It was his own idea to interpret his role in that fashion, because he knows that he cant play as a classical 9. He has been playing that way for years, but at this euros it became clear that either he is starting to get past his zenit as a player, or he was simply injured or it may have been a combination of both. Anyway he should have never been the starting option in the first place after his lackluster group stage perfomances.
