Crushing is one of the greatest albums of the decade. The lyrics are chillingly beautiful and raw. It’s such a personal record that I feel like many artists wouldn’t dare to release and bare their soul like she has. Maybe it was just that this record came out and reached my ears at the perfect time and place but I have an incredibly personal connection with these songs. Julia and her band are a gift to the world. 💚🧡

And then for her to release a song about our beautiful city a few months ago - man Julia is special. Now I am going through a breakup with my partner of 6 years - this album has been a beacon of hope and understanding - music is so special

We have also burdened the world with Dance Monkey - the worst song of the year by far and potentially the decade. The Australian music scene is so commercial that all of our good artists generally have to leave to get the recognition they deserve. If you look at our most recent industry awards night and have and listen to the artists that we recognise as our best you'd be pretty disappointed. These same awards use to honor great Australian music like The Cruel Sea and The Avalanches for example - now they just plug commercial garbage. It would be so good to have a radio station of KEXP's quality down here but unfortunately Australian ears are weak. Our major alternative station plays a plethora of shit Australian music over quality international music because it is Australian made - that is our mentality - homegrown before actual quality. It is infuriating.

Julia Jacklin was as immaculate as ever, but can we take a moment for both of those rips by the lead guitarist during “I don’t know how to keep loving you”...I mean he completely matched the emotion of her lyrics and voice, it turned that song from one of the best in her discog into one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.

Julia Jacklin's lyrics are so powerful and raw. As soon as her first singles dropped for Crushing I knew this one was gonna hit me hard and draw out some emotions I wasn't aware would affect me so much. I actually met my current girlfriend at my first Julia Jacklin concert. So many of her songs resonated with both of us for our own separate reasons and it was crazy how many factors had to come into play for us to even meet each other let alone be standing next to each other on the floor. To add some weirdness factor to that our names are Julian and Julie... crazy.

Cheryl's very last remark "i love how you look at heartbreak at a slightly different angle than we're used to hearing" is SO clever, so relevant. Most heartbreak songs I've known of were written by the ones who were left. Don't get me wrong: I never left, I was left. It hurt so so badly. I went through so much. And sure, songs written by people who were left helped me organise my experience and pull through. However, Julia's music gave me another story. I gained a lot of sympathy for their part too. god, how it hurts! And though I still feel gutted when I think of the end, and am unwavering in believing there were so many other steps that could§ve been taken, I'm slowly becoming ready to decide to actively leave someone who won't really see me the way I need to. I guess I'm getting from her music the closure I never really had, and for that I am so, so grateful. will try and love again soon! :)
