Depends on what your state has done. Massachusetts had the overhaul over 20 years ago. Obviously, Texas has not. What’s called “welfare” is federal money _administered by the states._ Your state sets the rules. If the rules are lax, that’s what the state has chosen. Never forget, the more people a state has on welfare, the more fed money they get. Since many federal aid to states programs are based on or take into consideration how “poor” the state is, making your state have fewer “poor” people means less federal money for that state. Overhaul has to be in state legislatures and the governors chosen.

@@alainaaugust1932Budget allocation often works in a similar manner. In the UK I worked at a council ran facility that was due to close for major renovations. Two weeks before this closure a contractor team arrived to repaint the changing rooms. Why paint an area that is about to be ripped out and replaced? If the maintenance department did not use up its painting budget then it would not be reallocated next cycle. A total waste of time and resources.

She’s in Texas?! Of all states why haven’t they figured out what Massachusetts figured out 20 years ago? The last welfare receiver I spoke with complained because if she did not look for work, document that with names and phone numbers of at least 5 potential employers, and turn in the form then “they’d take my money away.” Yep, “her” money, not the taxpayers. Massachusetts has a robust aid program for the truly needy, but they don’t last forever and include job training. That is, they gently but firmly mandate job training, no matter how many kids you have, as in “job training or the money stops.” Plenty of work, especially in tech, in Massachusetts. So y’all Texans, move on up. Bring the kids.
