Masterpiece, period. There's no Song from the last quarter of a century I can think of that rivals the artistry of this song. Everything about it is unbelievably skillfull, tastefull and emotionally strong. Composition, arrangement, the strings, the singing, the lyrics and intent of the song, and even the video. Not only does it send a powerful message of emancipation... but every contemporary artist who sees this will shut up for a minute and rethink his or her life and the purpose and quality of his/her own art... love it.

i came to this video after reading an article on Hill in the NYTimes. I was skeptical at first (which, of course, says nothing about Hill and a lot about me and my predictable tastes and temperament). Al I have to say, having finished listening for the first time, is that this is as stunning as the best Jazz and classical I happen to have.......this is the sort of music/performance which makes me want to drop whatever chore I'm doing, sit down, open up, and just LISTEN. It's a rare combination of obviously complex and direct. What a gift......
