It's probably really hard for foreigners from cultures that don't use honorifics since we've never had to deal with situations like that before. Though I guess it's like calling someone Mr./Ms./Mrs. versus by their first name in English countries.
@陳查理-c2c2 жыл бұрын
@@zinedinezethro9157 I didn't agree with you originally until I realized nobody would really call me by my first name without a context after I turned 20. Now I get what you guys mean it's an east Asian thing. I do unconsciously use honorifics... And I do unconsciously think someone not in my age cannot be my friend. It's weird figuring this out. Like when I talk to a younger Westerner and he/she doesn't take me seriously, I get secretly offended. And yes if my supervisor call me by my first name, it's ok. If my senpai call me by my first name, it's still ok. If he's younger and a novice, I get offended.

As an Asian, I can safely say that there's a fairly rigid hierarchy in most of our social interaction, especially with total strangers and/or people who are in higher position to self, like parents, older siblings, seniors at work&school, and so on and so forth. To put it simply, we have a respectful culture. That's why our language often has incredibly polite formal speech that's difficult to translate to English. For example, Westerners call even their older siblings with name only, but that's simply not done in Asian culture. All of us call our older siblings respectfully with 'big bro/sis'. Interaction with strangers could be pretty rigid too, and don't be fooled by friendly Asian smiles; that's purely business smile to make us more welcoming lol If you've studied Japanese language, you'd notice there are many words that could mean 'you', because each usage is different, from least formal to rigidly polite; and that's just one example of the intricacies of Asian polite society. I'll admit that millenials of my generation isn't as rigidly polite as our parents' generation could be, but most of us, especially those who were raised in proper middle to upper class families like myself, would still feel weird to be disrespectful even to our peers.
@imsleepdeprived26663 жыл бұрын
@@lacialovescats as an Asian I can approve this. Even with a senior whom I'm really close to, sometimes I still address them with honorifics despite them telling me that it's unecessary since we're friends. It's more of a natural kind of thing, you can't help it since that's what we're used to. But nowadays it's much more laid back in the use of honorifics (at least in my country)
@hayami96463 жыл бұрын
@@lacialovescats as an asian too,i can confirm this lol which is why i was fairly curious when i first heard people in west calling their sibling by their first name lol.It is considered disrespectful in my family to call someone older than me by their name.
@shime_.3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think except from the Philippines. As long as your friends you can just call them by their first names/nicknames regardless of the age gap. In school, first name or last name, there's no seniority among students. We also have like endearments for friends. Sometimes you don't even need names at all, we just call each other any curse words or say "hoy!" to get someone's attention. And there are some who doesn't really like to be addressed with seniority because it's making them somehow feel old. It's a big deal tho if you're not calling your older sisters as Ate / older bros as Kuya and you're not using po/opo when talking to elderlies because that is disrespectful.

@Louisvr20243 жыл бұрын
In Japanese there is something called PITCH ACCENT, every word has a tone which can be HIGH or low. When Enoki Junya pronounces his own complete name, he uses this pattern e-NO-KI-JU-n-ya (beggin from low, then high and ends with low again). In this video when Asami-san pronounces Junya's last name 0:48, she first says e-NO-KI-SA-N (low-HIGH), but suddenly she pronounces his name again 0:51 with a different pattern E-no-ki-sa-n (HIGH-low) and does it a third time 0:52 e-NO-KI-SA-N (low-HIGH) like the first time cause she wasn't sure about the correct pronunciation of Junya's last name. Then Junya says both pronuncations are fine "docchi de mo ii"
