In this corner, we have Tim "Ripper" Owens! And in this corner, we have Rob Halford! Shake hands and come out fighting! (Respectfully). WHO DID IT BETTER? Judas Priest!
JUDAS PRIEST Replacement Singers - Who Did It Better? Rob Halford - Tim (Ripper) Owens
Rob Halford’s command of the audience often involved him looking directly toward the crowd as if to directly call someone out and Tim Owens also exhibited his own dominance on stage.
The unique story of Tim replacing Rob was the inspiration for the movie The Rockstar and I’m looking forward to hearing what you thought. Who Did it Better? Let me know in the comments!
Rob Halford’s charisma was off the charts and as we look at some of his live performances we’ll also discuss his songwriting and the incredible energy and showmanship he brought.
We’ll then compare Tim Owen’s big, girthy sound and look at how his singing stacked up to Rob along with his long, belted screams.

Halford invented Halford, and will always be an original. Owens stands on his shoulders, along with other metal influences that might make him a more versatile singer. I hear a little James Hetfield in his lower register, as well as others who have been mentioned, some who arrived after Halford's formative years. I feel like I might run into Tim, a hardworking journeyman, in a bar somewhere, whether he's gigging or just watching football, whereas part of Rob's charisma is that he seems to have stepped off of a spaceship.

@@barrysmith839 He has a point Barry. Halford is my favorite vocalist for many reasons. He writes amazing lyrics, he has a huge presence, his unique phrasing is something only he does. He doesn`t scream all over the place, only where the song recorded one. His softer tones in early days are a thing of beauty. I have a few guys that I really like as singers, and some are just great performers and make up for their limited range with charisma. David Lee Roth is a great frontman( was) with swagger. I don`t know why so many people revere Paul Rogers. He is a good singer, but he doesn`t really do anything special. He is a typical 70`s rock singer and a good one, but that is all, no superman. The guy saying Roger is a rock singer and Halford is a metal one is true, but why did he even say that?? That remark came out of left field. Now... Owens has more power in his chest than Rob. But Rob is THE man. He is called the Metal God for a good reason. He has the whole package. You cannot replace him. You can get a great vocalist like Owens to sing and be technically stronger, but Halford can not be replaced by anyone, ever.

I am an iced earth fan as well until around 2013 but to me like priest and maiden with Bruce and Rob. Matt Barlow is the voice of iced earth. And I say that today. Considering stu block. Where stu seemed to be more in Matt's range as a baritone but would over act compared to Tim or Matt. Personally for Tim I think at the time when the 2 Pantera guys did damage plan before dimebag Darrel was tragically killed they should of had pat Lachman on second guitar with dime and had Tim Owen's be the frontman. Instead of pat. Because at the time Tim had more of that kind of early Phil Anselmo voice before Phil went extreme. Nowadays I think Tim is a much better singer especially with kks version of judas priest. Still not Halford but a much better vocalist

The danger for you, Ken, when you are judging great singers, is that, because you are such a great singing teacher and know so much about technique and even the anatomy of the voice, that you may miss seeing that magical element that escapes critical judgement. Maria Callas, definitely the greatest soprano of the 20th Century, if not all time, had both a beautiful voice and an ugly voice. She had faults, sometimes technical faults, but somehow she turned even those into unique virtues which made her stand out from more conventionally perfect singers. Rob Halford is the same. His voice is both beautiful and ugly, dark and light, good and evil, in such a way, that it becomes compelling to listen to. Tim "Ripper" Owens is a more conventionally perfect singer than Rob Halford but does not possess that unpredictable magic that only a genius possesses. The same holds true for your video on AC/DC. Brian Johnson may be the conventionally more perfect, even better, singer than Bon Scott but Bon Scott is a one-off, iconic, magical personality, beloved and adored in Australia, because he reflects the Australian larrikin character so completely.

The ACDC conversation is one that is almost unfair to have too, in my opinion. You get to hear Brian Johnson's decline across over 40 years worth of harsh singing... but Bon Scott up and died so quickly that everyone remembers him when his voice was at its strongest.

I'm friends with Ripper's guitarist, Nick, from back when he fronted the Priest tribute band, British Steel. Seeing our hometown boy go on to front the actual band was surreal. Tim knew Rob would probably return at some point and was totally okay with it. That whole opportunity opened doors for Tim which otherwise would have been nonexistent for a Northeastern Ohio musician.

Here is the thing about both singers. Rob Halford went through several different vocal periods. From the beginning up until say 1980, his voice was exceptional. But from 1980 - 1985 he was drinking a lot and his voice was very inconsistent. His pitch would jump all over the place and many times they would add delay on his screams to lengthen them live. But in 1986 he got sober and up until the Painkiller tour his voice was off the charts. He had unlimited range and control. Some of the most impressive singing I have ever heard. When he left Priest and formed "Halford" he was in spectacular form, and I content that everything he has done (albums and live) since returning to Priest pales in comparison to what he did with "Halford". Tim was amazing. Simply amazing. His power, control, and epic upper range was stunning. Wickedly underappreciated! I happen to love the two albums Tim recorded with Priest. Take "Victim of Changes". Perhaps THE classic Priest song of all-time and compare what Rob did on "Unleashed in the East" and the full version of what Tim did on the "Live in London" video that Ken used for portions of his comparison in this video. That is prime vs. prime and while I never suggest one is "better" than the other, there are elements of Tim's performance that I prefer. His second verse is one of the greatest sustained screams I have ever heard. The "You're tryin' to find your way again" section and when he pushes the already sustained scream way up the scale is breathtaking. Also, do yourself a huge favor and listen to Tim destroy the King Diamond track "Abigail" live for the Road Runner records birthday concert. It's perhaps one of the greatest vocals covers I have ever heard. Both are magnificent singers. Rob, the original and singularly unique. Tim exceptional as well. It is just so difficult to replace an icon no matter how great you might be, and Rob's legacy proved to be too much to overcome.

Ripper is incredible. Always been a fan. He was a fantastic lead vocalist for Priest. I respected him because he had the skills to sing all of the material without being a clone of Halford. Owens did not create the sound nor did he write the famous Priest tracks; instead, he took what already existed, cranked it up with his thicker (younger?) voice, and drilled it home until Rob decided to return. A hell of a ride, an incredible but ultimately sad story for Tim "Ripper" Owens.

I became a Judas Priiest fan for 2 albums, Jugulator and Demolition. Those albums were just so brutally heavy and macabre and I loved them! They took the music to some dark and heavy areas they hadn't been before. And the songs were so unstructured and free form which I loved whereas before they were becoming a bit predictable. It's almost as if they were a new band with newly tapped unrelenting energy. That said Rob Halford is one of the nicest classiest human beings you could ever hope to meet. Interestingly Rob recently said he listens to Dio before he performs live as a way to get psyched for the show. Pure class!

We seem to make subjective judgements based on our love for a particular singer. But as Ken said, if we were to objectively break down Tim's voice and live performances, he slaughters Halford with his variety and vocal control. Tim is by far the most underrated singer in Metal
@gib59er56
@gib59er56 Жыл бұрын
He might be technically stronger with a better chest, shows he was obviously trained. But "slaughter" is just not right. What about his songwriting? W@hat about his melodies. What about his charisma? A very strong voice, no doubt. Younger and never went thru coke and drinking and taking a band from a local act to the most Revered and respected bands in the world because of his vocals, lyrics and command. He stepped into a proven , veteran well oiled Maserati. Good for him!! He fulfilled his dream. Super set of pipes. Powerful. Halford is much more than a voice.
@WurzHurz
@WurzHurz Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Charisma and personality is what matters more than any technique. Even when Halford sang technically bad on some shows, he still had all the spirit that moves you. Nothing Tim does moves me. He actually sings like a karaoke singer; that's the problem. Spirit is EVERYTHING! Personality always wins artistically over training or technique. If this isn't true, a vocal-computer would be the best singer in the world. Music is not about who sings louder or holds a note longer.

I agree Josh. Ken you should check out the Glorious Burden from Iced Earth. Tim replaced Matt Barlow, who has one of the most unique voices of all time. Tim killed it. Check out that album and also, please do a review on Matt Barlow form Iced Earth (particularly Travel in Stygian off the Alive in Athens video. It’s on KZbin you can find it right away). Thanks and great video! I love Ripper and glad to see him get the credit he deserves. He’s also a great guy as well.

For the record, I would have to choose Rob as the one to do it better. There were definitely some times that Rob wasn't the best singer live especially before he got sober. And Tim is a monster on the mic. But still gotta love Rob Halford. The newest album is killer too. Very powerful voice. I think he sounds even better now that he sings a lot more in chest voice than he used to

I’ve been a Halford fan since I first heard him in the mid-80’s and I styled my own singing style on his. Having said this, I feel that Rippers slower live version of Diamonds and Rust is one of the best live performances I have ever heard. Both vocalists are of the highest level but Halford just had the pedigree and stage presence which made him the legend he rightly is.

It's a really great video! Sometimes you just expressed my own feelings ;). Anyway, I was a teenager in the 90s and I supposed I would never see Priest live. And then suddenly the Ripper line up came about and I was just blown away by his and the band's performance. It's something I'll hold forever in my heart. I also add that my favourite singer ever is Rob. But Tim did a more than worthy job when Rob went to walk on his own bizarre ways. :)

I think Ripper did an excellent job stepping in, what a feat to take on. Ripper has also become a much better singer since his days with Priest. His current work with KK's Priest is just sensational. With all that said, Rob Halford is a force to reckon with, especially during the 80s, just so commanding and nobody could touch him, he is a legend. They are both great singers, and although similar they are different. Great video, loved the analysis.

Tim in helloween no but that's another conversation. But there's a connection there considering when kai hansen left helloween of which he was the original vocalist not micheal kiske he formed gamma ray with Ralph sheepers. Who was the other vocalist in contention to replace Rob Halford in priest at the time. And would have been the better choice to me to replace the great Rob Halford. But then again if Ralph had been chosen fans would not have missed Rob Halford so much. Don't Believe me do a you tube search and type in tyran pace and listen to their first album and a song called eye to eye from 1984 which sounds very similar to the priest song you've got another thing coming. As tyran pace was Ralph's bans before he joined gamma ray. Which did 3 albums before breaking up. In 1988

Sounds like you guys prefer the replacements with the exception of helloween me with queensryche and crimson glory I prefer the original guys Midnight and goeff tate. Regardless of the circumstances. Wade black vs midnight is like apples and oranges. With wade black sounding like a hairband singer. If you want to do a comparison where both the original and replacement were on equal footing metal church was a good example with David Wayne vs Mike Howe. Sadly both are dead now And Ronnie munroe could not match either of them live.

@gabrielstern4992
@gabrielstern4992 2 жыл бұрын
@@sascha294 yep at the time he would have been the better choice. As part of the reason he left gamma ray in late 1994 was due to his bieng a top contender to replace Rob Halford in judas priest and this was before Ralph started balding and going with a shaved head. Just like Halford. The proof is also in the 2 covers gamma ray did of priest songs one with kais vocals and one with Ralph's vocals. Primal also did a killer cover of metal gods. But even more proof has to do with the first gamma ray video heading for the east from 1990 ralph was on fire and even sang helloween songs and I hate to say it but sang them better than micheal kiske. Did. Kai also would have at the time sounded better than Tim. But he is a guitar player also so that's why I did not mention him.

Tim, right now, is the same age as Halford was when he recorded Angel of Retribution. Ripper Owens sounds leagues better than Rob did when he had Tim's age. One missing question is longevity. Could Owens sing as good if he wasn't "new" to the game and had the same "mileage" as Halford? ;) Both great singers and showmanship. Extra credit to Rob Halford for inventing the style and making it easier for others to follow up and improve on it.
