If sweeps are killing felonious criminals, that is a benefit. I don't want to hear any bleeding heart bs if you haven't lived with homeless camps with all these problems and shootings on your block. I do. I am liberal af. I have been homeless many times. These people deserve nothing as they do nothing to help themselves. I stopped abusing shit and now I make six figures, and I have no sympathy for people who don't ditch the boots without bootstraps and get themselves some with so they can help themselves. I did it. It was difficult. Very difficult. I worked 18 hour days . 2 full time jobs for years so I could study in the time I wasn't working. Now I am an engineer. Your heart may be in the right place, but take it from me - most of the people I knew on the street were out of prison and need to be put back there. I never met one person who lost their job and lost their apartment. They are almost exclusively people so shitty their own families wouldn't help them (looking at myself on this too). Bleeding hearts and sympathy will only enable and condone the trashing of our streets. Why? Just to make you feel better about yourself? Don't vote against sweeps. Don't sit there smug drinking your latte while your street is quiet and mine is trashed. You have no moral superiority

The homeless encampments are getting out of control all across the Bay Area. Not trying to be rude, but I feel these homeless people are getting to comfortable and entitled. If we all have to get up and go to work, pay taxes and rent etc. There is no excuse why they can't either. I'd say get rid of all encampments and make it a crime to create housing on the streets like other states.

I strongly support legislation making it illegal to sleep and camp in public areas throughout CA. I also support voluntary AND involuntary (court-ordered) mental health treatment as one long-term solution to address the underlying causes for homelessness in CA. Court-ordered (involuntary) treatment is NOT a new concept because other states like AZ already do this. It’s compassionate safe care that is appropriate for instances where severe mental illness leads to danger to self or others, chronic homelessnes, or incarceration. AND the treatment is NOT permanent because patients are reassessed until they are safe to discharge. CA needs to ACT FAST to address the core issues behind our states growing homelessmess crisis before it’s compounded by the massive influx of asylum seekers! CA has the highest number of homelessness in the US because there isn’t enough housing for extremely low-income households. There’s only 24 homes affordable and available for every 100 extremely low-income households in CA. Secondly, only 1 in 4 households nationwide qualify for rental housing assistance. If you add severe mental illness and addiction, that further increases the risk of homelessness. The logical long-term solutions are to (1) increase the number of affordable housing options, (2) increase the availability of safety net programs, and (3) expand the behavioral health system to decrease the homelessness population. Source: The California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness by UCSF BHHI - Full Report In terms of cost, why should tax payers care about housing homeless people? It costs less to house homeless individuals than to spend public funding on repeat visits to the ER, inpatient hospital units, detoxification units, and jails. Source: The National Alliance to End Homelessness

Or we can just throw them into the already overcrowded prison system and put them to work with some public works projects. Lot of potholes need filling. Lot of needles on the streets need picking up and lots of chop shop bikes need to be returned to their owners. Prison labor is basically free since they’re only paid pennies per day. Saving us lots of money. Oh and these druggies will also be forced to pay for their prison stay as long as it may be. It’s a debt to society and the tax payers. Restitution for the damages and emotional stresses we went through. If they can’t pay then they’re put on a list of non paying moochers and get moved to death row. There’s no reason to keep people around who are a burden and drain.

Is there any introspection on the part of the Homeless as to how or why they've failed to meet their Responsibilities of Adult Living??? It's a failure on their part and I'm not their keeper. Mostly what I hear is that they're Homeless because I personally work 60-80 hours a week and I have a good income. I'm personally responsible for pricing them out of the market. If everyone would just stop working so hard we could collapse the economy and that would bring prices down. I was actually told that by a Homeless person receiving free food at our church. I'm not sure that they want to work hard and become housed as much as they want to bring us down to their level. You're a product of your Choices not a Victim of your Circumstances. The Homeless need to get their act together and take advantage of the opportunities that have been offered to them. If you're Homeless, you're not the shot caller, the person offering the help is. Most of the Homeless that I've dealt with are 20 years behind where they should be and they have absolutely no idea how that happened. Just excuses that the help offered to them is not acceptable.

Look, its the majority of people in any given city makes things happen. It should not be based on what a city council or mayor says. We pay taxes and therefor have the God given right to demand officials to do what the people want! Berkeley officials have run too long on their own egotistical views on protecting homeless people, when they are not the majority of those living within Berkeley's city limits. Put them either in Jail or into rehab as their thinking is distructive to themselves and others.
