Get a frisbee. Drill a hole dead centre. Mount it on your drill between bit and chuck. Maybe put a washer on either side of the frisbee. Instant spatter guard.

Regarding what Andy said about Jem and his bad knees, i would be thinking about wearing kneepads on this job with all the kneeling down, i notice other drain unblockers with the same problem knees.
