Technically true, however, from this very prelude compositions springs from the heart. The prelude accompanies infinitely many tunes, all created in the mind of the listener. Gounod sings one of the tunes. In general I think you should not build on a masterpiece, however, this is so well done that Gounod is forgiven and praised.

I'd say the slides are tasteful because of course the actual melody is by Charles Gounod, a Romantic composer, and is just set to the Bach prelude, so there's no call for period style playing with no slides etc.

Its not Bach's ave maria its from Gounod. The prelude that Gounod used its from Bach (Prelude No.1 in C from well tempered klavier) but the "Ave Maria" as it is now its an arrangement by Gounod.

To be pedantic, JLW plays the Gounod part while the pianist plays the Bach Prelude No.1 in C major! It's rather beautiful, nonetheless :o)

the notes in this song are not complicated, im a first year cello player btw :) but what makes it so hard is all vibratto, haha

But why does it matter? Just because a piece is used often doesn't make it less beautiful. Pachelbel's Canon and Bach's Prelude #1 are used constantly in media, and yet I can't get enough of them.
