Unicron is, for me, the greatest on-screen villain of all time. From the first moment we see him he's this utterly overwhelming presence and an unstoppable force. He eats an entire planet as his introduction, without a word being spoken, just gobbles it up like a snack and then continues on his merry way. How do you top that? The thing that really sells his power and menace is of course his voice. It's no secret that Orson Welles didn't think much of this role and basically phoned it in, but in a weird way it actually works for this character. Unicron sounds aloof and detached, like everyone he's talking to is beneath him, and he's right! Most other villains of the time were loud and boisterous, yelling and screaming at their enemies and allies alike. Unicron, by contrast, spoke softly, almost gently, and the power of his voice was still like being caught in a hurricane. It really sells just how godlike he is. Add in that amazing musical theme that sounds like the inevitable approach of doom at the beginning, then hits a terrifying crescendo that tells you the end has arrived, and from then on, it's a mix of horror and despair as you watch an entire civilization get wiped out, and you know there is absolutely nothing they can do. Unicron is the total package, menace, charisma, power, presence, and style.

I mean, even when I was watching it as a kid. I liked that they did that, but at the same time I felt doing so was robbing Rodimus as a character. I always felt the better story direction would have been to stay the course. In G1-G2 you see a leader with absolute authority and thousands of years of leadership experience. With Rodimus you had a story of a new leader who wasn't ready stepping into the role, making mistakes and earning the respect of his contemporaries. Earning and bending the lines of loyalty on both sides along the way. All that possibility got squashed by just handing the matrix back. I'll always wonder what could have been in that regard.

What's most fascinating about this movie to me is the first act is essentially the final episode of the Transformers as people knew it at the time. They had their big ultimate battle at Autobot City, both leaders fell, and then.... now what? How do the survivors regroup and move on? Where do they go from here? Some pretty bonkers places, turns out. And it just spirals out of control from there, and I love it.

Optimus Prime was just so beloved by children in the 80s there were complaints from parents after taking their children to see it. The movie was made in the height of 80s greed and goal was "kill all the old toys so we can sell new ones". They did their job a little too well. I saw this when I was 7 with my cousins. My younger cousin burst into tears but to be honest the rest of us were trying not to. All of us have the soundtrack on all of our playlists to this day. I will also mention Transformers were the most popular toys for Christmas for boys and girls (all my cousins are women). We all wanted Transformers for Christmas. Grimlock and Dinobots will forever be my favorites. MVPs of the movie.

Imo, the Movie was the start of the rot that ended up in season 3 , of making the Dinobots comic relief. I also feel they were done a little dirty in the fight against Devastator, as before the Autobots got the likes of the Aerialbots , it was the Dinobots that were the counter to him. That said I loved and still love this movie , I cried buckets at all the deaths. I think seeing Wheeljack's corpse broke me as much as Prime's death. I loved that mad scientist , plus , fun little fact , G1 Wheeljack was one of my first Transformer toys, along with Jazz and Soundwave. Got them from various relatives for my Birthday .

The reason they were caught so off guard is because they were breaking new ground with Transformers(although you have to include G.I.Joe in the story). Toy companies took notice of how huge sales were for Star Wars toys despite the actual toys actually being kind of crappy(characters anyway, not the vehicles). Hasbro was looking to resurrect their G.I. Joe line after a decade gone because of Vietnam anti-war backlash. A chance meeting between a toy company exec and a writer at Marvel comics would start a crazy experiment to get kids to buy as much for characters they liked as for being a cool looking toy. The writer had all these character designs and story ideas for a comic(about Nick Fury, agents of shield fighting the Serpent Society) that got canceled late in the process ready to be reused. He’s the one that convinced Hasbro that they needed more than hero characters, they needed bad guys to fight too…and he so happened to have all these unused character designs ready to offer(so serpent society became Cobra). They still had rules about advertising to kids when they started, so instead of advertising the toys, they ran ads for the comic ABOUT the toys(very expensive ads for promoting a comic book line). The G.I.Joe experiment was looking to be such a success that they were told to do it again with these new Robot toys from Japan they bought the rights to. So Marvel again created characters for all these toys they were shown(Megatron’s D16 name in the latest movie comes from his toy being model 16 from the diacon toy line before Marvel created a character and name for the toy). While Hasbro loved the success creating Characters and stories for the Transformers gave them, they hadn’t yet realized how this might require changes in new toy releases. They thought it was as simple as creating a story reason for why they were retiring some older models in the toy line(that either weren’t that big a seller, or was but had been bought by everyone that wanted one) to make way for new ones. They know now to just have them in the background more or occupied for story reasons instead of outright killed off. The severity was made worse by the fact that the MPAA that rates movies R, PG, or G didn’t consider violence against a robot the same as against a human person(like not showing blood, using robots as cannon fodder was a frequent trick to having bad guys to shoot at without breaking rules for children’s programming). So things that would be R rated brutal if it was done to a human got a pass because robots. But they weren’t mindless machines. To kids, Optimus Prime and Ironhide were as real/loved as Luke Skywalker or Bugs Bunny. I’ve heard it rumored that someone realized just how bad it would be if the movie released with a G rating, so that one single “Oh Shit!” Line was added just to make sure they had a PG rating. Even rated PG, the movie traumatized an entire generation of kids. Imagine if a movie released with Elmer Fudd catching and brutally killing Bugs Bunny. Not just “he’s dead”, but a long scene of Bugs suffering, in pain with trouble speaking until he slips away and his body goes limp while Daffy and Porky start weeping. That’s what it felt like to kids who watched Prime die. I was 11 when it came out, and it was still a gut punch. I can’t imagine if I’d been only 7 or 8(while the Transformers movie didn’t end my childhood innocence, it kinda perfectly represented how my less innocent eyes were beginning to see the world, like the cherry on top of a general “nothing seems as innocent anymore” time of life, where even my kids cartoon was getting serious now). WOW! I hadn’t planned on typing that much, but guess I had more to say than I realized.

No need to apologize for not knowing the characters. Most of those who survived this film were introduced in it, and brand new to fans. Those who did not survive were all characters established in the first two seasons of the TV series. This was seen as a not-so-subtle metaphor for clearing the toy store shelves of old stock to make room for new product.
@visionaryventures12

Some non-spoiler history. The toys came out in 1984. Each box had a tech specs that described the character’s personality and abilities. The first season of the cartoon aired in the same year. There’s a multi-part first episode. Then a short first season. The second season consists of many more episodes because it aired five days per week. Then came this movie. After the movie in the summer came a third season. The fourth season was simply a mini-series of about three episodes. There was a separate comic book series, which didn’t relate at all to the storyline of the cartoon, aside from the characters and the basic premise.

Was not expecting this reaction but as a transformers fan I always appreciate people seeing it! Believe it or not, the reason Hot Rod is a good leader is summed up by the silly song that plays when the Junkyard bots attack. He approaches a hostile enemy group, after already trying to peacefully approach another group on the Quintesson planet and being captured and put to death, but he still puts aside the smart tactical thing to do by extending them an olive branch instead of opening fire like Kup was ready to do. He puts tactics aside to do the right thing. As Weird Al sung while they danced in celebration of their friendship, he Dared to be Stupid. That's why Ultra Magnus failed as a leader, he was an effective soldier and tactician, but lacked the heart to make a dumb choice for the right reason.

Okay so a couple fun fact, first - Arcee is the first female transformer ever successfully created, though others appeared in the show before her after Hasbro was convinced. Additionally the Autobot medic Ratchet, one of the casualties from the opening act (which was allowed to happen because all the dead characters had been removed from toy shelves) was originally conceived as a female character. second - in early drafts of the script, the people of Planet Lithone from the opening were originally meant to be Transformers made of stone, and the sole survivor (until the Quintessons found him at least) was named Granix, until they changed his name to Kranix in the rewrite. third, and the one I think you'll find most interesting - Rodimus Prime has a mutual acquaintance with The Doctor, see during the 80s there was a Transformers Comic published by Marvel and in the UK version of the comic they did a follow up story in which Unicron's head landed on the Planet of Junk and enslaved the Junkions to build him a new body, Rodimus stopped him with the help of Freelance Peacekeeping Agent, Death's Head. When Unicron's body started to collapse, Death's Head was saved by the Doctor in his TARDIS and was dropped off at the Baxter Building, home of the Fantastic Four on Earth-616 of Marvel Comics, where he resides to this day.

This movie sort of changed my life as a kid. When it was released at the theater, the show was airing on weekday afternoons. This would be my first animated feature film based on a TV show that I was actually watching (with older relatives since I was really little), I got to see in the theater but also having mani characters from that show being killed off, almost right at the beginning including the main protagonist. That blew my mind as a kid and it would change how I viewed animated movies. This movie single handedly took me down the path of more mature, less kid friendly animation of the 70's, 80's, 90's and, 2000's up to nowadays. Also I heard that Orson Wells was blitzed off his ass when he recorded the voice of Unicron for this movie and that's the funniest thing in the world to me because what we got was a genuinely sinister and memorable vocal performance for the main villain

Hasbro initially saw the show as just a way to sell toys, and so to 'clear the field' for their new toys, they had this film made to explain why they weren't selling any more Optimus Primes or Ironhides or Ratchets, they killed them off, not understanding just how attached kids had gotten to these characters. They were absolutely bombarded with angry letters from parents having to console their traumatized children who'd just watched one of their heroes die in what was presumably a fun kids' movie. This led to Optimus' resurrection later in the next season of the show. I was 6 years old when this came out and I watched it in the theater, I bawled when Optimus was killed.

Eric Idle is from Monty Python, it was quite a surprise to recognise his voice back then. This movie killed a surprising amount of the generation one transformers. I always liked Soundwave, but they never made an actual cassette player out of him, for some reason... might be the lack of speakers. Maybe those people making the fancy talking animated toys (Robeson) should do that.

Most of the well known Transformers are first generation Transformers, which they used in the more recent live action Transformers movies. This movie acted as a refresh to bring in a bunch of new characters they could make toys of(cartoons in the 80’s were effectively half hour commercials for the toys). Killing off a bunch og Gen 1 Transformers, particularly Optimus Prime did not go over well with kids though. Legitimately was traumatizing for those of us that were in the sweet spot for who Transformers was aimed at(I was 8 when this movie came out).

Not gonna pretend this movie is like, great cinema or anything, but context is appropriate here. In the mid 80s, calling something like this a "kid's movie" was unprecedented. Things like killing off major characters just never happened. No one (including myself) had seen anything like it before. While it only happened because in the eyes of the censors, robots don't count as people, the movie will always have a memorable place for me because of the impact it had on me as a kid, and for being one of the first things I watched that expanded my view of what "dramatic storytelling" could be. No one's going to seriously compare it to Schindler's List or The Godfather or any of the other greatest drama films of all time, but the impact it had on my generation when it was released was pretty similar.

Transformers is my absolute favorite cartoon since back in the day when it was still on the air. Honestly, the movie is canon with the cartoon show. The show lasted for four seasons, but there was a huge gap, if you will, between seasons 2 and 3. The movie bridges the gap. Watching the first two seasons would've made the movie more impact full, because watching a lot of known characters from the show die was a blow in my childhood; especially when watching Optimus Prime die, that was a very massive blow.

10:24 - A lot of people miss this but Hot Rod is the one that catches the Matrix and I think at that point it imprints itself onto him. I think Hot Rod is the only character that gets a full character arch. He starts out as this mischievous Autobot, then after the fall of the city, while on the ship and Cup is telling stories, he's more focused on what to do next. He shows leadership on the Planet of Junk. The music in this movie is spot on. Unicron's theme is soooooo menacing. At the start of the movie everyone is happy then music changes and this giant planet killer comes out of no where. Favorite song in this movie is "The Touch" by Stan Bush. It plays during the Optimus fight scene and the final fight scene between Hot Rod and Galvatron.

Hope this gets the reaction it deserves and maybe, just maybe, an 80s Days for some of the classic toons of our youth. As to Transformers, the three part opener for the series More Than Meets The Eye, SOS Dinobots, it’s follow up War of the Dinobots, Fire in the Sky, two parter Dinobot Island, two parter Desertion of the Dinobots , The Golden Lagoon, The Secret of Omega Supreme, The Search for Alpha Trion, the two parter The Key to Vector Sigma, the five part sequel to the movie Five Faces of Darkness and two part Return of Optimus Prime are highlights. I went Dinobot heavy since you dig them, but there ya go! Thanks a lot for the memories!

The original 86 movie was one big toy commercial it signified the end of an era and the birth of a new one. Transformers started in 1984 alongside an accompanying comic from Marvel and a cartoon by Sunbow/Toie international. Season 1 introduced the toys released that year and season 2 released in 1985 added to the roster with the 85 cast members. These first two years of toys were actually re issues of a number of Japanese toys primarily from Takara’s Microman and Diaclone toy lines. Come 1986 Hasbro and Takara jointly worked on a new range of toys and phased out the 1984 line up. To celebrate the partnership Hasbro commissioned the 86 movie alongside a third season of the cartoon to follow it. Japan didn’t pick up the movie till a few years later so commissioned a one off episode called Scramble City to introduce the new characters they had designed, the movie featured the Hasbro designed characters. You are also right that kids went ballistic in 86 learning there beloved Optimus had died so he was resurrected in season 3, the main oversight by Hasbro was that the Ultra Magnus toy was actually an all white recolour of Optimus Prime with the car transporter trailer converting into a suit of armour making him the Ultra Magnus we see on screen so Hasbro didn’t understand what the fuss was about. In terms of the toys a new Optimus was released in 1988 called Powermaster Optimus Prime where the cab combined with the trailer to make a beefier Optimus but the cartoon finished with a 3 episode finale in 1987 so Prime never got an upgrade, however as the comic didn’t follow the cartoon, Prime died much earlier in the timeline and did become a Powermaster later on, as the characters of Galvatron, Cyclonus & Scourge and technically Rodimus Prime didn’t exist until the events in the 86 movie, in order to appear in the comic which firmly continued the story in present day they developed time travel stories to introduce them which blew up the entire continuity confirming the comic and cartoon were seperate entities. Now in Japan Transformers were still popular and while they got season 3 after Scramble City they ignored Season 4 and did their own set of three seasons from 1987-1989. Headmasters in 87 which mirrored the new toy releases that year, Super God Masterforce in 1988 which while most of the toys that year were released in both Hasbro and Takara markets, Takaras were different colours and were different characters. The west only had the comic at this point to support the new toys coming out. Now in the Godmasters show there was a human character named Ginrai who was a truck driver and given a set of bracelets with the power of the Masterforce, similar in concept to Power Rangers by clinking the bracelets together he donned a suit of armour a bit like Spike/Daniels exosuit and he piloted a lifeless Transformer body which in this case looked remarkably like Optimus Prime, in Japan the Powermaster Optimus Prime was known as Super Ginrai with Ginrai being a small figure who converts into an engine and unlocks the toy’s transformation, there was also a secondary trailer called God Bomber who could split apart and become additional armour for Ginrai now called God Ginrai in later years Hasbro rereleased this entire set as Powermaster Optimus Prime with Apex Armour in the early 2000’s. Following Masterforce was Victory in 1989 with the toys exclusive to the Japanese market, the US and Europe did their own thing with the US finishing in 1990 but UK/Europe limped on till 1992. This year saw Hasbro/Takara rebrand Transformers as Generation 2 with fans rebranding everything prior as Generation 1 or G1. G2 was a continuation of the toy line featuring rereleases of old characters in new colours with new gimmicks. Prime got a rerelease of his original toy in a new darker colour scheme while Megatron got a completely new toy as a tank, new toy laws meant he couldn’t be a gun any longer at least not a real one. Both Prime and Megs got a couple of new toys over the next couple of years with a Marvel G2 comic to support in the west and the G1 cartoon got a new intro sequence and advert bumpers repackaged as G2. In 1996 Hasbro decided to revitalise the brand completely by handing it over to subsidiary Kenner and developing Beastwars as the next incarnation of Transformers. This time featuring Optimus Primal and Megatron where characters in season 1 all convert into biological animals, insects or dinosaurs. At this point Japan finally aired the 86 movie, ten yrs later 😅 they also got season 1 of Beastwars but as season 2 was too short for them they created a new show called Beastwars II which utilised all of the Beastwars toys which weren’t in the season 1 cartoon (the show was all CGI so limited the number of characters rendered due to cost) Beastwars II also re purposed some G1 and G2 toys in the line up as well as creating 2 new leaders in the form of Lio Convoy and Galvatron, following this the next year they produced Beastwars Neo featuring more animals, cyborg animals and Dinosaurs with new leaders Big Convoy and Magmatron. In parallel we got seasons 2 and 3 of Beastwars followed by Beast Machines 1989, this year Japan got seasons 2 & 3 of Beastwars as Beastwars Metals as well as Beast Machines although this wasn’t as popular. Straight after Japan developed Car Robots in 2000 which just like Beastwars II mixed Beast characters with classic vehicular transformers with the majority of toys being once again re issues of G1, G2 and Beastwars toys with the exception of Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, Megatron and the majority of the Autobots being all new toys. Hasbro imported Car Robots in 2001 as Transformers RID, 2003 - 2005 saw Hasbro’s new trilogy The Unicron Trilogy (Armada, Energon & Cybertron) followed in 2006 by Transformers Animated, 2007 got us the first live action movie from Michael Bay seeing voice actor Peter Cullen return as the voice of Optimus Prime from the original G1 cartoons/86 movie. Meanwhile the cartoon was rebooted again in 2010 as Transformers Prime which Hasbro attempted to tie together this cartoon with a number of video games and the live action movies, the Rescuebots pre school cartoon and the comics being produced by the license holders at the time IDW Publishing into one huge continuity narrative called the Aligned Continuity, this resulted in a major rewrite of Transformers lore in the form of a book called the Covenant of Primus. We had 2 new live action movies from Bay: Revenge of the Fallen & Dark of the moon and a new cartoon continuing on from Transformers Prime also called Transformers RID 2015 (Not to be confused with RID 2001) Back in 2001 The toys had simply mirrored or provided the basis for the cartoons of any given year however in 2001 Hasbro/Takara developed a number of new toy lines without any supporting media to cater for older kids and adult collectors alike producing new modern engineered toys of classic G1 characters and so Classics was born known as Henkel in Japan, this was renamed Universe in 2006 and finally to Generations in 2010 fans colloquially call any toy under the Generations banner as CHUG ( an acronym of the first letter of all the names the line has been known as). We also got our 4th and 5th live action movies Age of extinction and The last knight, we also got a new web based cartoon for one of the CHUG lines known as The Prime Wars trilogy and Netflix developed a cartoon for the War for Cybertron trilogy also part of the CHUG toy line. Following RID 2015 came Cyberverse cartoon alongside the Bumblebee Movie in 2018, we then got the Earthspark cartoon 2021 alongside the Rise of the beasts live action movies Age which re imagines and mixes classic G1 and Beastwars characters a theme paralleled in the CHUG lines since 2018. And of course we finally had the new animated Transformers One movie a few months ago celebrating the 40th anniversary of Transformers

I loved your reaction. As others have said, Optimus's death was pretty traumatic as kid. My father even was stunned in theater with me when he saw it. Hasbro even admitted after the fact they didn't realize how many children attached and loved Optimus, because as a character Optimus taught us how to be a good leader and person. He was compassionate, strong, but gentle. As Peter Cullen said, Optimus is framed after what his brother a veteran said..."Don't be the Hollywood hero, be strong enough to be gentle." Also, this was the first time we got to see the female transformers. Most are Autobots but there are Decepticon female transformers too. The story is pretty deep too....the message "Till All are One" is that transformers were never meant to fight themselves (a good lesson for humans), but the bigger threats...aka Unicron and Quintisons. Primus (aka Cybertron) is where the matrix of leadership comes from. :)

The planet at the start being eaten by Unicron is called Lithone, a world inhabited by more sentient robots created by the Quintessons (that creepy tentacled "INNOCENT" guy), the Lithonians were chemists and made all kinds of medicines and such. "Kup" is called this because he's a picKUP truck :P Blitzwing and Astrotrain were two of the first "Triple Changers", each having TWO vehicle formats in addition to their robot mode; Blitzwing had tank and jet (almost looks like an F-4) modes, and Astrotrain had space shuttle and locomotive modes. Springer was the first Autobot triple changer, having helicopter and futuristic car modes, and he later becomes leader of the Wreckers along with the other Autobot triple changers, Broadside and Sandstorm. Blaster (obviously a ghetto blaster) was created as the Autobots' answer to Soundwave, who had several Mini-Cassette bots: Rumble, Frenzy, Ravage, Ratbat, Laserbeak, and Buzzsaw are the ones we see in the G1 cartoon. Blaster's Mini-cons are Eject, Rewind, Ramhorn and Steeljaw. Both get many more later on as the series progresses. Devastator was the first of the Combiners, a group of transformers who can merge into a much larger robot with a unique personality as sort of a gestalt of its component bots. Before the war, the Constructicons had helped Omega Supreme build the Crystal City, one of the most beautiful creations on Cybertron, which Omega had sworn to protect. After Megatron's power play, the Constructicons merged into Devastator, tragically losing their intellect to turn into a mindless destructive brute, and destroyed the Crystal City while Omega had been drawn away, returning to find it shattered into a million pieces, and so Omega Supreme swore an oath of vengeance upon Devastator, and relishes the opportunity to battle him whenever he can. That was Sunstreaker in the shuttle with Optimus, who along with his twin Sideswipe, transforms into a Lamorghini Countach (imo one of the coolest performance cars of the 80's)

32:49 just to you know the live action movies are not the same continuity as the cartoon. Spoilers for the cartoon or G1 continuity that The Transformers: The Movie takes place in. For context when starting the film, there was a series of 2 seasons (series for those in the UK) that took place in the years of 1984 and 1985 and almost entirely on earth except for a few times when they returned to Cybertron but those that when always returned to Earth by the end of the episode (the movie and subsequent seasons/series took place after the movie which was in 2005). The dearies ended with the fourh season which had three episodes called 'The Rebirth' parts 1-3. In season 3 Optimus returns to "life" twice. The first as zombie-ish meant to destroy the transformers because of an angry human scientist. In the episodes 'The Return of Optimus Prime' a hate plague spreads across the galaxy where anyone infected becomes hateful and attacks anyone and spread the plague further. A few remaining Autobots revive Optimus Prime to find a way to end the hate plague.

Good video! I loved Transformers as a kid, especially the toys. I was never too crazy about this movie (especially as Prime was hardly in it) but like all the cartoons, it's a fun watch. One 1986 film I do recommend if you haven't seen it is "Flight Of The Navigator". A sci-fi film, kind of for kids, but quite mature too, the first half is VERY mysterious which I love. Gave me chills when I saw it in the cinema. DO NOT watch the trailer as it spoils the entire film! Another gem from 1986 is The Three Amigos! Comedy classic 🙂 Oh and glad you love the Dinobots. The toys were so awesome! With metallic and gold parts. But the best ever toy was Soundwave - you could actually put the little cassettes inside him. Years later they made a larger deluxe version called "Masterpiece Soundwave", just an incredible toy! 🙂

Optimus Prime and all the other robots on both sides that died was intentional. This was a way to phase out those toys (which was already a couple years old by this time), and introduce new ones with the movie. But Hasbro really miscalculated how much kids were attached to Optimus Prime and many were traumatized at the time. I do remember seeing it in theatres at the time, but I only remember it being very quiet during the scene of Prime's death. There were cheers when Starscream died though.

Jules, 💜 I’ve been wondering when this would appear, or, at least, presumed this would be the one appearing, after you hinted at a 1986 animated film reaction. 😉 I have never seen this one, although I do remember the wildly ranging cast of voice actors in this one. Some completely out of keeping with their normal roles, and familiar voice actors from the world of television cartoons, including both Shaggy and Scooby-Doo, and one of the Monty Python crew. Some staid individuals, like Orson Welles, and Robert Stack (although both also known to be humorous) Just a wide range of talented folks. My only direct experience with Transformers has been mostly with the live action movies of the 2000s, so I was just about right with you, so far as characters, story, etc. This movie was a lot of fun - good 80’s action/animation, funny bits, and great voicing! 😂 Which leads me to a Thank You! It should be noted that Spike and Daniel's last name is Witwicky. Spike is the original G1 version of Shia LaBeauf's Sam, hence why he's paired with Bumblebee. He marries a girl named Carly like Sam's girlfriend in Dark of the Moon, so Daniel is what Sam's son would've been. G1 Season 1 starts in 1984, so after season 2 comes The Movie which skips forward twenty years. It should be noted that Spike worked with his father on an oil rig before he had his driver's license so he's infinitely more together than Sam.

Also....The universal greeting "Bah Weep Granah Weep Nini Bong" is understood by most creatures in the galaxy. It can be roughly translated to "Hello, we mean you no harm," or "We come in peace," or "Do you hate dirtwad Decepticons as much as we do?"

3:29 I always thought as a kid that Megatron’s transformation was not what a leader should transform into. He has to be dependent on someone to hold him so he can fire. When he becomes Galvatron his transformation makes more sense for a leader being a cannon that doesn’t need someone to help them. 10:36 ruined a lot of kids lives killing Optimus Prime. Hasbro killed him so they could make way for newer and more expensive toys. They didn’t expect to get the backlash they got so they had to work on fixing their major error. 13:42 the crown was something that Starscream had created for himself. It had nothing to do with their leadership just ego. 16:04 season 1 episode 7 of the 1984 series is the creation of the Dinobots. 26:55 yeah if it wasn’t for corporate greed then they could’ve probably repaired Optimus. 28:50 Unicron wants it to destroy it cause he knows it’s the only thing that can destroy him. 30:59 they alluded to him being worthy of the Matrix when Optimus dropped it while handing it to Ultra Magnus. The Matrix glowed when he touched it. 32:47 this movie is tied into the 1984 tv series and they did a final season after the backlash for killing Prime. This movie and the 84 tv series is separate from all other Transformer properties so who survives and who dies doesn’t carry into other series.

Ah, the film that devastated hundreds of childhoods in the 80's in one fell swoop, murdering beloved characters left right and centre lmao Still love it, it's super cheesey and heartfelt

I did not expect to see you react to this movie but I am SO glad you did. Also, to give some context The Transformers The Movie (1986) came about between Season 2 and Season 3 of the original Transformers cartoon from 1984. THATS why you're missing so much information, because a lot of these characters were introduced in the first two seasons of the show.

To answer your question, Season 3 had a multiple episode where Optimus Prime was built again by the Quinticons (the five faced robots "guilty or innocent') and Rodimus Prime was turned back to Hot Rod. Later, in the Japanese version, Optimus Prime sacrificed himself again and Rodimus was reborn.

You Decepticon lover! 😂 I was 12 and in 6th grade. I remember going with two of my best friends to see this. We were devastated. So many other people have posted the history so I won't get into that. But when I saw you were reacting to this, I thought it was a big mistake because I was sure you hadn't seen the show. But you really made it work. I doubt any other reaction channel ever tackles this, which puts you in a space alone!

There are actually five Dinobots. Their fifth member, a stegosaurus named Snarl, is largely absent from the movie for some reason.

31:59 and his head continued to orbit cybertron in the subsequent cartoon series. There was an episode where unicron bargained with the ghost of Starscream where they were to do particular things for one another so they could each acquire a "new" body. It really showcased the dubious nature they each had, so definitely worth a watch.

What's really great is that Starscream isn't really dead. Each Transformer has a spark (which is basically their soul) and Starscream's (via some weird happenstance) spark is immortal.

If you had watched the first 2 seasons of the TV series, you would have been a lot more shocked at seeing so many familiar robots being annihilated. I was a bit late in seeing the movie, I was a bit too young to take myself to the theater at the time, and started watching season 3 without it, which is set after the movie.

OMGGGG I never expected this I love Transformers YASSSSSSSSSSSS. This isn't really the beginning, it came after season 2. Kup is a picKUP truck. For the rest of the series, Unicron's head orbits Cybertron. Optimus gets rebuilt in season 3. Hasbro didn't realized kids had an attachment to the characters, that's why they killed a bunch off whose toys were discontinued. Junkion is the name for the transforming bikes they met. Wreck-Gar is their leader. The voice actor for him is from Money Python.
