She was right for not debating Nick Fuentes. However, she is completely wrong about a baby being a parasite in its mother's womb. A baby has a symbiotic relationship with its mother. Parasites invade a different species, Embryo's are formed from the mother's genetic material. Parasites generally reduces a species reproductive ability, while an embryo does the opposite. Parasites are harmful and unnecessary to a host, a baby again is the opposite and women who have children generally live longer than women who don't. And I could keep going but the idea that baby is parasite is just crazy. If you want to support abortion you can do that without saying scientifically baseless things and to me its just sad to hear someone call a human life a parasite.

Not how it works. Her arguement was dumb but in good faith. Often times when people see a pregnant woman they think there’s a fully developed baby inside of her but in reality it’s not black and white. Special cases are a thing and consciousness is also a thing. The way we should look at it is by dictating conciousness and whether there is brain activity and prior to 24 weeks it is impossible for the brain to even function in the fetus. Abortions are for the mother’s safety. It’s like how once someone is declared brain dead then they’re as good as dead even if their body is still pumping blood. You can’t retain the consciousness if the brain itself is either not there or is damaged like with brain dead people.

I understand what the lead attorney says about the field being a collection of case studies BUT every case should be individual. Once we start aggregating data in making legal decisions we dehumanize the process and justify the mistakes saying things like "We feel bad we wrongly convicted this person but if you look at the data ...".

3:00 what's funny about this is that this is usually what you expect from younger people, not everyone in these spaces. When I was younger, being able to just argue for the sake of arguing, not necessarily debating your point, is what seemed like the win. Not actually debating your point. It's so wild that that's what debating has turned into and it's just accepted
@Nique253 ай бұрын
I think the actual debate, vs an argument, should allow people to see another point without being attacked for what they believe. So the hope would be maybe it reaches 1 person to make them at least think about something different or think further

idk i kinda disagree i think hearing out and questioning someone, especially who you fundamentally disagree with is productive in both strengthening your moral compass and interrogating why you believe what you believe. i watched one of these debates the other day with nick and id never heard of him but i could see where he was coming from despite not agreeing (up until he said women shouldnt vote i deadass thought that was a joke)
@Ohmeezzy3 ай бұрын
Ideally you are right. If executed properly in a manner in which there is a level of productivity and forwarding along the conversation, then I have no problem with hearing people out. And I think it should be done more. The problem is that this specific platform isn’t conducive to doing that. as far as Nick goes, if you’ve heard him make those same “jokes” repeatedly then you would want no parts in having a conversation with him
@VolcyThoughts3 ай бұрын
“I could see where he was coming from” And there’s the problem. Nick Fuentes is a Nazi who would enslave black people and mass murder Jews. That’s his ideology and he openly admits it. “Seeing where he’s coming from” normalizes that position. You honestly just proved her point with that. We shouldn’t normalize or intellectualize his vile brand of hate.

The thing that I really despise about these later videos are just the moderators. Because they can never control either side in understanding to be quiet and talk calmly to one another. I’m usually against physical contact, but I kind of wish there was multiple hands on board to grab all of these debaters’ mouths shut and say: “Now we’re going to let you open your mouths. And when we do, we’re all going to act like a bunch of civil debaters and come out of this with a middle ground. DO YOU HEAR ME?!?!?!” And then they let go of them when they all nod yes or give a “mmm-hmm”.

i remember learning about political debates in literature from the 1960’s, such as james baldwin debating at universities about civil rights. we would watch videos about structured debates where you could actually learn something through the arguments presented. now instead we have 15 second clips of arguments between grown professionals and university students (who obviously can’t regulate their emotions as well in their arguments against people double their age with fully developed brains) being taken out of context to foster arguments bc it’s engagement, further pushing people apart.

The Destiny clip wasn't even that bad. What Destiny said was fine, but of course TLA's rebuttal makes perfect sense. Doesn't mean what he said about a court case being "A case study for one specific incident" as opposed to "Collecting data from an average to apply to that incident" is...slightly shaky, but it's not like he's being bullheaded about it in the clip. It's not for you, but debate content can and does sway people over time if the person in question makes convincing arguments, assuming you're paying attention.
@Ohmeezzy3 ай бұрын
While the last sentiment may be true, it can still be done in a better and more productive way. I think that the way that destiny and some of these other intimate platforms go about it is the way to do it. There seems to be no time cap on subjects and People are to be held accountable for their thoughts with explanation. There are some platforms that do it better than others.
