I really appreciate these behind battle field events. It’s illuminated a what life was like for those who lived on the fringe of war. Great job thanks!

Fascinating, the man named Early was most famous for being late. I used to ride a ferry boat named for him across the upper Potomac.

That sure is some cleaned up letter from the General. Around here apparently the General took up an earthy vocabulary which is well documented. We even have the grave of the General here in Lynchburg,Va, right next to the stadium!! I really enjoyed this one! Ed from Lynchburg

We have family records from before that date in that courthouse. I did not know that we almost lost them. Good story. Thanks

The cursing Gen Early feuded hard with Longstreet post war over Longstreet ‘s memoirs, stating that Lee had disregarded his objections to charging LittleRoundTop. Though Lee himself took full blame for it.

I am a naturalized Pennsylvanian, and I am familiar with York and the short Confederate occupation. I always found it strange that in his farewell, Early essentially calls on the citizens of this unionist Pennsylvania town to seceed from the Union.

Funny how he used the example that the northern people hadn't suffered like the Southern people had. But the South kind of started the war, right?

That's kinda what i was thinking. Had the South not seceded from the Union, there wouldn't have been any reason to vindicate anyone.

Well, Early tried hard, but no cigar.

Wow $100,000 in to day money how many millions would that be?

Great question! $100,000 in 1864 is worth $1,960,439.49 today, according to the CPI Inflation Calculator. So, Early wanted a cool $2 million in greenbacks.

"monstrous inequity"? not surprisingly Early doesn't count the sufferings of enslaved peoples as being of any account colorful characters like him are not necessarily admirable individuals
