In Yemen, distance and cost are the main reasons that prevent mothers from obtaining much-needed, lifesaving health care and can cause maternal mortalities from obstetric complications. Our USAID Strengthening Healthcare Access project initiated a referral service, covering the transportation and treatment costs of emergency and complicated maternal, newborn and children under 5 identified by the project-trained community midwives to advanced health care facilities, ensuring mothers like Rabab, featured in this video, can receive life-saving health care.
The USAID Strengthening Healthcare Access project (2023-2028) led by JSI, supports Yemen’s health sector with the goal of increasing equitable access to evidence-based maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition; family planning; and reproductive health services. The project focuses on creating demand to increase uptake of health services, reinforcing supply of quality health services and commodities to improve availability and increase access, and supporting an enabling environment for public health.
