Agree completely with your points, and it's interesting to hear you confirm what I suspected about judo re: high level judoka focusing and specialising in just a handful of throws. I just started Judo recently (traditional style, 50/50 nage and ne waza) and have found myself wanting to just practice a single throw until I get good enough to be able to pull it off reliably in randori.

It's funny, cause this has been the unfortunate biproduct of the SPORTS-ization of Judo. When many of us learned, not so long ago, you still had to apply and perfect a whole array of very different techniques. If you could not apply them on a non-cooperating opponent, you were simply not awarded the belt. If you did not show competency in actual competition, you were also, additionally, not allowed to move upward. On the other hand, those on the "sports track" were made into muscle machines that learned like 3 different throws and were awarded black belts automatically so that they would look good in competition. Real JUDO is actually a very subtle sport which should have been more like a more explosive Ai-Kido.

@@davida.rosales6025 I completely agree. I hate the sportification of judo, I've won plenty of matches using traditional style and practice 20 throws instead of my opponent's 3-5.

As a boxer I can confidently say that when he was mentioning the fundamental differences between striking and grappling is that grappling is harder. I disagree, we also have to "move" people and adjust for leverage, weight, literally everything he said, and the reason why it is harder is that your head isn't getting blasted at the same time that you're using tactics/strategies/ring generalshipjsut dominating different styles etc. In grappling I will admit it is incredibly hard but just as grappling has a "flow" "dance" boxing has the same except you're getting hit and possibly don't have the time to even think properly, where as in grappling you can go very hard as well as in comp yet your head is on straight, you're not suddenly getting concussions back to back, brain injuries, etc.......hence why boxing is considered the most dangerous of all arts, due specifically to the gloves. The gloves let your brain take more concussions rather than MMA where you can take 5 good shots or even one and the fight is over because you got knocked out. Boxing isn't as merciful....hence why elder boxers are slurring their speech from brain trauma where as in MMA you can be old as shit and still a champion since they don't go through the traumas that boxers go through..... unfortunately the boxers gloves is also their downfall health wise. In grappling you can continuously make mistakes and still come back from them yet....in the words of legendary grappler John Danaher "you make a series of blunders in boxing and you're unconscious"

Very knowledgeable individual. It was informative and well delivered . One mention I have as a guy coming from Judo and now doing both BJJ and Judo: it's true a judoka relies on a handful of techniques but I found that those techniques are harder to master and takes countless repetition under professional supervision to be really good. I found that in BJJ took me less time to learn a technique to a decent level. But I absolutely love both Judo and BJJ 👍

The issue is not knowing the throw, is being able to perform it agains a resisting opponent. It's finding the set up, getting the kumi kata you need, salvaging the throw when the circumstances aren't perfect. Within a month of training jiu jitsu you can actually roll with a partner. Within a month of judo you can't even begin to think about randori, the most you can do is to exchange 1 or 2 throws with your partner playing uke. Also, jiu jitsu has a lot more techniques because you get different names for any small variation, while in judo you have the same name for every type of triangle choke (wheter from the guard, the mount, reverse), or for every head and arm choke and so on. They are "families" of techniques, with many sub techniques inside. The "double leg" (morote gari) family groups together 3 or 4 types of double leg takedowns that in wrestling or jiu jitsu would have different names under a single umbrella.

I keep honest a do my best to fight and throw too, but I know I’ll be ok most of the time when taken to the ground. You can say the same with wrestling.

Great comments and discussion - Traditional Judo used to be the complete grappling art - those Judoka that trained including leg locks /grabs Atemi Waza ( strikes/kicks)were very capable - then sport Judo stripped it over time to essentially wrestling - BJJ is now popular as it allows alot of Techniques that sport Judo banned -

George Gracie learned Catch Wrestling from a professor named Orlando Americo da Silva, know as Dudú. And in fact taught Catch side by side with BJJ in the Fluminense social club. This all can be proved by the Facebook page "George Gracie". So there you go, the bigger difference between the two, bjj is judo mixed with Cacc.

Well, first work on breakfalls. Then I would focus on footsweeps like de ashi barai and ko uchi gari, with perhaps an o Soto gari in the mix. Avoid high amplitude throws where the other person is lifted high unless you have proper instruction. You can’t do BJJ or Judo with a cracked vertebrae.

Every single technique you decided to lump under jiu jitsu because it it is ne waza... is JUDO. Every one. Yes I heard your qualifying statement that by judo you meant standing and by Jiu jitsu you meant ne waza. WTTF?? Brazilian jiu jitsu came from judo. as did all the ne waza you took away from judo in your description. To receive Shodan in Judo you have to perform every one of those throws as well all of ne waza, all of the escapes etc... and you have to compete and win in live competition to get promoted. (In most schools anyway). Im tired of this. Maeda or whatever his name was taught carlos and helio and gastao or whom ever JUDO. HE TAUGHT THEM JUDO. yes the Greates familily in martial arts history and namely Helio developed ne waza to a great degree and turned into what is rightly referred to as Gracie JiuJitsu... but make no mistake ... It came from JUDO. Yes the competition strategies are different blah blah... but show me something Rickson Gracie does that is not Judo. Berimbolo? nope. doesnt do that. Spider guard? DeLaRiva? nope nope. He doesnt do those things. he's doing Judo. Yes indeed Ive probably been tapped by every BJJ black belt Ive rolled with at some time or another, And yes they respect my stand up as much (more) than I respect Their mat work, but know this, I've WHOMPED a respectable number of of BJJ black belts, Flat on their backs in Judo tournaments, which I promise you, they wouldn't have been able to stand back up if the throw had occurred in a 7-11 parking lot. Disrespectful. BJJ players love to disrespect judo players until theyre standing across from them on the mat. Know your roots, know where you came from. Respect Judo. Im sick and tired of hearing how you teach the children Judo and then the real stuff - bjj - to adults... And as you prepare to fire back at this rant, remember, I love revere , and respect BJJ... but ne waza is Judo and dont you forget it.

@@moefinesse9878 I totally agree with you and with Michael. Jiu-jitsu IS Judo's ne-waza, but unfortunately Judo rulers have decided to forget the precious ne-waza in order to entertain people in the Olimpics. Fortunately the Gracies saved ne-waza! But what really pisses me off is that they NEVER say they've learned JUDO and Jiu-jitsu is just 50% of the true Judo (like Kosen Judo), they always say they've learned Ju-jutsu, just don't say which Ju-jutsu it was, and it was Kano Ju-jutsu which was later renamed as Judo. I'm a brazilian judoka who's going to begin jiu-jitsu to learn proper ne-waza.

disagree.... striking has the same aspects in fighting (weight distrubution, timing, moment, etc...) striking is actually more complicated because you have to understand distance and weapon being used (kicking distance, punching distance and elbow distance). if it was easier, judo experts like Ronda or jui jitsu experts like Damian Maia would pick up striking up quickly.... and they were terrible.

it does not take longer to learn throws and shorter to learn triangles. in my experience, judo only works on judo. oh it doesnt work if your foot is here, you need to stand like this for it to work- sparring situation my ass. the legit bjj purple belts(any bjj club that starts standing) can hang with most judo black belts on their feet. nevermind the ground game.
