Amtrak

Climb aboard the 2016 edition of Amtrak's Autumn Express. For the first time, this train departed from New York's Pennsylvania Station. Because of this, an ACS-64 electric was part of the consist. The train operated via Norfolk Southern from Newark to Harrisburg via the Lehigh and Reading lines following the route of trains such as the Black Diamond and the Queen of the Valley before turning on the Rockville Bridge and returning via former Pennsylvania Railroad main line, the New York - Pittsburgh Subway and the Northeast Corridor, all Amtrak territory. Besides the views from the train, there are several scenes from trackside as well.

Berks and Lehigh Counties currently have no passenger rail service (except for some tourist railroads like Reading and Northern, WK&S, Allentown and Auburn, and Colebrookdale). Amtrak though wants to change that with new routes from Allentown to NY (part of this excursion route minus the freight only NS track from Allentown to Harrisburg) and Reading to Philly over the NS ex-Reading and Conrail line. But such train services are at least 10-15 years away at minimum.

Well this is a first for Amtrak: running on the CRRNJ's Main Line, currently in use by NJ Transit"s Raritan Valley Line for passenger service to Raritan/High Bridge and CSX/Norfolk Southern for freight train service west of the Roselle Park Station.

I missed riding this excursion. Now with Amtrak banning special trains looks like the Autumn Express is ending and I will never get to ride the entire freight only route from Aldene, NJ to Harrisburg, PA. I did ride behind 765 on the section between Bethlehem and Allentown Aug 22, 2015. But I never rode the sections from NJ to Bethlehem or Allentown to Harrisburg. And new train service to my area, Allentown, seems very unlikely.

I waS just now on Amtrsak's website and I SAW NOTHING about this Autumn Express rail line for either 2016 or for 2017! Now it's2020. Have they decided to discontinue this train route or something? Thanx.

Amtrak is no longer doing special trains or charters due to former CEO Dick Anderson flipping out when a charter train hit a garbage truck that had run the gates. 2017 was the last year of the Autumn Express.

I wonder if there's a word for the kind of vegetation which lives next to RR tracks? Some of it is woodsy but a lot of it is pretty gnarly looking. It's either scrub brushes and ferns or ivy growing all over everything with skinny little trees. Maybe it can stand the creosote that comes from the timber and telephone poles.

Vernice Thompson if you don’t like my videos, you don’t have to watch them. I don’t always know where I am or what waterways I’m crossing over or whatnot. And I don’t have the equipment for narration

I watch them for the scenery, but I do like to be able to follow the route the train takes on a map. Other KZbinrs provide lots of information so we viewers can keep track of where you are.
