Welcome to JustTenMoreMinutes aka JTMM aka The Freakin 10! This is a great episode (There hasn't been a bad one yet lol) and really dives into the German offensive but man talk about underestimating your opponents will and means. Brilliant to learn about the Russian set up of railways, octane, etc that really was a primary factor in the war.

Interestingly there is a Radio Tapok reaction video to the cover by Sabaton. While it is in Russian without subtitles it is fascinating material.

To answer your question about Stalin not believing the warning that Germany will invade is due to his paranoia. During the 1930s Stalin decided to Purge the entire Soviet military from the top-down believing that they were planning to overthrow him and had them either arrested or killed, and replaced with those who are loyal to him, and even after that he still couldn't trust them.

22:57 what do you think Russian winters are like? Russia is huge. Moscow is in Europe. Winters in Moscow doesn't differ a lot from winters in Berlin. Temperature - 37 degrees in Moscow is abnormal. That sometimes makes me Believe that our land helps us and sombody from above love and support my country. :) Greetings from Moscow ;)

12:00 interesting fact. There were plan what Will be If Moscow fall. Stavka would be moved to Kujbyshev. It would be morally difficult, but don't think it Will be the fall of USSR. As i wrote earlier, main factories and plants were already moved to east. Anyway, thanks God and our ancestors, that it never happened.

I believe it's mostly a misrepresentation or a false understanding by historians that Stalin "didn't believe" that Hitler would eventually order an invasion. He may have been arrogant, egoistical and paranoid, but he was by no means stupid or prone to underestimating his opponents, you don't rise to his position in the Soviet government and Party hierarchy if you are not competent in military matters and very shrewd and pragmatic in your political plans. I believe that he personally was in denial of the situation, but not in an irrational/insane way; he was perfectly aware of the Red Army's terrible performance in Finland, of the effects of the purges he ordered in the years prior, of the state of equipment, vehicles, tanks, ammunition, artillery... how in shortage all of this was. On top of all of this, the Red Army was undergoing an enormous reorganization at the time of 1940/late '41, from its entire doctrinal philosophy to the command structure, literally everything, based upon the Winter War in Finland and Khalkhin Gol in the East. Stalin knew that if the Germans attacked before late 1941/early 1942., what historically did happen during Operation Barbarossa would happen. He knew that he needed months more at the least before the Red Army would be able to resist an attack by the Axis, and this I believe is why he denied that the Germans would attack in June of 1941., because he knew if they did it would be disaster, and he needed months to be at least minimally ready for an attack. He believed that if he kept feeding the Germans with raw materials, grain and oil, and if they kept warring with the Allies in the West, he would have had the time he needed to prepare sufficiently.

You have several points to observe regarding the invasion of Russia by Germany: Stalin as mentioned below in other comments, had a profound paranoia regarding intel coming from any source. He actually had several of his own spys killed and questioned the reliability of any intel coming from anyone. The pact in place also gave him some false reassurance. From the German perspective, constant delays led to a late start to the invasion but yes, they had the false notion that it would be easier. The idea left after the Winter war with Finland was that the Red army was big but slugish and poorly led. A big paper bear that would be easily overcome in the field. The rest is history...

Stalin did not believe it, most likely because the USSR was MORE than just Russia. You know, it's not small either, but still.) That's how it happened historically. The Nazis did not reach my region of residence. Joakim is cutie, by the way.)) Avatar - Tsar Bomba, please.)) Johannes singing in German.)) It have acapella version in a car. Yep, looks hilarious.
