One thing worth mentioning is that, when you completed the game 100% and connected your PSP to your PS2, you could get an exclusive car in Jak X, which is pretty neat.

You didn't need to complete the game 100%, I think I unlocked the Daxtermobile without even having a Daxter save on my PSP. Now I do believe the further along in the game you are the more of the Daxter cast you unlock as playable racers in Jak X tho. But again to unlock everyone you did not need 100%, just had to have gotten to the end of the story. You don't need all 1000 Orbs, or whatever the amount is, that saying 100% implies you need.

So on the infamous “uncle” inconsistency I always kind of figured that since Jak went into the past as a little kid who didn’t have a biological family that the people of the village that he grew up around became a form of surrogate family for him in the way of close family friends commonly being referred to as uncle or aunt so and so and that the uncle character is just someone whose known Jak since he was little

This game was the first experience I ever had with Jak and Daxter. When I bought a PSP I really wanted the Star Wars one that came with the Battlefront game but they were all sold out everywhere and being too impatient to wait, I got the one that came with Daxter instead. I wasn't a huge fan of the game but I still had some fun with it before I was able to get some more PSP games.

I'm assuming you don't own a PS4? You can just buy it there if you do, although they are the worst versions of the games (edit: except for the Vita versions) they are the most convenient at the moment. The best in my opinion is the port to PS3 (Jak HD Collection), because it's in wide-screen and HD, and I personally have not seen any significant differences between them and the PS2 originals.

@@dapperfan44 the worst versions of the Jak trilogy are hands down the PS Vita port. They run at less than 20fps, consistently dropping well into the single digits, and they look awful. I'm amazed at how Sony was ok with that port coming out the way it did. I had to uninstall it

@@billygilmusic5072 Oh yeah, I take back what I said. I forgot those exist and I own them. That's definitely a top reason Vita failed. It's supposed to be cool to get to play the PS2 greats on the go like Jak, Ratchet, God of War and Sly. Yet Ratchet had problems with the music and for some reason they couldn't be bothered to add an option to use the L2 and R2 buttons for L and R-its very uncomfortable to use the back TouchPad for strafing and locking on. And the problems like you said with Jak. It makes no sense.

PS4 versions are serviceable after the patches they got years ago. Stop repeating outdated statements that no longer hold weight. And for some reason people rarely bring up the notable fact that the games run even better on PS5. The only real bad versions of the games are the semi-unplayable Vita versions, which got not a single patch. PS3 version is a bit overrated considering it doesn't offer true full screen, is the only version with the infamous punch glitch, many different graphical bugs, butched audio in several areas, and some other stuff. I appreciate how clean it looks and runs, but I'd have to suggest PS5 BC for how far more faithful it is to the original.

Its wild to think that games looked so good back then and still look good now especially when it's on a handheld. It's just crazy that we basically leap to having extremely good graphical games on stuff like the ds and psp and now it's to the point where we have handheld like the switch that is both a home console and a portable console.

I like to think that Kor had already established himself as a member of the underground before planning on interacting with Jak after his prison break. Fittingly, his disguise as an old man with pre-established resources and connections in the underground would win Jak’s trust easily. This would also explain how he came up with the idea so quickly, every factor was well in place from his prior exploits, it just became a matter of being at the right place at the right time.

I found it interesting seeing Errol and Veger speak to each other, not only are they the main villains of Jak 3 but I always saw them as polar opposites. Veger wanted the Precursors power to rid the world of darkness while Errol wanted the Dark Makers(Precursors corrupted by Dark Eco) to rid the world of light. Errol in a way became Gaol, Maia and Kor from Jak and Daxter 1+2. I think that they are good bad guys.

Daxter was my first exposure to the Jak series of games. And boy, did it make it me a fan. Something about it made it one of my favourite games on the PSP. Perhaps something to do with the unique bug extermination premise and the unique abilities Daxter had access to. Looking back on it with more understanding of the Jak series, having recently completed the trilogy of the original games, I love how the game uses this opportunity to use Daxter’s size to see the inner workings of Haven City, and a side to the Metal Head infestation we never truely got to see, with entire hives in the city, as well as the manipulation with Kaden to shut down all the exterminators. I’m also a big fan of the gameplay, the combat feeling like a diet version of Jak 2 in a way, as well as the unique movement options and level gimmicks adding to the game. While not a huge fan of the QTE mini-games, I can understand wanting to give a small break to the main loop, as well as giving some players a fun optional challenge in the Dreams (just wish so many QTEs weren’t mandatory for progression). There’s also rewarding exploration, with the Precursor Orbs, Metal Head Gems, various hidden items and the Bug Fight trophies (I don’t remember its actual name, but it was kind of a nice idea). Goes to show that even a watered down extension to the series can still retain the important aspects of the gameplay and charm of the originals.

This video is pretty much my thoughts on the game. Definitely high quality and polished, offering a fun experience, but ultimately nothing super memorable, with little reason to seek it out unless you really want to play a good platformer, or want to see more from Jak's world. When looking at the overall Jak series, there's very little this game does that makes it stand out in comparison to the 4 PS2 entries, so there's very little draw for me to replay it. The gameplay is consistently entertaining, if a little shallow, but nothing groundbreaking or deeply interesting, and there's a couple small tidbits of story and lore to chew on, but it felt overall pointless, with some weirdly sloppy writing. The fact that the game doesn't *actually* take place in the 2 years between arriving in Haven and breaking out of prison was a really stupid decision. I feel like the potential to have a slightly in depth look at Daxter, and his friendship with Jak could have been explored. How did Daxter survive 2 years alone? Did he initially try saving Jak, or was he just fighting to survive on his own? Did he ever give up on trying to save him? Might be a little out of scope for a handheld side game about the loud mouth side kick, but they could have at least alluded to it a little. Instead, the majority of the story is spent doing chores with characters that leave little impression. It all feels just a little pointless and forgettable. Daxter at least still feels like himself, which is nice. The game is just kinda, fine. However as a PSP platformer, it's definitely one of the best on the system, certainly the best portable Jak game. Great video as always mate, really looking forward to the TLF video

15:50 I love head canon esspecially for the Jak series so I wrote my own for Kras city: Kras city - started as an expansion of Haven city away from the metal heads, it was supposed to help the people of Haven gain some distance from the frontline. But while it was being built, Praxis overthrew Damos and relocated all resources into the war effort. With no money, no help and no way back to Haven city, the people stranded there began to become desprate and resort to illegal dealings. With no governing body, gangs ruled the streets and back in Haven, Krew began his plot to take over Kras city. By using his own personal smuggling methods he bought low in Haven and sold high is Kras, easily overtaking other gangs with the vast resources he had in Haven which they lacked over there. With the constant war, brutal regime by Praxis and all in all low life expectency, the number of citizens remained low while in Kras it just rose up, easily overtaking Haven. Rayn currently rules Kras city as the overboss and isn't planing on reuniting with Haven.

First: we had very similar experiences when it comes to getting a PSP. I also got that same bundle when I got my first PSP and I also got Sonic Rivals 1 and 2 that same year. Only difference is I didn't get the Rivals games until a little later and my first games other than Daxter were Mega Man Maverick Hunter X and Sega Genesis Collection. Anyway, I thought Daxter was fine. I come back to it time to time, but not as much as the original Jak trilogy or other PSP games. I do also think it's the best out of the Jak and Ratchet PSP games, but let's be real; that bar wasn't set too high. Which is why I find it odd that Daxter was the only one out of that set to not get a PS2 re-release, but whatever. One thing I will say is that some parts do drag on a bit too long and I think part of that is how slow Daxter moves in the game. I get it, he's short and the PSP probably couldn't handle him going too fast, but still I think he could've gone just a tad bit faster. But overall, it's a fine game.

I would like to see the rating system to be brought forward in future videos. The ratings are broad and well-defined enough that it's hard for a rating to be "controversial" like with an x/10 scale, it helps to articulate your final opinion on a game after 20+ minutes of points, and it's just interesting to hear in my opinion. You handled it pretty well here, listing your ranks and descriptions of them, then stating what this game got and why. Maybe just do that at the end of future reviews. Do what you want though, I can't force you. Other than that though, I really enjoyed this one. Honestly I really enjoy this, it was my main reason for wanting a PSP back in the day. Replayed it recently on Vita, and I hope it gets a PC port like the PS2 games, although I doubt it since I'm guessing it's not written in GOAL so it'd be a LOT of work. Might see how PSP emulation is. I just wanna be able to play with a proper controller and above 240p... What I remember most about this game is the sheer number of glitches I found all on my own. Fun ones though. Several vents you can walk through instead of crawling just by swinging your swatter to lower your hitbox a tad. The Critter Ridder building can be clipped into when it's blown up by flying over to the new hole and falling in. And at one point you can skip an entire construction site mission by just...going to the end of the level. If you use the bike and flamethrower together to fly over to the exit door instead of the entrance the door will open and the game will progress.

But I could hazard that maybe Jak and Daxter were wild cards in his plan and he didn't originally think of involving himself directly with the pair until Daxter did his ruckus, killed his underling and freed Jak. What better way to handle a pair of wild cards than ingratiating yourself to them firsthand?

This is the only Jak-game I don't own or ever played, since I never got a PSP, but it always interested me. Nice to hear that it's at least pretty good, and the nods to Jak 2 where fun. That game had a simple, but well thought out story, which makes the uneven Jak 3 even more annoying (though I still love that game). Lost Frontier will be interesting, as I own it on PS2, but never finished it, unlike my numerous replays of Jak & Daxter-to-X. I didn't hate it, but I guess I just lost interest, being in highschool when it came out and actually spent time studying and getting friends I could hang out with, instead of gaming all the time. I definitely look forward to your review.

The game was good but hilariously janky. I remember getting stuck in the frozen factory level trying to get out. You had to slide an ice block to a ledge and then jump off of it to fly across to get to the exit. But it barely worked. It was surreal. The wood cutting lodging level was also archaic, I remember getting lost

i also got this daxter psp pack, and didnt even know about daxter being a game at all. and i played jak and daxter on my ps2 i knew the series. and i remember my dad getting me that exact same bundle psp. and i too was a little disappointed that the psp wasnt like green or something for daxter, but ultimately LOVED that psp and got ratchet and clank size matters with it. LOVED those games. and was a huge family guy fan at the time so that psp was just GOLDEN in my eyes. sadly i only played with it for about a year or two before it lost its value to me as the games stopped coming out for it relatively quickly after its release. or at least games i liked and wanted to play.

If there’s one thing to say about this retrospective is how much Sony have let Jak and Daxter lay in dormant for so many years after one failure after ND moved on. This series still has lot of potential to reintroduce a sub genera of sci-fi mythical steampunk kind of vibe and wisecracking characters. If they come back one day and done well, can easily be a return of an icon worthy of baring the PlayStation banner.

I said this in your previous video that I'd like to address again. The whole Jak's uncle could simiply be that he's good friends with Samos to the point that he refers to himself as Jak's uncle. One of my dad's friends is the same way. He was my dad's best friend all his life that he was like a brother to him, so naturally when my dad had my sister and I, he became our uncle. The uncle is an adventurer and i'm sure he took Jak on several which is why he likes it and Daxter was always afraid, cause he probably barely if ever participated. Jak and Daxter going to Misty Island was Jak's idea and Daxter wanted no part as we see in the intro cutscene.

Great video with great knowledge of the contradicting lore of the series. The part about Kor using the old man disguise, i say dont overthink it, its just forced exposition to tie in with why Kor was specifically waiting outside a few moments after Jak escaped. Jak 2 also made feel like it was the last safe place on the whole planet. Kor mentions having seen metal heads taking over Cities, destroying them and devouring humans. I thiught the ravaged the planet until they could pinpoint the location of the precursor stone, but after finding it, maybe they focused all their efforts on Haven, and some pockets of humans elsewhere had their chance to rebuild. Kras City having an entire history of prosperity to the point where they could have competitive racing games is a bit too much. I think they just didnt care much for the lore in that game,.and just wanted to go crazy, and tbh i dont mind, the games atmosphere and story is awesome on its own
