@@onestepbeyond7240 Forty five should've been the sentence. In '17/'18 in San Joaquin County (CA) a DUI defendant received three consecutive fifteen year terms for killing three. It's the respective weight and speeds/direction of the colliding cars, elasticity of the collision, seatbelts or ejection from the vehicle and typically drunks have slower response time and don't tense up. So it's a lot of factors at play here. I think to a certain degree it may also be our perception of the crashes due to news coverage, because if the drunk dies, there's no trial, so no extensive coverage

I think crying when receiving a life sentence is pretty normal. Most of us would've done the same, myself included. But her crime was driving while drunk. I'm not saying it's right, or that she isn't responsible for those deaths. She absolutely is. I'm saying it's not like she is a cold blooded killer. She got drunk and went for a drive, which is very, very wrong, but it isn't difficult to believe that she never wanted anyone to die. It doesn't surprise me to hear drunk drivers feeling awful when they learn someone died as a result of their actions.

Realize judges should have flexibility in sentencing, but DUI sentences vary widely. Here in San Joaquin County a judge sentenced a drunk driver back in '16/'17 to three consecutive terms of fifteen years each for killing three for a total of at least forty five years. How she received less than half with a prior DUI is puzzling. This judge definitely isn't a rookie. Always questioned this country's attitude towards DUI. Over 12,000+ killed yearly the last fifty years. Just a day in jail on first offense. Charged a misdemeanor unless there's bodily injury. $1,900 fine. Six months license suspension. A year of DUI classes. At least a point. Car towed: used to be held for thirty days. At least face five days in jail w/$2,500. (old fine) Don't forget Pelosi's DUI, which was almost a pass by the Napa County D.A. Historically in Napa County wealthy DUI drivers were not only given a pass, but a drive home by the Sheriff. Yup. Just incredulous.

After the strokes and kidney failure it was so much worse. We don't have a good relationship, but I still breakdown at the thought of her leaving this world. These poor children... Beyond eartbreaking... I hope they have supportive family members to care for them. If there is any sort of fundraiser set up for these kids, I'd like to donate.
