An interesting concept here in Double Or Nothing. We have Gunn as an impetuous teenager does a deal to sell his soul for a truck. I think what the writers were trying to show was when we are really young we can make terrible decisions that can have life long repercussions. Great scene in the casino when the tensions builds and Angel only draws a 3 card, adding to the comedy. Cordy stabbing his hand and Angel cutting his head off was brilliant, only for the gangster to grow another head. Great comedy at the end too, when Angel says 'does anyone else owe this guy' and the whole casino takes revenge. All in all a pretty decent entertaining episode.

I really enjoyed your analysis of Angel's dilemma in this episode. Your insights into his character growth were spot-on! This episode was such an emotional rollercoaster for me. Watching Angel deal with the repercussions of his past was intense!

RE: Wesley's not consulting the group -- On re-watching, I realized that Wesley's discovery of the prophecy happened soon after finding out that Fred and Gunn were a couple and the Groosealugg returning to reunite with Cordy. Wesley was always a bit of a loner, and with most of the other crew members pairing up and Angel acting strangely he must have felt more isolated than ever. Not an excuse but maybe an explanation.

Good insight. Also: "Not an excuse but maybe an explanation" is a sentence/concept the modern world needs to hear more often.

There's been a lot of discussion (for over 20 years) about how the monsters in Buffy the Vampire Slayer were metaphors for the memories and lived experiences of the writers. I wonder whether it's the same for Angel the Series. This episode seems to be a pretty clear metaphor for how gambling addiction can have repercussions throughout time, it "sucks your soul," and can damage relationships, especially when kept secret.

Happy Christmas Eve, Jules! 💜 The little misdirection - with the demon at Angel Investigations to collect a soul … The very welcome return of Cordelia! She has become a very gentle soul, since gaining her demon. And shows she is exactly what the team has needed. If only someone had broken the ”rule” and called her earlier, I feel things would have been different. The bits of humor, with the old married couple, the Groosalugg running the front desk, and Lorne slipping in with the one liner - “I’m not touching that one!”, but, in the background, behind all the humor, quietly packing up Wesley. Fred, in a way which reminds me of Angel making sure Wesley knew it was Angel, not Angelus, lets Wes know that she realizes he was trying to protect Connor and Angel, before taking it out on Wesley and his forsaking of the team, his friends, and by doing so making himself a pariah, and dishonoring his friends. It seems that Gunn has retrogressed in his maturity, a number of levels. Nothing against romance and romantic interludes, but the character portrayals, in this, and Buffy, often (to my mind) go all dangerously twitterpated, and no longer have any regard for their actions, experience, or surroundings. And his immaturity shows with the totally uncalled for scene with Fred, out for their “perfect day”. Nothing against taking the day and getting out, having a great time, with some great food and drink, but man! Meal on top of meal, on top of … and thy barely made it to brunch it seems. And again, as you point out so well, Gunn does exactly what he has just witnessed Wesley doing - going all Lone Ranger, and choosing a cold, distant, and, in Gunn’s case, a really vile attack on Fred, in a junior high moment, where it appears he is literally holding her responsible for the perfection of the day not going right. I know, he was trying to “protect” her, by making her very angry with him, but that approach just highlights the fact that he doesn’t really understand Fred’s personality, mind, and feelings. Fred’s response to Angel - “You and Gunn are dating.” Throwing her arms up in the air - “Not Any More I Guess!!” was both sad and very adorable. Fred just annoyed! 😅 At 10:53, when you say “What game though?” I said - “You won’t believe it!”😜 Bold, but a bit crazy. Still a quick resolution to any problem - no dilly-dallying around. And your Kittens response? Yes! 😉 All of these main characters, with the exception of Wesley, Lorne, and the Groosalugg, benefited by Cordelia returning, they are sought, or responded (in Angel’s case) to her counsel. Gunn’s reveal of his desired prize was, well, fitting I guess. But the end, with Cordelia watching from the doorway, as Angel starts his moving on was a powerful, yet sad moment, reflecting what Cordelia had told him earlier, once her started to respond to her support.🥲 She is a total class act here. 😊 Good episode, mixed with a really bad decision filled center. Like a cream bun with a gone-off center. Your examination of the issues at hand was very comprehensive, although I think it has been more than a couple of days here, since the previous episode - Wesley had his swelling go down, and basically was well enough to be released after his dire injury. But what you say of all this was, I think, well said. Your point about Honesty is very well taken. What gets me most about this one - Wesley, and to a degree Angel, as a proxy for Angelus, have gotten karma-ed, but Gunn comes out smelling like a rose, redeemed, no penalties, copacetic and hunky-dory. His Gee-Whiz apology to Fred is just not right, nor fair. Have a very pleasant, peaceful, and totally relaxed Christmas Eve, and the real thing, on the following day - All the best to you, and, hopefully, that will all be true by the time you read this - as you’ve been off the computer and enjoying some personal time. 🥰 Take Care, Jules, 🤗💜and pass along the same to Juliette! 🤗💜

Caught up at last! You know, there's a lot made in Buffy about Xander, Willow, and Gilles being the heart, soul, and mind of Buffy, but there are times when I feel like something similar can be applied in Angel. The absence of first Cordy and then Wes creates a real sense of "off"-ness, as though a piece of Angel himself is missing when they are.

This is a pretty good follow-up to the intensity of the previous episode. It gives us a pretty interesting and character-driven case-of-the-week story, while also dealing with the aftermath of Wesley's actions. Speaking of Wes, it's impossible not to feel sorry for him. The Gunn's soul casino story is great, but it is rough watching him treat Fred like that. It's a testament to their relationship though that Fred immediately recognises that something is wrong. Merry Christmas Jules and here's to the next one.

Yeah Gunn being mean to her was unnecessary. And him hiding everything from the group is hugely hypocritical especially with what’s going on with Wesley.

2:50 - One thing that bothers me about Wesley's reaction after this is that this scene plainly lays out what Wesley did wrong, even though it wasn't entirely his fault. However, he refuses to take responsibility for his choices, which seems out of character for him. For example, in episodes like "Billy", he is distraught about his actions even though he was under the control of magic at the time.

the whole "be mean to someone and break up to protect them" has been done so many times, the thing that was weird is that it was like 30 seconds after gunn was gushing over her and planning their day. it was a little too fast.

The soul sucking demon did have thugs working for him. I expect at some point someone tried to kill him, his head grew back and he took serious revenge on the would be killer, and nobody else dared. These aren't people used to expecting help from others, and individuals aren't going to risk it.

Gunn said he was 17 when he made the deal with the demon.....but that was 6 years ago? Which makes him 23 in this episode. I think someone on the writing team got their maths wrong here 🤔
