sutton foster has her version and patti lupone had this, both performers are completely talented in their own right. it's a shame how people compare them.

I think both productions are amazing in the own right and are very comparable to each other. Cole Porters musicals are the epitome of vaudeville. I think Sutton took that role and made it very Vaudevillian. She was sexy in her own way and gave an amazing performance. The direction, choreography and orchestrations felt like the 1920's and felt like vaudeville. Patti's interpretation was grounded in her Julliard training. She portrayed truth and seeing her Reno was like seeing a real life sexy evangelist turned night club singer. The characters in the Beaumont version had vaudevillian aspects but were very truthful in their execution. In Uta Hagen's book she talks about representational acting and presentational acting. Patti's performance was Representational and Sutton's was Presentational. Two acting styles that create great characters. And if Into the Woods wasn't produced in 87' I am pretty sure Patti would have picked up a Tony for her performance.

Porter wrote for the legitimate musical theater not Vaudeville; nothing in Vaudeville was as sophisticated as his work. I think everything you're saying is true, except for your misuse of the term Vaudeville.

I like that this version is quite goofy, it reminds me of the relationship between the two being a playful, slightly crazy one. I love the vocals too, when listening to this I had imagined a performance like that. I get to do this song with a friend, and will definitely be taking inspiration from Patti, my favourite Broadway performer, even though she rarely performs in England. More performances like this please!

Talk about a lucky find! Does this VHS happen to have "It's De-Lovely" from this performance? If so, would you mind posting that scene as well please?

I love Patti LuPone in everything I have seen her in. As for comparing this to 2011's revival - Sutton Foster gives a monster performance. Very different from this, but she is a full on dancer, so the numbers often move to show off that aspect. Patti (or Ethel) were not dancers as well (at least not in this show). Just watch the Anything Goes number and you will see the difference. When the time to dance comes Patti often steps aside, whereas Sutton would take center stage. And while Patti is arguably a better pure singer, I enjoy that Sutton's singing allows all the lyrics to be heard clearly - great Broadway style voice.

It's not written for a dancer. If someone came out and did it as a trapeze artist it would be no less appropriate.

Sutton Foster is overrated. She does have the voice or talent of Patti LuPone. She's cold and it shows in everything she does. A stage diva with a following will never happen to her.
@rocketdawg1913 жыл бұрын
Fantastic...almost exactly like the soundtrack. Patti and Howard are fantastic and bring lots of energy to this performance. I find the new revival (2011) to be lacking in passion and energy. Sutton Foster butchers the role of Reno.
