This is a talk video in which I try to explain the roles of mokuroku (catalog), syllabus, and kata in Judo and Jujutsu. It's just a first pass. There is so much more, but we have to start somewhere, right?

I feel that there is a dialectic that happens with a Judoka that moves from the particular to the general and from the general again to the particular. It's like the quotes from musashi:"To know ten thousand things, know one well" and "from one thing, know ten thousand things'. So the perfect Judoka knows all the techniqes but the manifestation of the principles of judo are in his particular tokui waza. Because judo techniques are embodied and some techniqes are more suited for your Idiosyncratic traits than others.

Hey friend I see that Steve hasn’t had the chance to respond so I will try to give a brief explanation on ju no kata and koshiki no kata. So ju no kata is interesting cause it is a form built on fluid attacks and defences found in other kata (hint hint to understand ju no kata study the movements of other kata, especially ones with the sword as ju no kata develops the te gatana, hand sword) to truly do ju no kata the attacks from uke have to have intent but not rigidity (read the key points in Keiko Fukuda’s book it’s great intro). Also one must not force the defences (as ju can be translated as pliability) because one must give way to proceed to the next position. Koshiki no kata on the other hand is a masterclass on kuzushi to my knowledge and the more you understand how each of the kihon in the omote techniques work, the more you’ll be able to piece together judo as a whole, also when you get the omote the ura makes a whole heck of a lot more sense but the omote only begins to make sense if one keeps the ura in mind while studying. Also remember this kata in kito ryu was literally called grappling in armor. To see some of the best forms of how it should look watch Jigoro Kano performing the omote, inoue shoji’s performances and this one video on KZbin entitled Koshiki no kata posted under an account called Kenshiro Abbe. The Abbe video will show how the throws should look more clearly. If there are any other questions or more context needed let me know I’m happy to try and help.
