My dad met James Brown in a strange set of circumstances back in the early 80’s. I think it was ‘81 or ‘82 and he was on his touring North America. He had lost some clout and fame since the 70’s, wasn’t quite as big as he was with the music changing with the decade and all that. Plus drugs, alcohol & an overall destructive lifestyle had taken a tiny bit of the shine off him that made him a superstar. But he was still the man, and although he wasn’t touring in huge arenas anymore, he was still easily selling out 7-8,000+ seat auditoriums and bigger. My dad lives in Charlotte, NC and the Charlotte show was the second to last show of the tour. My pops knew acouple guys who worked at the venue he was playing at, they got him a backstage pass to come hang out with them. He showed up acouple hours early to see them and they told him that James was in his tour bus in the lot behind the building...he had refused to come out for rehearsal/sound check and refused to listen to anyone on his team. Apparently, he had a guy on his team whose sole job was to keep him supplied with cocaine, marijuana & liquor. He had two out of the three but unfortunately he was missing his cocaine (which was by far the most important). His dealer guy had been unable to find any cocaine when they were up in Richmond so he had gone over a day without any. He was losing it in there and he had acouple crew members literally go into the backstage area and ask anyone they could find who looked cool if they had any coke or knew anyone who did. One of my dads friends said he knows a guy who could deliver some to the venue before the show starts. The guy ran to tell James and when he came back he said “James wants 6 ounces but if it sucks or if this is a rip-off it’s your ass.” Awesome story

James Brown looked up to Elvis Presley Joe. Learn your fucking facts. When Elvis died, James Brown cried at the coffin and weepingly said, "I'm not number two anymore." And there's a video interview of James Brown talking about Elvis as well backstage where he says, "He kept me from being number one, I was number one in soul and he was number one in the world but it made me try harder and I love him for it." Elvis was the most powerful thing a stage has every witness. Have you ever seen his third Ed Sullivan performance? The dude literally just raises his eyebrow and moans and the girls in the audience almost passed out. Elvis was the first to perform giant tours, the first to have ambulances ready at this concerts, the first and only to ever have a concert protected by the national guard. Elvis outsold every entertainer ever by a large margin. The only people close to having the power Elvis had was The Beatles. That's why together Elvis and The Beatles outsold the next 8 artists combined in the top 10 rankings.
@Clyde177
@Clyde177 4 жыл бұрын
Well, Scumbag..... One of the reasons James didn't sell as many records as The Beatles or Elvis, they kept his music off of POP Radio. James Brown music wasn't only Called Soul, it was called Race music or N-word music. James Records sold very well to the Black Market or Black people.
