Having heard and played this Sinfonia, I believe perhaps Jonathan expresses the music better than those I have heard including myself. The tempo, articulation, and mood are ethereal. God "lives" in this piece, and I believe he and Jonathan are collaborating to move all of us. It is amazing how many comments are here, and how we are all struck by the beauty presented. Music is soul-soothing, healing, mesmerizing, I am amazed at JS Bach's collaboration with God as Herr Bach composed something so "out of this world." Thank you, Jonathan for an unmatched presentation.

Cantata BWV 156 Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe Cantata 156 was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach’s favorite librettists. Cantata 156 serves as the “prayer of one near death for release from the sickbed of punishment for sin, then for God’s aid with the sickness of the soul.” Source: The Bach Choir of Bethlehem

This piece will forever hold a special place in my heart. In 9th grade I played it on trombone as my first solo. I've heard snippets of it through the years, even pulled out the sheet music and played it on the piano several times when feeling nostalgic, but up until now, my solo has been the only time I've heard in it's entirety. I never heard a recording before I chose the piece. Not sure why I never looked for a recording after all these years because it's one of his most beautiful pieces IMO. Thank you for posting and sending me on a trip back on memory lane!

Bach’s Arioso was arranged in many different forms by the composer. First written as a Violin or Oboe Concerto in G minor, now lost, it was then transposed and re-used as the Sinfonia to the Cantata BWV 156 inF major, first performed in 1729. A much embellished version was then used as the middle movement of his Harpsichord Concerto in F minor BWV 1056, published in 1738. Source: Music Room

A shocking confession - music of the baroque does not appeal to me in general, and while I clearly recognise Bach's absolute genius, at the same time his music usually holds little appeal (although I play some of it). But anyone who cannot be moved by the extreme beauty of this, and the superb musicianship of the playing, must lack a soul. Jonathan and Tom - thank you! A wonderful, beautifully recorded instrument to top things off! PS. Thank you also for giving the specs of this excellent organ - an example of fine modern organ-building and voicing.

dalcassian. There are some who consider you a peasant if you don't enjoy Bach or Mozart but this is musical snobbery. You can recognise their genius but have tastes that are more for different eras. I'm a pianist and organist and enjoy playing Bach (within the limits of my skill), but to listen, there's not much I enjoy. This is certainly one of the exceptions, its beauty transcends its era and speaks for all times.

I agree, Bach was a musical genius, but I would not want a steady diet of only that either. I think Bach would be the first person to say that music did not start, nor indeed end with him. I also think he would appreciate the talent , and astonishingly beautiful instruments of today, if he had a chance to hear this.

It's a transcription of a vocal aria. Before you argue against transcribing Bach, the Schübler chorales are all transcriptions where Bach transcribed his own works as organ music.
