Right on, I painted my lowers with that appliance paint and its holding up pretty darn well, I've been wanting to find someone who used it on their mags so thank you for being the guinea pig. Not a bad look for a $5 can of paint!

Dude that bike is legit. What kind of paint did you use to do the wheels and fork legs?

Thank you very much, your videos are very helpful

I used "Appliance Epoxy", out of a spray can. I will probably have to touch them up every time I get a tire change, but the paint seems pretty tough...

Nice build Joel! I was wondering where you got the parts needed to make the 19" wheel fit the rear? You said it was about $300, but i'm not sure where to get it. LolThanks!

I got the rear spacer kit from Phil Little Racing👍🏼

I have a question, the flat track tires call for 2.5-3.5 inch rims and you have 2.5 inch rims for your sportster , I looked up rims to buy and they all say 2.15 for mag wheels, and the only 2.5 wheels I can find are spoke wheels ...not sure what I'm missing here , any help ?

Your research is all correct, but everyone is using the stock Harley front wheel anyway. It is not always easy to get the tires to seat on the rims, but running tubes takes care of that problem. The thinner rim probably changes the tire's intended profile a bit, but the Harleys are so heavy, and we run lower tire pressure, so it probably doesn't end up making much difference.

Looks great!

Curious what did you paint those mags with?
@camerontakos8366 жыл бұрын
Do you remember the original spacing between your forks before you shaved them down to fit the new fat tire?
@JoelTarquin216 жыл бұрын
Cameron Takos It was just stock spacing, then I took out about 1/8th inch on each side.

Hey joel! your bike is unreal, and im trying to figure out my rear wheel situation myself. are those 19x2.5? rims
@JoelTarquin218 жыл бұрын
Thanks Man! Those wheels are just stock 19x2.5 Harley wheels. On the back you will need an adapter kit that I purchased from Phil Little Racing.

Grinding The lowers on the front fork in my opinion is an abortion. I understand this is supposed to be a budget project. I would have changed the triple tree for something wider. And taping the exhaust? You’ve got a balance tube there. Headers.
@JoelTarquin216 жыл бұрын
TPHVICTIMS Of course wider triple trees are better than a grinder, but they are also one of the most expensive upgrades on a bike. And a header was installed in a later episode. I have built dozens of pro race bikes, and spared no expense. This bike was built to be as inexpensive as possible, and still be able to go racing.

@@JoelTarquin21 be careful, notching the fork stanchions significantly weakens it, in the case of a accident you could be seriously injured. I understand that you are on a budget. Personally I would have used a narrower tyre. Otherwise it is a great bike. Take care!

Can you tell me what the exact size for those maxxis tires is? In the process of a similar build but more MX oriented.
@JoelTarquin217 жыл бұрын
Standard 19" dirt track tires. Front is a 19"x7", back is 19"x7.5.

hey Joel , do you still have your front and your rear Sportster Fender for sale ?
@richardwilhelm61836 жыл бұрын
I am looking for the fenders for my stock Sportster, if you still have them. thank you very much .
@richardwilhelm61836 жыл бұрын
and my Sportster is the same color as your Sportster is., so that would be cool if you still have them fenders
@joewood72255 жыл бұрын
Remember, the tire will swell due to the heat during riding.
@sanfranciscobay8 жыл бұрын
I would have rather used a narrower front tire than grind material away from the front forks so the tire would fit and I would have left the fender mounts on so in case it rains or resell, it could be converted back.
@JoelTarquin218 жыл бұрын
+SanFranciscoBay Real dirt track tires do not come any skinnier than 7", and the fender mounts had to be chopped to make the tire fit. You could purchase wider triple trees from Speed Merchant or Suicide Machine if you don't want to grind your fork legs, but those would have been the most expensive part on the entire bike and this is, as the title implies, an "on a budget' build. And personally, I have never seen a Sportster that is as cool as a Tracker, so I knew there would never be a reason to put a fender back on and turn it back...

Where'd you get those tires and rims?
@JoelTarquin218 жыл бұрын
The wheels are stock Harley front 19" wheels. Most motorcycle shops can order up some dirt track tires.
@law1957 жыл бұрын
What was wrong with getting a tire that fit ? Your friends let you machine the fork tubes?!?! Any research into how thick they were before you hit oil, or just guess at it, and let it ride. (which I'm fine with that) . Actually, still watching the rest of your build, but do the tires rub from flex that comes with riding? or was it enough?
@JoelTarquin217 жыл бұрын
lucifer tubbs Real front dirt track tires only come in 7" width. We just guessed on how much we could shave the fork tube. I don't feel any flex or rubbing.

@JoelTarquin217 жыл бұрын
With both sets of wheels, a brand new clutch, and full service, $4800.
