Asbestos Mine Trail with Phoenix East Valley Off Road - R51 Pathfinder

In this video I join a few rigs from the Phoenix East Valley Offroad group as we climb nearly 1,700 feet in 2.5 miles up FR489 (Pocket Creek, Asbestos mine, aka 'Angel Wings') to Asbestos Point. At one point we almost turned around due to a ~3 foot diameter tree that had fallen across the trail. With a little work we were able to clear it enough to get around.
This trail is rated 6/10 from the Trails Offroad app, and is extremely tight in places (pinstriping guaranteed) and very rugged, with no major obstacles. We had 2 valve stems broken due to rocks. Temporary valve stem came in clutch for me!

I'm always amazed when people take vehicles that weren't made for offroading out on trails. The Pathfinder has 4 wheel drive for dirt roads or bad weather. It did surprisingly well on this trail!

@ianlaughlin85 it's basically identical to the Frontier and Xterra underneath except for the rear suspension and rear differential. Same 4WD system. They are quite capable. I also have a front locker. This was the last good generation, in 2013 they turned into a soccer mom mobile.

@ianlaughlin85 What do you consider offroading? I'm curious because anything with a true low range 4x4 is basically designed for offroad use.

A vehicle with a transfer case that has a low range is far more capable than you think with the right driver. What is your idea of a off road capable vehicle.

Used to be a fairly easy trail before the fires and floods. I took my Polaris Ranger up to the top about 5 years ago soon after one of the floods it was full of boulders and dead fall trees I didn’t think I would make it.

Tonto and TRAL try to keep it accessible as much as possible. I let them know about the big tree and they have plans to clear it out more than we did.
