Eno said this: "Julia Holter I was listening to again the other day… just fantastic. There was nobody as good as her when I was making music back in the day. If Julia Holter had existed in the 1970s she would be a goddess, it’s just because she’s doing it now and that there are a lot of people doing things that it sort of dilutes it a little bit"

: So I went a little nuts and bought her entire Domino discography on wax - I'm especially excited to hear Aviary in full, precisely because of how insane the engineering is. It's the sort of adventurous peak I don't think will ever come again, so I intend to savor the depth of the vinyl version as best I can. Plus I get to annoy my neighbors with the first movement to "Everyday Is An Emergency" - that'll be fun -

This is a good album, and at times, it's great, transcendent even. But it is not without flaws, something its creators would likely readily admit. It is the kind of album that *really* wants you to acknowledge how good it is, sometimes to the distraction of the actual content on display. It has "MASTERPIECE" scribbled all over it. It suggests an awful lot without saying much lyrically (should it really be up to the listener to interpret nearly every line of a ninety-minute piece??). And it's bloated, whether her adoring fans would care to accept that or not. The heaps of gushing praise it has received do not exactly do it any favors, either (it's okay to appreciate the scope and scale of something while still realizing its limitations). As a listening experience and a body of recorded work, its certainly unparalleled in 2018, but not the best release of the year. If this were a film I think it would be carefully considered a noble failure, but for reasons not necessarily unfair, there is less expectation when it comes to music, so albums like this do not appear very often and become adored simply for just existing. I do believe there is a legitimate masterwork within her grasp and I don't doubt her ability to create one. I just don't think this is the one.
