Hidden power: With the fact you don't choose your DVs/IVs, it'd be a bit bad for a tierlist like your gen 1 one, but for an impossibles run I see 0 problem with it

Honestly, we probably should've been doing "designer" Pokemon from the start. If the question is "CAN" the pokemon do it, and we're asking about it's potential, seeing it at it's best sounds fair

@@1stCallipostleThat's when you watch Scott's Thoughts. In his solo runs he sets his pokemon's DVs or IVs to max or max minus whatever he needs for a good coverage Hidden Power type. Plus he does multiple runs to optimize the results as much as possible.

@VCV95 6 ай бұрын
RBY/GSC Challenges does the opposite. He sets ivs/dvs to zero in all runs. His challenges are to prove any version of the pokemon is feasible. Scott's runs prove whether perfect pokemon can complete his run, along with Gym Leader Matt, JRose just jumps in feet first and tries his damnedest. All different, all good versions of runs imo. All very different personalities too.

In that sense, using Zigzagoons to farm Rare Candies would also be a bad idea for a tierlist, since they make leveling up kinda trivial, and therefore difficult to judge when a Pokemon has been struggling in specific parts of the game.

So the odds of Nosepass either getting flinched or missing rock tomb is 38.75% on a single turn. For that to happen for 6 turns in a row (7, but we're not counting the potion) would be a 0.34% chance. Its not really important to find the odds of exactly miss-miss-flinch-miss-miss-flinch or w/e because we don't really care about any specific order, just that Nosepass was unable to move for 6 turns.

Maybe I'm missing something, but aren't the odds 44% (1 - (0.8*0.7))? And the other thing to consider is that while yes, the odds of 6 in a row is that low, JRose used Bite 14 times (I think). 6 in a row can occur 9 ways with 14 attempts, so the odds are either 3.04% (using your 38.75% figure) or 6.5% (with my 44% figure). Either way, lucky dude

Hidden Power can be a lifesaver in solo runs depending on the Pokémon and the type, but pretty much only in cases of awful matchups in specific battles. When I was putting together my personal project of solo runs in Platinum, I put Hidden Power in the category of "crutch" -- moves or items that tend to help weaker runs more than stronger runs -- which led me to avoid using it when possible and adjust the run's ranking downward if I couldn't get past certain battles at a reasonable level without it.
@milohdd

Yeah I think Jrose should honestly use that system too, having it be disfavoured but not banned means that pokemon who need it to get past their weaknesses still get to use it, but not without consequences

25:12 Personally, I don't mind the usage of Hidden Power. On one hand, it can definitely help Pokemon that struggle with coverage or against certain match-ups, but on the other, it's still a part of the arsenal that can be considered. Truth be told, I had actually thought it was Dragon before you mentioned it was Ice, as I thought that Steel didn't resist Dragon-type moves in Gen 3. Whatever the case, I think it's hardly comparable to Evasion moves and even at its worst, it could be mildly useful in certain battles. Besides, part of the fun is finding out what the typing of your Hidden Power even is, assuming you don't set it ahead of time in PKHex or something prior to a run.

Explanation of what happened on Wattson: Gen 3 has some weird quirks about its AI, like all the gens. -Since shockwave can paralyze, the AI considers it a "status effect move" and because you were already paralyzed, it will only go for shockwave if it sees a KO on its damage roll. The damage roll is like any normal damage roll, it rolls for crit and everything normally, and it appears that it saw a kill with shockwave because its simulated damage roll was a crit. But it didn't get a crit on the actual damage roll.- Edit: It can't be this explanation because Shockwave can't para. My only possible explanation is it saw "hits self in confusion" with Shockwave on that roll, that's the only *possible* explanation I can think of. Now that may lead to some of you wondering "But what about Norman and Slaking randomly going for Yawn?" And yeah...yeah, that's a thing. But you see, sleep is a bit different from Paralyze, Poison, and Burn, it can end on any given turn, so it's treated slightly differently. It is thrown into the rotation of possible moves. Especially if it's acting second in a speed match up.

That gives confusion significantly more consistency as an ability as it's essentially functioning as gen 1 disable in a way.

I love seeing the Zubat series continue, especially today on Halloween! Regarding Hidden Power, I think it’s perfectly fine for the impossible challenges series because they are primarily one off videos and much more difficult than the usual R/B solos, so having that potentially useful tool seems fine to me. However, if you started doing a tier list in later generations, then I’d err on the side of banning Hidden Power so that no Pokémon has an unfair advantage because they happened to get lucky (or you could create perfect IVs with whatever Hidden Power you need).

It's crazy how to this day the Zubat line has a unique typing. Poison/Flying is such an incredible defensive type combination when used as part of a team, but solo it definitely runs into types it can't handle that well pretty often. Zubat for sure gets some pretty good moves but not a lot of them. Giga Drain, for example, is a really good coverage move and it helps it serve a defensive purpose on a team, or last longer in solo runs. Honestly Zubat and Golbat's biggest issue is their stats, and the fact that they didn't get many good STAB moves until Gen 4. Crobat is genuinely *really* good in almost every game it's available.

3:15 The odds of that happening I think are 0.00345744%, or 1 in 289 attempts. Very unofficial math, but the sequence was: Flinchless (70% chance) Rock Tomb miss (20% chance) > Flinchless Rock Tomb miss > Flinch (30% chance) > Flinchless Rock Tomb miss > Flinchless Rock Tomb miss > Flinch So I think the math is 0.7 * 0.2 * 0.7 * 0.2 * 0.3 * 0.7 * 0.2 * 0.7 * 0.2 * 0.3 which gives 0.0000345744. We're treating 1 as 100% chance, so to extract a percentage from that result you move the period two digits to the right because of the 2 extra zeroes. Also, since it's only multiplications (which can be shuffled and will give you the same result), I think that's the chance of getting that combination of Moves, but in any order, which means getting that specific order of flinches and misses is probably less likely (since it's 4 actions of one type and 2 actions of another type, you can think of the number of possible orders for the actions), but the order doesn't exactly matter to us (we're just like woo 4 misses and 2 flinches!), and once you start counting order of actions in long playthroughs where a lot of actions are happening every second (or couple of seconds for turn based games), the chances get tiny quick (and that's why these games are so replayable).

At least, thanks to silly AI in Gen I core games, it had a chance against some strong trainers, like Lance, and some Pokémon don't even have Rock type moves, like Rhyhorn and Rhydon.

I think something that might make your play throughs a little easier is taking advantage of the damage rounding thresholds. Apparently the level your Pokémon are effect damage more than we think, levels ending in 0, 3, 5, and 8 tend to deal significantly more damage than the other levels due to how the math works. It might cut down on training

Hey Jrose, loved the video. Just wanted to say i think it would be cool if you talked about the run at the end a little bit more and give your thoughts (although you talk about it in your video anyways). feels like such a achievment to end the run and i just would appreciate a little time to talk about it and give some context

I prefer your approach to hidden power over someone like Scott’s Thoughts (also a great solo runner, check him out). In his videos he controls the stats, hidden power and nature of his Pokémon. This is great for accurate comparisons and I love the way he displays so much information on screen but sometimes it’s a bit too scientific! I prefer the more relaxed Jrose approach to Mon stats, natures, hidden power etc as it feels more replicable at home. No hate to Scott’s thoughts- would defo recommend his videos; brilliant sense of humour and puts huge effort into making great content 👍🏻

Happy Halloween at the time I type this! What a way to celebrate with another Zubat run...though interesting that Ruby/Sapphire actually works out WORSE for Zubat than Emerald. And yeah, usually I think Emerald is the harder game between it and R/S. Surprised to see that thanks to Steven, that isn't the case for Zubat.
