Riner without any doubt is a phenomenon of a judoka BUT the refereeing in this match was ridiculous.

49:44 Yes I have been hearing them being called Fighters a lot and they are competitors or Athletes. Fighter is a very powerful and inappropriate term, in my point of view. Maybe I am just being overly sensitive although what they do is highly skilled and they are surly all athletes and competitors I tend to reserve the title or term of Fighter to a hole different class of combatants.

There is no other English term associated with people who are competitive in judo. The only term ever associated with them other than fighters is Judoka, which is Japanese for someone who competes in judo. I think if they did call them Judoka it would be fine, too, but it's a preference.
