I could never understand when seniors were saying the typical phrase "It's that phone." After months of lockdown, and glued to my phone, becoming slowly more miserable and depressed, I realized what they meant. Social media can be used in good ways, but the apps are designed to make us scroll, endlessly, and mindlessly, as we disconnect from the true outside world, slowly becoming dumber and sadder. I have since basically deleted all social media on my phone, and use youtube only for a little bit on my laptop every day. I truly see how evil, and mentally destructing social media and our phones are, whether you can see it or not.

"Before social media I just thought I was a masculine girl"- I don't know about this person's case but sometimes I feel like this is actually one of the most detrimental parts of social media. People thinking they must be trans because they don't fit stereotypes. Social media shouldn't be your source of information on such topics. If you think you might be trans you should go to a doctor and get diagnosed with gender dysphoria, not believe some random people on the internet.
@somewhereinspace2166
@somewhereinspace2166 Жыл бұрын
I follow Alex and he's definitely a real trans guy but I agree on the overall point. Being trans has honestly become an internet trend and that's why we have so many detransitioners who end up dissing the community later. These days you don't need to see a doctor for evaluation before medically transitioning, and that's a problem. Even saying that you need Gender Dysphoria to be trans will get you cancelled these days. So people transition on a whim hoping that they'll be 'hip' and it will solve all their problems only to find out shortly later that they ruined their life. You don't even really get clout for it anymore because just about every kid claims to be trans or queer now. The whole mess of it all is just very sad. There's nothing wrong with being trans, but the glorification of it is toxic. It's a very difficult life to lead, even for those who do suffer from dysphoria and actually are transgender. Regret is a whole nother' layer for those who transitioned without dysphoria.

For a lot of gay and trans people the internet provides us with a lot of freedom and information that we don't normally get in the outside world due to the danger of homophobia. You can go to a random doctor, but you don't know if they are safe or not for you. But with social media we can share our experiences and help eachother find doctors that are accommodating. I truly believe the only reason that we have more resources today is because we found eachother through the internet and were able to form a community far beyond the gay bars.

In reference to the “does social media make you anti-social” why would you need an account to tell you to talk deeper? In my mind if you rely on social media to tell you how to feel and act, you are anti social. Those qualities should come from social interaction with a person face to face.

We are in a transition of generations like nothing humanity has ever seen the likes of, where the younger people have a much, much deeper understanding of much of the technology and how it works. We are used to relying on the older people to teach the younger, and set the rules in order to protect the younger. But for these very strange few decades, our elders are very likely to know less about the tech than the kids do. The kids don't have the wisdom yet but the older people don't have the comprehension. We will get to the point where the older people are the people that grew up with technology. But for now... well, here we are.

It has now been a whole month since I permanently deleted my instagram account. It was the only social media account I had (besides LinkedIn and KZbin ????) and it was the best decision of my life. The amount of time I would spend just mindlessly scrolling through a lot of toxic content. I'm so much happier now. When I decided to do it I was really afraid of the repercussions (losing friends, being an outsider) but it made me realized that I have 0 friends that come from social media. All of those people meant absolutely nothing to me, and vice-versa. And I'm not even mentioning all the concerns surrounding privacy.... I highly recommend everyone to just get out. the 2 most followed pro social were really frustrating to listen to(especially the curly hair girl omfg), especially when the non pros would explain why they’re not pro and asking genuine questions, and they just say “well you can just look it up. it’s not the algorithm, it’s you” or “yeah, but social media blah-blah-blah” like huh 🤨. if something is not advertised, people won’t know it exists. how are you going to look for something when you don’t even know it’s a thing? if you are going through a period of mental instability because people are cyber bullying you, your first thought isn’t going to be, let me distance myself and block them✨.you become obsessed with what people are saying about you, it’s literally human nature. we want to know what people say about us because we crave knowledge of ourselves, we want to know how to be better. we will dig our own virtual “graves” by being chronically online. even if you’re a successful content creator, at best there will always be people who look down at you, and at worst there will be insane people willing to cause you manual harm. success can always be taken away, you must have a stable base before building the castle, y’know there is a fine line between enjoying the connections media offers and getting swallowed by the media, and that line can be very thin and slippery

I think the social media that harmed me the most was TikTok. The people in the comments are very opinionated and they also follow the herd most of the time. I once saw a girl posting her makeup look and it was messy, the comments were all “well it’s definitely makeup.” That isn’t going to help her at all. Literally the whole comment section was bringing her down and it was bad. Also, if you have a different opinion or believe something different, you WILL get shut down. For example, let’s say someone was a republican but not necessarily a trump support. An “alt” person will ignore what they have to say because they’re a republican. And that republican isn’t even posting that they’re a republican. The alt person just happened to find out, and suddenly the republican can’t have valid opinions. Tiktok has become so political it’s just hard to get on the app now.

Is it just me that thinks they aren’t talking about the REAL issues about social media? They just say the usual generic thing about how people in pictures are made to look a certain way and to look perfect. Like yes that’s true, but this isn’t something that applies to JUST social media. Comparing yourself with others is something that goes way beyond social media and is more of a personal problem, rather than social media itself. Also because these things apply to tv and being famous and having to be skinny, pretty and perfect looking. This is an issue that applies in tv, adverts, and magazines and anywhere. Not just a social media thing. It just annoys me because when people are asked is social media toxic, peoples automatic reply is “yEs bEcaUse pEopLe aRe mAde tO loOk a CeRtaIn wAy and HaVe tO lOok pErfect.” That is literally the typical generic response. Whereas I feel like there are so many more issues than that. It’s the comment sections on different social media which is the problem. Comment sections are the worst part of social media in my opinion. People will argue over anything and everything. It’s like you cannot give your opinion on something anymore because people will attack you for it and get offended over everything.

That’s also not a social media ONLY problem. I wouldn’t say forums are social media, but there’s opinions there. There are talk shows. Newspapers feature arguments too. And then there’s real life - there are still people who scream their opinions are argue on the side of the street, in bars, in classes etc. Not having a comment section is a form of censorship and I feel like what’s the point of having a content, without starting a conversation... so we’re not supposed to have nice things because we’re scared of bad comments? What about the good comments? What about the smart conversations? So are we only supposed to have a comment section where everyone agrees? They did mention it, and think this is something everyone thinks of. But they normally say ‘trolls’ or ‘haters’. EMI had her own story how the comment section ruined her. You also see the irony in saying you think the comment section is the worst feature, by posting a comment right? (I am not attacking you, just making a passing comment!)
@noodlesx8506
@noodlesx8506 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndSoWeLaughed I am not sure if you properly read my comment, but I already know that social media isn’t the ONLY problem. I had already said that. In fact, I had already agreed and put that in my original comment. I said things like TV and magazines and stuff. yes I agree, not having a comment section is a form of censorship. I never said we shouldn’t have a comment section. And yes,there definitely are good parts with having a comment section. It gives everyone a chance to share their own thoughts and views. And yes,there are good comments and yes there are smart comments too; I never said there wasn’t. In fact, all of your questions- I never even said. I never even said that a comment section should be where everyone agrees. Your questions come across as you think I would of agreed to that, when I don’t. I was just saying the comment section is the most toxic part in MY personal opinion. Based on what I normally see on here is filled with people constantly arguing with other peoples opinions rather than being respectful and trying to understand each other’s side. People twist each other’s words, play on words or exaggerate on words, or twist what someone has said. Also people never tend to read things properly, or don’t tend to read things in its entirety. I also just think that not many people seem to have a civil or intellectual conversation on here from what I have noticed. It just seems to be “you’re wrong, I’m right” type of comments. And yes trolls are a problem too, but I mainly just mean people with the genuine lack of respect.

alexa and philips both expressed that they got their confidence from social media. neither of them realize that that is a problem. your confidence has to come from within, not from chasing likes on social media. there are rich and successful celebrities that still struggle with depression because after getting all the fame and money and prestige and love from strangers, they realize they are still unhappy with themselves. it is fully unhealthy for your self-worth to rest in the hands of others.

I agree with this post fully because I can relate to it. I used to have a tik tok account and I blew up. I found myself gaining the confidence that I never had experienced before social media. As time went on I found myself seeking for validation from anyone who came across my account. The feelings was of tiredness and heaviness because I thought i needed to make certain videos to fit the trends. My goal before I had blew up was to just have fun. Overtime, my goal on social media changed greatly to getting those likes and that “famous” persona. At school, I kept it a secret until my friends found my account and I started getting know as the tik tok girl. I found myself using my idols as a front to get my “famous” attention and some of my siblings noticed that and confronted me about it. What did not help was that my friends found it cool and started asking me to be in their videos or lets film a tik tok after class . Social media is good at the beginning but if you use social media to gain confidence then that’s when you know you need to stop. In the long run, social media is not good for you at all. I stopped and I am just a little lost but I feel more free. My confidence was low but overtime I am found the confidence in me because it was always in me from the beginning. Getting rid of social media or perhaps taking a break from social media will show you things you never had noticed before in your life. You will feel more free and at ease with yourself because you do not have that mentality of what does this person think about me.

I can not put into words how wrong this truly is. I tried and ended up on a rant I’m sure no one wants to listen to. I’ll just say I’m objectively pretty and have gotten much worse bc I am pretty but it’s not from the girls or women it’s the men. You become nothing more than an object that can never be perfect to them all the while they rape you and remind you of how close you were but not quite there. I’ve had a lifetime of backlash from so many different guys it makes my head spin. Everyone is so obsessed with perfection the uglier I try to look the easier my life gets and the less hate I receive. I’m sure what she has is hard I’m not downplaying that but your statement is ignorant

I feel like we shouldn’t dismiss it though, you are dismissing her feelings just because she’s objectively pretty.

I'm surprised they didn't bring in someone who didn't have any social media at all. I feel like they missed a valuable perspective there.

I feel like the members of jubilee are themselves so drown the media culture that they only reach out for people through a screen Therefore they don't connect that much with people outside the vicious circle

@@emi_not_emmy I love the way you dress! You have a style that I'm trying to go for. Anyways people are really mean, that's not gonna change, I honestly empathise with your experience, but that, on my momma, does not define who you are. And it may be hard to accept that, but that does not define who you are I repeat, that does not define who you are. I would've enjoyed having you as a friend in highschool!
