It seems like the mother signed over her money(to the daughter) so she would qualify for subsidized housing/medical. The daughter ended up using the money to buy her own house, saying she would, "pay it back". Both sides of this case are a bit shady and not really putting their mother first. So sad and it's going to be even worse as the mother's health fails/after she passes.

JJ's math has me confused. So the plaintiff said after the sale of the property there was $100,000 profit and the sibling said she got 42%, so $42,000 and the plaintiff got $58,000. The mother would only have got $180,000 if the property was fully paid off. In the UK you can't suddenly give money away so you can get benefits.

Man... I am the oldest of three siblings and we have watched various members of our family fight and sneak and steal and such over belonging of dead relatives. I watched my grandmother be terrified of that happening to her (and a couple family members really tried to pull that crap like my aunt) and my mom makes jokes about us fighting over her stuff when she's gone but I know there is a fear in the back of her head that makes her think it's possible. When dad died unexpectedly almost a year ago (Oct 21), none of us fought over a damn thing! In fact, mom was trying to sort through the stuff and said we could take what we wanted but we were very respectful with each other. He had 4 Hawaiian shirts that he was known to wear all the time. Mom gave me first pick because I just HAPPEN to be at the house and asked her if I could wear one to my daughters swim meet so he coukd be there with us. I washed it and tried to return it and she told me I could just keep it. When my brother came down to visit, he picked next and we were fumbling over ourselves trying so hard to make sure we were taking a shirt that maybe someone else might have a greater attachment to. We all have the same mindset and I've made sure my mom understands this..... there is nothing she has that is worth dishonoring her memory over. If there's something I really want but my sister has it, I know I can always go see it at her home or we would probably pass it around the family. My little sister has control of the finances when mom passes and my little brother and I have no upset with that. At the time, I was so deep in my depression from losing dad that I was abusing my meds and wasn't reliable and my brother lives 10 hours away right now. She said she will change it to add me but I don't carenif she does or doesn't. I KNOW my sister will do right and even if she doesnt.... my mom's memory is more important than any dollar amount. Besides, the way I see it not to be cruel or anything... I have a spouse so I have fall back and help. My brother has a spouse so he has fall back and help. Our sister is 30 with MS so she chose not to have kids and isn't into the dating scene. As her disease gets worse, she will need more medical intervention. And honestly..... I want her to travel and have fun and do as much as she can because she will likely go before I do. So she can keep the money if she needs it. We are NOT EVER going to fight over stuff when we lose our mom

Judge Judy is wrong about the senior housing. While it’s true that a person has to spend down their assets to get Medicaid in a nursing home, it’s not true of senior/retirement apartments, at least in WA state.
