I live in a rental apartment with no charging available at home, nor at work. I've had a Tesla Model 3 since 2018. I pretty much exclusively charge at superchargers. I had no noticible degradation of my high voltage battery on my 2018 Model 3 and now with with my new 2024 Model 3, I charge to 100%. Still almost exclusively at supercharger. The only time I get other charging is when camping at electric sites. I plug into t30 trailer plug then or at hotels that have EV chargers. I'm in Canada.

@@DamiiDoesGaming I drove a Subaru Impreza before the TM3, driving 40km a day for work cost me upwards and around $50 a week. Driving the same distance in my TM3 cost me about $22 a week, insurance is about the same, and I have no maintenance or service cost like I did with my Impreza. I saved $75 per pay for service and maintenance costs for my Impreza and rarely had any left over for moding my Impreza. I save $65 per pay now, for shits and giggles mods to my TM3. I'm saving a little more now too because of 3 months of free supercharging with my new Tesla. FYI if you're interested in a new Tesla, I can refer you for $1300 off a TM3 or TMY and you'll get 3 months of free supercharging. Just over a month after I got financing, Tesla has 1.99% Financing offer. Boohoo me, but woohoo for new buyers.

I’ve had my model 3 since January of 2023 and live in a condominium complex, luckily I live next to a mall and have a supercharger there but whenever anyone asks if I love my Tesla or how it is to charge I always explain to them that the major benefit is if you charge at home, yes you can use the supercharger but it’s more convenient at home. I also explain how it depends if they do long distance traveling as opposed to someone that travels throughout the city. All these are very important factors that overall should be tied in if you decided to get one.

I work from home and just took delivery of my standard 2023 model 3. I’ve had it for a week and I charge it in my garage on the regular level 1 charging outlet. I thought this would be an issue but I’m getting a consistent 5 miles per hour just from my regular outlet. Much better than the 2-3 miles Tesla and others claim. Try it out, you may find your regular outlet works better than expected.

That is what I do. Use about 20% a day and just charge it at night from 80% to 100% everyday (I have the battery that is fine to charge to 100%). I would recommend for anyone doing this to get it checked by an electrician though. One of my outlets had smoke coming out of it because of a wire melting and the load on that circuit. Just cause of old materials. Had to call fire dept lol. Got it upgraded and all fine now though.

Have our 2024 Model 3 for two months now. We're in an apartment and there's a Wawa a couple miles away with superchargers, and a grocery store a couple miles away with a free L2 charger. We're eventually going to buy a mobile connector and just park next to a window and put the plug out and start charging that way. So yes, it can be done.

In my situation I’m on my own and saved enough to be able to own a condo instead of a house that would cost me 6x more and triple the mortgage. Many own condos instead because of this similar situation and for the most part it’s not as bad as people make it out to be.

The Ontario (Canada) government introduced an ultra-low overnight price plan a short while ago. The cost is 2.8 cents / kWh. The peak rate from 4 to 9 pm is a little more (28.6 cents / kWh) but the cost to charge an EV overnight is now really cheap.

I purposefully bought an older 2015 Tesla Model S for my first Tesla from a dealer, not Tesla so I could find one with free unlimited supercharging, I just so happen to find a P85D for 20k so great deal there... I only have 110 at home which was fine for my Volt, but not so great for my Tesla... I still plan to run 220 out to my car port, but I have a supercharger right near my work like about a mile or less away.. so a couple times a week I stop by there after work to fill back up to at least 60% sometimes when I'm super low when I get home I'll use the 110 to get about 30-50 miles overnight but my main charging source at this moment in time is supercharging.

I bought my model X when it came out in 2016. I had FUSC that’s transferable. 8 years of use, I early charged at home. I live in LA, and use public chargers for free or supercharging. I save around $500-$600 a month. Over the life of the car, I’ve saved “according to the tesla app”, $6,000 a year. Overall savings of $49k and I’m gonna transfer my supercharging to a model X plaid next month! Can’t wait!

Great video! I own a Model 3 SR in ATL and I tell people interested in EVs this advice all the time. Don’t get an EV unless you have the ability to charge at home. When I first got my Tesla I supercharged mostly for the first 2 months and It was Very inconvenient. Oddly enough, Tesla has added 2 more superchargers near me since I’ve purchased my M3. But when I got mine the closest charger was 15 mins away. So I had to travel 30 mins combined to charge and of course I’d lose range on my way back home. All I have to do now is plug in overnight and I have a “full tank” every morning, so clutch.

I wouldnt say you shouldnt get an EV if you cant charge at home. I've had my M3 LR for around 4 months now. In that time ive driven around 7000 km and paid for 318 $ of supercharging. In my old petrol car, it wouldve cost me around 1200 $ in gas (in my country) for that same distance, maybe more, given that most of my driving is in the city, where ICE cars are even worse than on longer trips. I've only charged for free when visiting my familiy who have solar panels on their roof. Since the free charging accounts for at max 15-20% of all my charging, the rest being superchargers, i still save an incredible ammount of money by driving my M3, compared to my old ICE car. Especially if you only have a relatively short commute to work every day, owning an EV without being able to charge at home is no problem. With a commute of in total (there and back) around 30km i have to charge at a supercharger once a week, mostly every two weeks, for around 30 minutes. In that time i get groceries or eat out, so im litteraly "wasting" a 10 minute drive detour to the supercharger once every two weeks after work. But obviously, if your commute is 100km each way, owning an EV doesnt make sense if you cant charge at home. On the other hand i read, that the average commute for americans is 40 miles a day, meaning it would make sense for most people to own an EV anyways.

I just went on a road trip this weekend in my new 2024 Chevy Equinox EX. I also own a 2020 Chevy Bolt. We all want Superchargers to spring up like gas stations that are on every street corner. While I agree that Supercharger pricing is comparable to ICE fill ups, if there is not a decrease in pricing, adoption could be further delayed. If the cost to fill up, outside ones home, is similar to ICE charging, why would would anyone go to a Supercharger, and hence, why would people build out charging stations. I do remember when Electrify America was around $.23 a kwh in my area. Then....poof...they almost tripled overnight. If anyone is wondering, Electrify America sprung up due to VW and their diesel gate. It was their penance for their trickery. I would think that Uncle Same had a deal with VW to keep it low for a certain period of time. I personally charge at home the majority of the time, but for stations to spring up and for folks to use them, they must be cheaper.

If you have an electric dryer you can plug your tesla into that. Just remember those are almost always 30 amp outlets and you should only charge at 80% of total amps. So when you plug in change the option to 24 amps. Also you can use a Y adapter to have both the dryer and tesla plugged in at the same time. Just don't dry your clothes and charge at the same time.

I just want to chime in on the cabin overheat protection. You are free to turn it off during the winter and on mild summer days. But please if its warm out and you are not parking your tesla in a shady spot. Keep the overheat protection on. The tablet in the middle does not like going over 120 degrees.

I don't think this is correct for more modern Teslas. In the manual it says that cabin overheat protection is solely to protect pets or kids that may be left in the car and that high temperatures have no effect on the components of the vehicle.

I don't have the ability to charge at home, but I am fortunate to work somewhere with abundant free chargers. I ran the numbers and realized that, with the recent cratering of used Model 3 prices, it will be slightly cheaper to finance one than to keep driving my _paid-for_ gas car. And that's without factoring in gas prices going back up or major repairs on my old car, both of which are inevitable. It wasn't a hard decision.

Supercharging is cheaper than home charging in the SF Bay Area. 😬. It’s $0.43 - $0.53 kWh…. and it’s slightly more when you account for the 10 - 20% power lost from wall to battery. The Tesla Mobile Connect is only 80% efficient at Level 1.

Perl (2023 sits in my driveway sipping frrom my level 2 charger to keep her charged to about 60%, which is plenty for a spontaneous 90 mile trip to visit my sister, and which I am hoping will be better long term for my battery than essentially cycling the battery a few times per month.

It's not the gauge of the wire you plug into the wall that matters, it's your houses wiring that matters. It doesn't matter if you get a 10 or 12 gauge wire if your house has 14-3

Yeah for me to go 51 kwh on a supercharger it's $22. At home it's $6. Just do it while you're sleeping. By the way, I'm renting and run a Y splitter behind the oven with an extension cord to the window and the tesla mobile charger on the outside. All under a carport. I can be done lol.

There is however a Connected Kerb AC charger on the main road of my complex within 30 seconds walking distance at the rate of £0.53p per kWh it appears the Tesla would charge 5 hours if I charged it on that. I have two superchargers that are more economical to charge at vs home charging (thanks to SDGE being expensive) that are less than 2 miles away (one to the West and the other to the East) so it was a no brainer to pay to get that 1337 performance from a Model Y with Acceleration Boost. I typically drive 6-10 miles a day so it hardly breaks the bank.

Some of your pricing stats are waaay off ( can tell you are an electric guy for a few years). The price of a big SUV/ Truck is like $120 to 180 to fill up. Price of gas for most Tesla owners in their states (Cali and NY) is like $5.50 per gallon. Electric, and more specifically home charging is the only way to go!

I have a Level 2 home charger from Tesla. My company provides a fast leve 3 charger I use predominantly. I pretty much drive for free, unless taking a long trip. I personally still wouldn’t own a EV if I couldn’t get home charging.

Probably getting a Tesla before getting the L2 charger. I have the mobile connector that will plug into a single outlet 120v circuit. There's also CCS DCFC nearby and a Supercharger about 10 miles away.

I have some info on that but PLEASE check with a licensed electrician just to be safe. We’re picking up our model Y tomorrow and we also live in an old house. I believe it was built in the 50’s We had our electrician come out to see what our options are for supercharging. He told us that since our basement is finished and the box is on the opposite side of the house to our driveway he’d have to install a line going from the basement up and around the house. This would be 1000’s ( this is for supercharging) he was honest with us and said we can just use the normal outlet to charge no need to upgrade for that. So the 120v in our garage is enough in his opinion. Obviously this is the slowest option but at no extra cost. Hope this helps 😊

I don't have a gas station or even a gallon of gas for any mower on hand in my garage. How is that any different? Also roads around me are 80-85 , so how does that speed affect battery life and range? No one ever mentions driving that speed.

Definitely takes a bit more battery to travel at that speed. Sorry I don’t know the true data but anecdotally I can attest to this 😂

If you need to get a 12 or 10 gauge extension cord and you don’t have a Home Depot or Lowe’s card get there sign up for the credit card and get a huge discount like 10 or 12 bucks for the extension cord and then when you pay it off, throw it away

Not sure if anyone could answer this, but I have a 3 prong dryer plug perfectly placed in my garage already and I am looking into buying a model y. There’s adapter to convert it to a 4 prong dryer plug so I can use the mobile connector. Do you think this would affect the efficiency or be a fire hazard?

A better late than never answer. YES, use the dryer plug with the EVSE [charger}. Grizzl-E chargers {EVSE is the correct term} company makes such devices, and there are several different types of 'dryer plugs' so be sure to get the one that fits. I had a 03 prong plug used for a welder in my garage which I used until I got a dedicated EVSE

I personally HATE Chargepoint. Every single time I have used them they are either broken and don’t charge or charge so slow and are not worth the price at all. It’s very unfortunate as they are more prominent in my city but conversely I LOVE EVGO, they are seamless and I’ve never once had any issue with them. Volta is even better as they are free! Granted not a fast charger but not pitifully slow either

If anyone thinks they're going to save a lot of money on gas by charging at a Supercharger, think again. I've had to charge every 3 days at about $20 per charge. Big difference compared to overnight home charging for $4. As he said, I wouldn't own an electric car if I couldn't charge at home. Also note a Tesla won't let you charge at home if the outlet isn't properly grounded.

Charging the vehicle is the biggest obstacle for the majority of car owners to own an EV. It is far more convenient to simply drive to the local filling station and in 5 minutes refill your car. No worries about range anxiety, locating a charger, having the correct electrical set up for using a charger, battery charge management, etc. Until recharging becomes as easy just pulling up to a gas pump and selecting which grade of gas to use, EV sales will continue to plummet. Tesla owners like yourself are very educated on the technology and because you find enjoyment in it, the obstacles are not a problem for you.

By the by, EV sales are NOT plummeting, as reported by Exxon et al. And yes, it requires some smarts to get the entire EV 'package' to function. But if a driver cannot think this thru, he should burn his license and take the bus

I believe you are talking about NIO’s battery swapping stations/networks. It only takes about 3-5 min to get the battery swapped, fully automatic, and you are then good to go on a full (92-93%) battery. I’ve been enjoying driving a NIO ES8 for about half a year when I visit China, and the battery swapping technology is just sooooo convenient. And most importantly, I don’t have to worry about my battery degradation or damage, and I can upgrade the standard 75kWh battery to a long range 100kWh for road trip, or even a 150kWh one anytime if needed. However, I doubt the US and Canada government will ever let NIO enter the NA market 😂

Charging a tesla is cheap! I pay less than $20 everytime i charge my tesla y more specifically to be exact $16 every time i charge to 80% my tesla. Also my car insurance is not expensive also. Im with NJM n im only paying $160/month of course that depends on what kind of a driver r u n the neighborhood u park ur tesla. Positive things owning an EV is zero oil change, filters and zero emission inspections. Thats less thousands of dollars maintenence costs for the life of ur ownership n gas expenses.
