Thanks for the great interview, Ted. The one negative about competitions and overall piano culture is that I feel it is a turn off for most people who don’t play. There is a perception of elitism in piano that I believe prevents your average person from getting into piano. People don’t realize that there is a lot of less difficult material to play that is fun and very satisfying to learn. People feel that it’s Chopin or go home. They then buy a guitar, which unfortunately is a much more difficult instrument to play at a decent level.
