im on the other side of the sound in central CT and did great on bucktails at night about 3 weeks ago but that quickly died down and now i'm lucky to get a single striper each night. There's been bait everywhere (shad and some smaller fish), but there doesn't seem to be any bass on them.

This recent crazy weather pattern has slowed things down here in southwestern CT. The blues haven't been around like they were 3 weeks ago. The stripers are still small. The warming trend we had and continuation of sunny, dry days has caused the local NDBC buoy to jump back up to water temperatures ranging from 65-67. Hardly any bird activity and blitzing along the open shoreline in my area. Hardly any hits or followers while blind casting in the harbors and backwaters.
@samuelstonebraker3737Ай бұрын
Other than the blackfish, everything in the eastern sound is a little off this fall. Glad you are finding some schools of bass blitzing

Try soft plastic sand eel imitations over diamond jigs and spoons, they work much better.

Especially when they're on Bay Anchovies! But looks like he did alright anyway! Bay anchovies were almost a no-show this year in Rhode Island, at least where I normally would run into them.
@bradsaunders5367Ай бұрын
As John was saying at about the 6:00 minute mark, normal rocky spots with whitewater that have produced huge numbers of fish in the past 10 years, were almost devoid of Life here in Rhode Island this entire 24' season. Weird that the same thing is happening on Long I. as well.
@JessePinkoskiАй бұрын
Totally agree! I fish in RI too and had to put in a ton of extra time and spot hop to have a decent year. Hopefully next year is better.
@JohnSkinnerFishingАй бұрын
Wow! Thanks for that insight! I'm driving 40 miles now to fish ocean sand beaches because the North Fork has been so poor. My summer plugging was terrible.
@JessePinkoskiАй бұрын
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Wow, I'm lucky in the fact I have a lot of spots very close to each other so it's pretty efficient, but the only place I found consistent summer stripers was around the local bridges here. They seemed pretty aggressive there actually after dark.
@bradsaunders5367Ай бұрын
@JohnSkinnerFishing It's been such a weird season. Much, much better fall in Narragansett Bay in back bays and outflows, but May-Sept shore striped bass/bluefish situation was dreadful. We had like 5 straight years of epic surf fishing(although I'm strictly fly) and then this 24' dud!
@bradsaunders5367Ай бұрын
@@JessePinkoski I caught 10X's more Bonito this year from shore than bluefish! On flies only! It's been such a strange year.

Was the 1 1/2 bucktail to help punch through the wind or do you ordinarily fish that heavy in ten feet of water out there? Appreciate all your tips and advice. Thanks.

John, when you say "when it's visible" (5:56) do you mean fish are actually feeding on the surface? Boils and all that?

How far are you able to cast that diamond slab lure? I’m casting my 2.5oz pencil around 150 yards on a good cast.

Farther than anything else, but don't have numbers. I know for sure though that I can't throw a pencil 450 feet like you can.

How do you know how fast to retrieve based on co editions so that bucktail is right off bottom but not too high? And how do you know when it’s not retrieve speed but you need to go lighter or heavier?

The direction of the waves show it's onshore, which is favorable to push fish in.

i'm assuming you have lots of nj fishermen among your followers. i have fished nj for 60 years and i have never seen such a general lack of bait and gamefish. it is still early and maybe they're coming this season, but the decline in bait and gamefish here has been steady and worsening. ten years ago, there were massive schools of bait and fish visible every day for weeks, clouds of birds covering acres and even miles. now there are almost none. i check miles of beach daily and almost never see a frenzy of working birds which was so commonplace throughout most of my life. i find it sad and alarming. i love your videos and wish i could live and fish in long island.
