Wow, what a great video of Juan! I was lucky enough to get to study under him during my senior year at UM. As a non-performance music major, this was a big honor for me, and I can say with complete honesty that every moment in his studio in the old Volpe bldg was time well spent. Among my memories w/Juan: discussions of Parkening, Segovia, all things Cuban, including that thick, sugary tar he brought to work in a thermos each morning (he even shared w/me - to be fair, it was very good). I can still hear his voice sarcastically referring to my student-model instrument as "a piece of wood with strings"! I still play almost every day, but nothing like Sr. Mercadal. What a great guitarist and human being he was. Thanks for posting this!

Juan was my friend when I was a music student at UM. He poured me my first taste of wonderful cuban coffee! He would bring a thermos every day and invite students and colleagues to share it. What a wonderful artist and teacher. And human being.

Once back in mid 90's I called Professor Mercadal out of the blue. I had a fan of his work that was dying to meet him, Henrique Annes from Recife, Brazil, also a Guitar lover. Professor Mercadal was nice enough to delight us with some of his time. There we went to his house in Miami where he entertained us for a couple of hours. What a wonderful time we had!

Juan was a genius. "You are what your philosophy allows you to be. You enlarge your own horizon. You become what you can visualize that you can be. The more knowledge that you have, the more that you know that you don't know enough, that's all!" - Juan Mercadal
