It’s interesting that Brevin was voted out because some could relate more to Rob’s struggle, but then, the group later discuss how we over-sensationalize Black Pain. I think this was a great exercise demonstrating the subconscious qualifications for Blackness that we sometimes set for ourselves. I hope this video reminds people that even though there are shared struggles, Black is not a monolith.

It’s crazy how we as black people can understand why they kept Rob in even if we couldn’t relate to what he’s been through. I related with Brevin the most but if I were blindfolded I’d probably keep Rob in too. Like you said subconscious qualifications. But I don’t think we set those for ourselves intentionally. That was a product of white supremacy and most of us just relate to the struggle it created for us. Even though Rob may be the exception and not the rule during these times, it’s important for black people to see stuff like this so that we don’t dangerously teeter on the fence and potentially fall into the vicious cycle of setting those qualifications because in some ways they’ve become norms. And he learned Japanese-American history (internment) through his adopted family and considers himself culturally Japanese, as there are videos of youTube him saying it. @@grahamg4529 and to answer your first question, I think most people are aware of the stereotypes of black people. whether you believe the stereotypes or not is different than being aware of them.

This is so interesting. I once met a black woman (African American), however something was different about her, I mean her language and mannerisms all said "white" to me. I did not tell her, but at one point she told me that she had been adopted by a white family at a young age. As with "black" Rob in this video it proves how much of our behavior is just cultural and not racial.

In my redline suburb, there was only a couple black kids in the whole school district. They fit in with us fine, even popular, but I'm sure there were struggles outside of our peer group. They probably went on to be more successful than me. My mother and grandmother said they were given a hard time just being darker skinned white, brunette, English people in a Dutch community on the southside of Chicago.

100%! That is completely true. Cultural and socioeconomic factors decide who we become. And how much support, love and attention we got from out parents decide how stable we will be in life.

The fact that brevin got voted out because he sounded “too privileged” bugged me soooo much. Not to say RaCiSm DoEsNt ExSisT, but just because your black doesn’t mean you automatically had a hard childhood. Just because your white doesn’t mean you had an amazing childhood either, yes it does effect experiences as a child but if your parents are lawyers your gonna have a better childhood than the meth addicts kids, no matter what race you are.

Im surprised no one brought up the idea of how you can’t “sound black” and just because someone uses common slang, vernacular, and syntax doesn’t mean they’re“more black” or “less black” if they don’t. Shocking to see how know one interjected to be like “maybe we should look more at their experiences, and maybe not just… the sound of their voice” 😂

That’s why I try telling people, it’s a culture thing more than it is a race thing. And no one needs to hate each other, we can all connect and feel each others struggles if we just try. No one is better than another.

"What is a misconception people have about black men?" to which is answered that people label black men as always angry or mad. Same guy that claims "when it came to Brevin, it seemed like he was privileged and I relate more to struggle". Perfect scenario where stereotypes are reinforced by a self-fulfilling prophecy of the discriminated group.

Rosebud’s backstory broke my heart. I’m also mixed and my White grandfather disowned my White mother for marrying my Black father. Having that interfamilial racism that comes with being mixed is such a strange form of trauma that does not get covered enough.
