i unsubscribed from all of the BIG beauty channels when the name 'Morphe' passed their lips more times than oxygen did. i also didn't want some 18 year old with more bad attitude than manners telling me in the comments that if i can't make Morphe shadows work then I can't do makeup.....erm I'm 34 and have been doing my makeup longer than most of those beauty gurus have been alive- it just seemed like a needlessly toxic and bitchy environment and i wanted no part of it- I'm too old for that shit ;)

Just a small note from inside the advertising world: sending out less expensive PR packages would not reduce the price of the product at all. Every product created has a marketing budget built around it that is totally separate from the costs estimated for production, storage, and shipping. Often marketing is done by a third-party company in collaboration rather than “in-house” of the company itself, or its a blend of work done by both in-house and a hired firm. Having an influencer open a package on camera- luxe or not- saves the company a bit of marketing budget while still having a ton of eyes on the product. That’s the main reason for the big flashy boxes. What could effectively change the marketing approach would be the change of conversation with the viewership, which is slowly happening. If we (influencers, viewers) ooh-and-ahh over the levels of sustainability utilized in PR packaging rather than the glitz of a tv screen planted in a box lid, I think more brands would adjust their approaches to packaging design for the sake of staying relevant.

Again, as you said, the beauty community represents only a small part of people who buy make up: I think that by only releasing products dedicated to the beauty community, many brands will not last that long, because at the end of the day, what keep the cosmetic industry afloat are the “normal” people who do their make up to go to school, job and university. In my opinion, for example, an ABH run by Norvina will meet this fate pretty soon. Here in Europe (and I think in Asia and the Middle East as well) the cosmetic industry is doing just fine, the beauty community is medium-large, but not saturated and mainly caters to people of the same nationality of the youtuber: for example Italian beauty youtubers are quite a lot, but of course due to the language, you do not know them, when some of them have been on the platform for way longer than people like Jaclyn Hill, Kathleen Lights or Jeffree Star, just to mention some. Also, we don’t have over the top and constant make up launches. With that being said, loveeeeee this video format, it’s so refreshing to see topics discussed in such an intelligent and academic way! Way to go dewy queen!

Like a lot of people here, I’ve been watching beauty KZbin for a very long time (I’m talking 2009-11). When I think of old KZbin I think of girls like Fleur and Ingrid and Zoe sitting in front of their beds telling me how much they love Mac eyeshadow and Essie nail polish. By 2015-16, beauty KZbin had already gone through such a massive change in culture. It’s funny to me thinking of that era as old.
@lamb82644 жыл бұрын
"I miss the old youtube" statement really means "I miss the non-monetized youtube". Point blank. It all boils down to money and all the problems and drama (both directly and indirectly) associated to it. You see it reflected in who the current biggest beauty influencers are. Those are the faces (and personal brands) representing all of the beauty community to the rest of the world. And that's sad.
@tjsing954 жыл бұрын
I’m 22 years old and I’ve watched KZbin and the beauty community since 2012. A LOT has changed in the past 8 years. My approach to it has always been as a place of a viewer/observer. The drama can be entertaining but for me it’s always just been about the makeup. I could never afford expensive makeup/having a lot of it, so maybe in that regard I’ve always been lucky. I could never get caught up financially in it because I didn’t have the means to have these items, so my perspective has always been from the eyes of a low income individual. In my teen years, I LUSTED after having a large, expensive collection of big influencers. But in 2016, I started to become disillusioned with it all, especially with all of the releases and the drama. In conclusion, the beauty community can be toxic, but KZbin has became toxic when corporations became involved. But do I still watch it? Yeah I do. Because I love makeup.

I am 45 years old and I've worn makeup since I was 11. Over the past few years, I got more into makeup and turned to KZbin for inspiration, for help learning new techniques. I find it really relaxing and uplifting to watch makeup tutorials and some of the videos are super funny, too. The drama that I soon learned about and got sucked into watching on a few occasions made me absolutely sick and disgusted. For a grown woman to broadcast her bizarre relationship with a teenage, immature young man and then slam his character (not that his character is that great).. was just way too much for me. And that is just one example of WAY too many. I refuse to subscribe to anyone who does that kind of ridiculousness. You, Julia, are a doll and so refreshing. I adore you!!

The influencers that are only here for the money are what ruined the beauty community. I feel like the actual reason is us, the audience. If it wasn't for our money, our consumerism and naiveness, brands wouldn't be able to sell so much essentially unnecessary things. We also don't hold accountable influencers when they do smth bad. The only reason Jeffree Star is still here is because he still gets millions of views and thousands of sales. Jacklyn Hill's palettes are still being sold. Norvina make up line is still successful. If those things weren't profitable, they wouldn't exist. And we are basically the ones who make it profitable, we are literally voting with our money. And brands and influencers are just trying to adjust to us.

THIS. Well said. Another thing is that when Tati accused a person of being a sexual predator because he said nice things about her competitors the only reason that the "mainstream" media got involved was because of the drunken orgy of masses of people reveling in the destruction of a 19 year old. People LOVED it. THAT is what made the media notice. It was the activity of the SUBSCRIBERS.
@kartmo4 жыл бұрын
@@Thiggman-cs6wx , I agree with you, but I believe Tati never said James was a sexual predator. She was really petty and mentioned that he was inappropriate, and then it just skyrocketed. only tangentially related but i have a theory that when brands send their full foundation range in PR it’s a vestige of the “old” beauty community - at the beginning of beauty youtube, the vast majority of popular creators were working makeup artists & brands wanted to send every shade so the recipient could use them in their kit

And the fact that he was claiming it was helping his anxiety didn't set right with me either. Weren't they just melatonin gummies to help you sleep? It's a bit dangerous to be promoting "sleep vitamins" as an anxiety reducer. Also he told Tati he didn't want to promote her vitamins because of his morals or whatever but then turned around and sold out his morals for some Coachella VIP tickets. I understand why Tati was upset but how she went about it was just so immature.
@SammyP0384 жыл бұрын
Squid Although I agree with not promoting these vitamins as anxiety aids, they very well could of been helping Jame’s own anxiety. His could’ve partially stemmed from lack of sleep so taking something with melatonin could’ve made him less anxious. If the company also told him it helps with anxiety the pills themselves could’ve had a placebo affect, therefore making him think it was the pills helping him.

Thoughts about viewers preference for negative videos: I’ve heard a lot of folx say that people tend to be negative so they gravitate toward that kind of content, feeding the drama machine. But I think it’s more complex than that. Bigger/OG creators came to a point where they realized the power of parasocial relationships and capitalized off of them to sell things. The whole “my viewers are my family” trope that has become so common in recent years morphed into a huge money-making strategy. (I don’t think every creator intentionally manipulated audiences this way, but it nonetheless had that effect.) the entire cosmetic industry was able to grow billions of dollars off of it. That’s an incredible power. And by the time viewers realized that they essentially were being emotionally manipulated by advertisers, there was no going back, and the other side of parasocial relationships were seen: the backlash. Viciously attacking a creator for a perceived wrong might be easy when you feel they’ve manipulated their audience. You get more invested in drama when you feel you’ve been personally wronged. It’s easier to believe negative stories, negative opinions, etc because they feel more authentic, less like and advertisement. They feel more credible. I don’t think the negativity is just people being ugly; I think at least in part, it’s a backlash against the hyper capitalism in the beauty community.

A common thread that I picked up on in all of your points is money. People easily forget that brands 👏🏻 aren’t 👏🏻 your 👏🏻 friends 👏🏻. Brands exist to make money and nothing more. Influencers aren’t your friends either. Also, there are zero qualifications to be an influencer, so the person “reviewing” the product may be totally misinformed, passing on improper techniques or not know what they’re talking about. Consumerism is running rampant and everyone is taking full advantage. Last thing- you can “support” an influencer without spending a dime, no matter what they tell you. You don’t need to buy merch, collabs, books, etc. to show loyalty. Watching their free content is more than enough.

In the beginning still and this is my comment about the ABH situation they did a lot in 2019 but no one has pointed at Melt lately. They’re on their 4th Palette release this year, the pink one, the rust one, the second weed one and now the purple party one. It’s only June, why is no one calling Melt out for cheapening their brand? Multiple of their palettes have very similar color stories and no ones mad at Melt for releasing sameish palettes and 4 palettes in 6 months...
@ana135944 жыл бұрын
I think they're doing it because if a brand is selling inside Sephora they need to release something every 3 to 4 months. (One example is KVD, they're rebranding but still launching products.) I think too that Melt has put out a lot of new releases lately. However, imo I think the products are pricy but have a sustainable packaging compared to a lot of other brands. The majory of the packing is cardboard (from palettes, outter packaging, etc.), glass and they use way less plastic.

It was not the sugar bears : that served as a pretext to detonate a crisis, which was based on the combat between the egos of the two largest “beauty” channels of YT. No one here is innocent, James Charles must be excruciating in person, but I would not "expose" one of my high school students. By points, in successive order: 1) Tati is not the most emotionally stable person that exists, I do not judge her, but she allowed herself to be manipulated by a more (emotionally) intelligent person than herself. 2) James Charles plays for other leagues, he is an influencer but he is not an entrepreneur. Neither Tati's audience nor JF's have the same traits. 3) Shane is a calculating and manipulative guy. Many of the aspects of SD are not isolated anxiety problems. 4) JF is an as**hole, to be a villain and have no scruples, and thus have a very wide fan base, you need to be smart. His now non-friends know it, Manny and LL tried to jump him and almost screwed up their lives. The difference is that the three of them shared those types of followers. From the first Dramaggedon, both LL and Manny changed the content of their channels, they no longer clickbait as much and are selected with more docile personalities. James Charles reached out to fans on other platforms (like TikTok) and stood up again. Tati learned the bad way, she just wanted to give herself a space to attend her intimate life goals. Let’s always remember this: You can’t insolate your personal life from the job environment, but you can wisely choose who you take into your personal circle. As so, the highlights you want to present of yourself in your public persona.

I sincerely hope you continue to be a mouthpiece for your generation because you are phenomenal. xo &also I finally hit that 🛎 ! 💜

You're really right! I don't think it's possible to blame one side for an argument that's been carried on by BOTH sides for ages, and that's why I completely agree with your "disappointing" answer.

An observation I’ve had about my own viewing habit in the last two-ish years is a lack of interest in tutorials. Partially this is due to the fact that I find drama so interesting, but it’s also because tutorials have become boring. I have been doing makeup for years, and watching beauty KZbin since the Michelle Phan days. I used to be fascinated by tutorials and watched them thinking “wow how could they do that.” Now not only do I know how they did it, but I can do it too. Why watch a tutorial that doesn’t show me anything new? I might watch for an extremely artistic look or something, but I do more complex looks on the daily then is what is seen in most tutorials. The tutorial side of the beauty community hasn’t kept up with the skill of avid beauty lovers, and I think that has somewhat contributed to the lack of views for those particular videos.

I think once products became more about creators and the makers, the less attractive the "beauty" space became. Personally, I buy products that I like and work for me, unless there is something harmful in the product itself, I ignore the people behind it.

I definitely agree that everyone is to blame because these big, drama-filled creators wouldn't be anywhere without their following (and many of us have been a part of their world). they then take advantage of our blind support to justify anything they want because no matter what they do anymore there will still be people supporting them. so instead we need to divert our attention to channels like yours where it's a legitimate community for people who love beauty and makeup content, because if we continue to give attention to these big names we're not helping (any press is good press to those big names). im a philosophy and psych major (same year as you) so I love talking about society and human behavior

Lol I purchased the Norvina vol. 2 . It’s a beautiful palette fulfill with color and I’m sad that almost nobody, not even ABH reales tutorial and looks (beyond the week of release) . I’m still with mix feelings about it (I love the palette) .

I just got done watching brit Clark's live about the beauty community and notably that tweet from shane. The chat was mostly promoting our favorite channels that we feel are genuine and that we love. Almost every tag I was like go check out julia! ❤😂 and then I come to your channel and see this new video and it couldn't be more relevant! Love you your awesome! Lol

thank you for pointing out the fact that colourpop produces small in-house batches of their products and how that model is (while not perfect) a more sustainable one. it bothers me when people call colourpop the "fast fashion" of the beauty industry. the problem with fast fashion is that it is unsustainable and comes at the expense of fairly compensated labor. plenty of fast fashion brands are overpriced as FUCK and PLENTY of high-end and luxury makeup is produced in an unsustainable way. dont use discussions of sustainability to fuel your classism, because classism and unsustainability feed into each other. there are PLENTY of criticisms to be made of colourpop, even from the sustainability end (plastic packaging for ex), but sometimes words have meaning and you should be using them correctly.

Haven't bothered to watch bigger beauty channels for a while because of this. Instead I've tried to find smaller channels like yours that include some beauty but also aren't afraid to disclose and keep everything open for conversation. There's no drama. It's fun and good content.

I’m 27. Been watching KZbin beauty videos since 2007 the REAL OG days before PR was even a thing. Those were really the best days. 2007-2012. The big beauty youtubers were Michelle Phan, Panacea81, xsparkage, Misschievous, Queen of Blending, Pixiwoo (creators of Real Techniques) and WhatStyleIsToNickel. I really miss those days and sometimes go back to watch for nostalgia. Most of them never reached 1 million subs, but trust me they were the BIGGEST at the time

You impress me time and time again!!! While the majority of channels regarding the beauty community are producing content with The Who’s, What’s, When’s, and Where’s...You are talking about the Why’s. I am a more educated and better person after I watch any one of your videos.TY!!!xoxoxo

🛎 I love the “it’s debatable” series 🤗 so excited or this video. Also, I really don’t like the channels that revolve around the drama. I used to watch both James Charles and Tati but after everything I immediately unfollowed both. I’m here for a good time not to listen to gossip and drama #dewfairy 🧚🏼♀️

Gizem thank you. No one holds Tati accountable because she has fertility issues🙄
@giissie4 жыл бұрын
Definitely 🙄 Rawbeautykristy had those issues for years, but she always kept her positive vibe and remained drama free. I think just because someone has difficult times doesn’t give them the right to be enabler for drama. 🤗

My answer...greed. In every sense of the word (not just financial). Sadly it tends to ruin most good things, eventually 😔

Totally agree about stan culture, at it's core it's just unhealthy. It's wild to me that it's taken on a neutral to positive connotation given the origin of the word. It was never meant to be aspirational or desirable to be like Stan, he was not a good person.
