I hope your tears are a mix of joy and sadness, and not just the latter. I know where you are both coming from. My wife and I (both millennials) had this as our first dance at our wedding. I grew up in a "Chicago family" but my wife didn't, despite her being actually from Chicago. Nonetheless, Chicago music is still a big bonding point between us when we get time away from the kiddos. I can guarantee to you that deep down, if your husband was a Chicago fan, he was in touch with his feelings and knew what he was talking about!

I got the 1991 Chicago music CD box set titled Group Portrait. A little book came with that box set. This is from what I remember from that book. Their producer who I think was also a manager named James William Guercio stated something to this effect;, (Happy Man was an unreleased number one.) I think a majority of this paragraph that I cut and pasted is also from that book as well. ---------- The album in this paragraph is referring to Chicago VII------ Cetera, who never claimed to be a Jazz musician, was discouraged about the original concept of the album, and also at his lack of participation as songwriter. He showed Guercio the lilting, Latin-tinged ballad “Happy Man.” “You know when people talk about these flashes of something coming?” Cetera asks. “They do, in fact. Every once in a while, a song will just come out of your mouth, the words and everything. It’s remembering it or having a tape player around when that happens that’s the important part. I wrote “Happy Man” about midnight driving down the San Diego Freeway on my motorcycle. It was the one and only song that I ever remembered, words and music, and I went home and sang it into a tape a day later.” That above cut and paste came from this website about Chicago chicagotheband.com/a-chicago-story/

@@tagomago994 too bad a comparison must always be made. These were two polar opposites; literally one sings in lowest register and other high; even though Peter sings well in midrange, such as the verse parts of Beatles "Got to get you into my life". Unquestionably they both oozed soul. But it is not fair to declare one better than the other, just for the distinct differences in vocal range. Then it comes down to opinion. Terry Kath was marvelous: an enigmatic leader, master guitarist, soulful singer. His death raised him up on a pedestal of perfection and there he will remain for dying so young; as is the case with Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix, so many others. One can't compete with the legendary dead who passed far too soon.

One of the many songs that Cetera wrote to or about his former spouse, Diane Nini, with whom he became involved in about 1973. He really poured his heart out on his solo album, World Falling Down (1992), after they had split. He's never remarried.

poor guy. To think one who writes such amazingly beautiful songs about women and love would not have a lifelong mate. It's not that easy to find the love he sings of though. It is extremely aspirational.

yes. Not NEARLY enough credit has been given Peter Cetera for stepping up and keeping the Chicago we love going strong for eight more totally dedicated years, after Kath's death - despite what would come to be the dizzying parade of guitarists/singers/bassists - until mgmt & the band reneged on a prior agreement for him to make a solo album and issued him an ultimatum, in paper, going back on their prior gentlemen's agreement. Shitty, classless, unprofessional form on the part of CHI & Guercio/mgmt. Just like that, it's our way or the highway and boom; he was too easily kicked to the curb, although it was his decision to split and he was SO ready. Peter came into The Big Thing - pre CTA some 6 months or so after forming and I have always seen, sensed, detected a holding back from most of the band (mainly Pankow who led the horns & was quite vocal (outspoken in his views) from 100% embracing and accepting Peter as one of them, an equal. After Kath, Cetera was the heart of Chicago.

I'm from Detroit, and I was lucky enough to see this concert! One of the many times I've seen them over the years! Jason Scheff had some pretty big shoes to fill when Peter left the group! I've seen him sing this song and he does Damm good!!

I like Jason but c' mon there's no way he could ever match Peters disinctive VOICE , PETER sings this with class and style , this is his song. !!!!!!

@@louisescutti1998 I meant Peter Cetera. Nobody can sing this song better than him!
