I think they did it on purpose. That they destroyed their own case to keep it from reaching an appeal that they both knew that they'd lose. This case is DOA once it hits honest judges, and Merchans behavior gets carved into the stone the moment that it hits the appeals court. The moment it hits the appeals court, they're going to scrutinize the hell out of Alvin and Merchans work. That's where their sins will become permenant instead of something that they could mistrial their way out of. They already have the convicted felon ads on the air. The damage has been done. They can now afford to give Trump a fairish trial that Alvin will now lose because he's not a fed who can charge people for federal crimes like lying to the FEC. This case was DOA the moment Alvin attempted to nominate himself to the FEC.
