012 engine. it ran great but would stall when you tried to drive it. i am wondering if the intake cam shaft would have to be switched cause the code i am getting is p0089. that was the only thing i did not do when installing the engine in the 2011.

Not if it's a 2012 engine. 2010 was a fuckin nightmare, unique timing, 1 year only cam reluctor styles, 2011 is same story but intake cam is set at 7 rather than 5(2010)

I've never worked on that engine, is there a mark on the block that the crank has to match up to or do you just use the marked links on the chain?

Yes the mark is on the top of the gear. The crank keyway matches to it @ the 12 o'clock position that's TDC. The marks on the chain is a secondary timing mark to co witness it.

Just changed an engine, same as you. Did not change phasers. Runs good except at first acceleration. Is it because phasers?

You have to change the phasers and intake cam or else you have issues with hpfp and timing

IM DOING JUST OPPOSITE MY TIMING MARK WAS AT 5 OCLOCK I ORDERED NEW HEAD AND IT CAME WITH INTAKE CAM NEEDING 10 OCLOCK. ORDERED CAM PHASER FOR IT. EVERYTHING IS IN TIME NOW. DO I NEED TO CHANGE SOLENOIC AS WELL? I BOUGHT ONE BUT IT IS GREY, THOUGHT IT SHOULD BE BLACK IDK. GETTING P00C6 CODE

I r been told a Malibu engines won't work in an equinox!! Something about decoding the cams part number. # is between 2 and 3 cylinders on the shafts.

The exhaust cam is the same on both motors old phaser will work.

It's a 32mm I believe, 55 lbs if I recall, and once your all together you just press against the primary chain tensioner arm(just press against the chain) and it'll set.

You have to change the intake cam from the 2010 to the 2015 use the 2010 phaser with the cam when timing.

Yes may have to change out some brackets, covers and motor mounts but it's the same block and engine

Hey bro I got a buick 2.4L. 2012 buick verano. I pulled the head off to have it rebuilt to due bent valves. I rotated the crankshaft to clean the piston tops & forgot to rotate it backwards to the original place. Now I can't get it to run. It runs & shuts off. I replaced everything on the timing system. Upper & lower guides vvt sprockets. New pcm new key & new crank sensor. How do I fix the crankshaft placement for it to run. It runs for a few secs then shut off

Make sure the crankshaft is on the compression stroke! As you bring it to 12o clock, put a piece of toilet paper or a cigarette to watch smoke. Or have a buddy put their finger over the #1 to feel if air is pushing out. Not in.
