Some judges do take it into consideration when you've been provoked as extenuating circumstances. Had it been Mathis he wouldn't held the plaintiff in contempt of court for speaking after he told her not to and dismissed her case with no compensation. They really can interpret the law how they want and sentence accordingly with all the discretion they have; unrighteous judges just do whatever they want all day with no regard to the law and issue unfair sentences all the time based on theur personal bias, but judge Faith does try to be fair.

Relying on the justice system entails a chance of having 12 people who stopped learning after high school to decide your fate. I'll take my chances with Judge Faith. Also, there are different degrees of murder. Manslaughter, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Capital. If she was provoke it's called a "Crime of Passion," often times you're showed mercy and likely to get manslaughter or lighter sentence. If it's Premeditated or you're committing a crime then you're done.
