Thank you for making this review. Unlike other subjective reviews on KZbin, you presented a scientific comparison backed by real world quantitative values you measured yourself and presented instead of just reading it off some specs sheet. This is what I consider true quality content.

@@JulianKrause Hi Julian, does the AIR mode on Focusrite even come close to a real ISA One's sound? I am asking, because I got the Scarlett 2i2 Gen3, and while I like that AIR mode on it, it adds noise. And according to a sales rep, it's just an EQ. Do you have a real ISA One to compare with? Thank you in advance and for the good work!

Excellent review. I bought the 3rd Gen Focusrite Solo Studio and I'm very pleased with it. No latency that I can notice at all. The mic that's included in the Studio version is pretty good and so are the headphones. Can't go wrong with any of Focusrites products, they're well built and reliable; when you plug it in it just works and stays working.

Brilliant in depth video. I can see you went through some amount of work researching the important factors of what is a good audio interface. I got lucky finding your channel and I subscribed ! My 2nd gen 18i8 developed a hardware fault in the headphone section a few days ago si I call Tech support U.k ( I'm from Limerick, Ireland btw) and even though the warranty was over they decided to send me a replacement! That was really cool of them and I'm hoping it's a 3rd gen they send. Anyways, I just thought I'd show you some appreciation for the great video. Well done , Julian and Hello from Ireland! Tom.

3:05 I just referenced the manual and this device actually only has a frequency response of 20hz to 20000hz, despite the higher sample rates offered. I have a 18i8 gen 2 and it is great for general recording and for use with all of my current instruments. Recently I got a tascam dr-100 mk3 which has a response of up to 80khz! I got it for creating sound effects specifically though.

@@catsfan2937 Interesting. I have never actually tested the actual response. The manual specifies the 20-20000 Hz, so I would assume it was a limitation of the architecture of the ADC and the low pass filter that would have been used with it.

I've been using a 2nd Gen Scarlett 18i8 at home for a few years now, but have been browsing around for something with a much smaller footprint and better direct guitar to VST amp sim RTL & dynamic range for my DIY "poor man's fractal" mobile rig. One that would also replace the current 16 bit Orange OMEC Teleport mini interface that's currently on my "fly date" board. The DBX 286s can add gain if you have a microphone that needs it and it can add some real-time processing, which could be nice for live streaming or podcasts where you won’t or can’t edit the audio afterwards. If you don’t need more than 56 db of gain or the signal processing, skip the extra complexity and cost of the DBX 286.

@DavidHarry

So, after Julian’s excellent technical review, you make no mention what so ever of his considerable efforts, experience and the time taken to produce such a detailed video. Instead, you pick on the USB interface as a bone of contention, which BTW has nothing to do with Julian, and you get that completely wrong. There’s way more difference between the two than just the reversibility. Surely there must be a Facebook page somewhere for people like you.

@@DavidHarry As long as it is a USB 2.0 type port it makes no practical difference from USB port B and C. I don't hit on his effort. It is a nice review. But people look at videos to make their decisions based on other peoples input. And I find it important to point out that it is not a selling point as long as the port supports the same things.

Julian, I am using an amplifier with passive speakers, so I am feeding the output of the soundcard directly to the line input of the amp. It turns out that with most soundcards, I can use only volumes up to 3, which makes me worry that the potentiometer is working in the worst region of linearity and tracking. I would like to hear comments about the volume progression.

Higher EIN with AIR mode on? You sure? Keep in mind that you'd have to revert the high frequency boost provided in this mode as well. I wouldn't be surprised if EIN then turned out to be nearly or totally identical in both cases. BTW, two portable mixer EIN values (input shorted) for reference - Behringer Q1002USB (2014), ca. -126 dBu, and Mackie 402VLZ4 (2017), ca. -131.5 dBu. Something tells me that the good folks at Behringer may not have had an eye on the actual noise performance of the input transistors they were using. Let's hope they've poked their noses into The Art of Electronics 3rd ed. and spotted some more suitable devices by now. Finding something with Rbb'
@JulianKrause
@JulianKrause 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, I did not invert the high frequency boost because this defeats the purpose of the Air mode. Someone who uses the Air mode does this deliberately and will use the high frequency boost in their recording and will also have higher perceived noise floor. Thanks for the other measurements! It is always interesting to see how other devices compare.
@PileOfEmptyTapes
@PileOfEmptyTapes 4 жыл бұрын
@@JulianKrause I get where you're coming from, as that thought had occurred to me as well. Still, it's called "Equivalent *Input* Noise", and I don't think it's input noise's fault if the device decides to have a non-flat frequency response. IMHO without a flat FR, results are no longer comparable. I wouldn't have a problem including the difference in (weighted) overall SNR specs though. Speaking of SNR, let's assume we are sweeping a constant-level sinusoidal input signal across the spectrum and looking at noise in a narrow band around it in order to determine narrowband SNR. Does this change when enabling AIR mode? If not, why would EIN be different? IMHO, EIN is just a handy shorthand for "integrated input noise density". You might find similar phenomena in radio receiver technology - there, rated sensitivity is given for a certain amount of SNR over a given bandwidth, even though varying gain over the band may still affect operation to some degree (requiring more or less output volume at low levels where the AGC runs out of gain, assuming we are talking AM modes). When measuring microphone self-noise, would you take mic frequency response into account? Not sure what's standard in the industry, but I think I would. (On-axis or power response, or even weighted around on-axis? There is some room left for discussion there for sure.) Imagine the same condenser mic capsule and electronics being used for both a regular flat mic and a hand-held vocal mic, just that the latter gets a sizeable electronic highs boost (I would not be surprised if this were the standard approach to condenser vocal mics, actually). The latter would be considered more noisy - is that fair? Looks like the standard approach to self-noise measurement is "calibrate sensitivity at one particular frequency (e.g. 1 kHz), measure noise and be done with it". Maybe we should just differentiate between figures taken this way and actual equivalent input noise. "Plug it in and see how much noise comes out" is a valid use case and may very well be what a musician / user is interested in. If, however, you are interested in what's going on at the physical level, this is not what you want. (With apologies to Paloma Faith - _Do you want a measurement or something beautiful?_ .p) IMHO "calibrate sensitivity at one particular frequency (e.g. 1 kHz), measure noise and be done with it" is a *first-order* approximation. Take FR into account, and it becomes a *second-order* one. Not sure what third order would be, maybe the on-axis vs. power response discussion. People tend to be happy with the first-order approximation because (a) measuring mic FR is a bit of a pain and (b) mics can be pretty flat, besides (c) it mimics practical use as discussed earlier. (a) does not apply to an audio interface. Because of (c), I can understand if someone disagrees with my viewpoint. I just want to make sure we've got the big picture here.
@JulianKrause
@JulianKrause 4 жыл бұрын
@@PileOfEmptyTapes Hey, I’m totally with you. EIN is an approximation. Compensating for the frequency response gets your numbers closer to the true performance of the preamp. In my opinion we would have to go further and not measure with a 150 Ohm load. That's also just an approximation of a typical dynamic mic impedance. To fully characterize the preamp performance, we would have to specify voltage and current noise separately. But I have to confess that at some point it just gets messy. How can somebody that has no background in electrical engineering interpret all this stuff. So, I think you have to approximate to bring meaning to the measurements for consumers. That's also why I don't compensate for the frequency response and I use a 1kHz tone as my reference level in my EIN measurements. Same goes for microphones. When people buy a mic with a high frequency boost, they want to have that specific sound and don't EQ the mic flat. Flattening out the frequency response might make the measurements technically more comparable but, in my opinion, it also moves the resulting number further from how the noise is perceived. In the end, it is all a compromise. There is no use for a complex measurement that nobody understands.

@gracenotes5379 5 жыл бұрын
Excellent, clear and useful presentation! However, one thing remains unclear to me: you chose to specify maximum system gain at 47 dBFS@0dBu. To me, 47dBFS is a level, whereas 47dB would be a gain. Do you mean that a -47dBu input signal is sufficient to produce 0dBu at the output at the maximum gain setting? Or perhaps you mean -47dBu will result in 0dBFS digital level at maximum gain? The latter seems more likely, but I might have found a different way to express it than you did.
@JulianKrause
@JulianKrause 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, the maximum system gain is a theoretical number. If you would feed a 0dBu signal into the interface at maximum gain it would produce a digital signal with 47dBFS. On the flipside it also means that when you send a -47dBu signal into the interface at max gain you will get a digital signal of 0dBFS. I specify gain in dBFS@0dBu because you have to tave into account for the convertion factor of the digital to analog converter. Stating gain in dB will not tell you where your digital signal is going to endd up at.

Most people say that for the sm7b a preamp is needed, to reduce the noise floor and increase the volume. But with the umc 202 a preamp doesn't bring me any positive does it?

@@Astrovic1 hi, I know this comment is a year old, but I want to explain it for you. Audio interfaces have preamps in them, one for every microphone input. Your UMC202HD has 2 inputs, and therefore 2 preamps. Different preamps have different noise floors. You _can_ buy preamps separately, but they will be of no use to you because they need circuitry to them work (the rest of an interface, for example). Your UMC202HD should be able to power an sm7b fine, but I'll talk about what you said anyway. Distortion isn't something you want, it's just a result of how interfaces work. The lower the distortion, the better. If you were going to buy a new interface, you want the distortion (TDH) to be as low as possible. Some interfaces can power less sensitive microphones because of the variation in preamps, some are less powerful. A good interface for ~300 Euros is the Moto M2 (as Julian mentioned), for 150 I'd recommend a Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen (the one shown in this video) Hopefully this was helpful, though you've probably figured it out already c:

I'm not sure whether to get a Headphone DAC (eg. Creative Sound Blaster) or this Focusrite Scarlett so I can connect my headphones to it and also my studio monitors and sub. Is a dedicated headphone DAC like the Creative Sound Blaster for example have better specs in terms of powering your headphones than this Focusrite?

Can you set a Custom Mix in the Control software just like with the 4i4? That way you can set f.e. 50% volume direct monitor signal on the 4i4 instead of ON or OFF like on the 2i2. If you can't I'ld rather get the 4i4.

As far as I know this is not possible with the 2i2.

NO, NO! That "down-side" it's an up-side actually. You don't want to fry unprotected dynamic microphones when somebody connects an unknown microphone. Thumbs UP Focusrite!
@monomono

uh, dude. dynamics dont fry with ph48. no beginner has ribbons anyway.

It's an upside indeed. But also dynamics don't fry with phantom power. You got it half right ;)

The “down-side” is a “down-side”. You don’t fry dynamic microphones as phantom power has no effect what so ever on dynamic microphones. The voltage exist between pins 1&2 and pins 1&3. There is no potential difference between pins 2&3. So there is no danger to dynamic microphones. They don’t even see a potential difference. It is only a possible danger to some ribbon mics. But no beginner has ribbon mics. And anyone who does have expensive vintage ribbon mics would know best practices to maintain ribbon mics.

Note that you should use Air sparingly. Basically on whatever you want to stand out in the mix. Using it on everything creates a real high-end mess.

This is probably *the* channel to go to for audio interface reviews - I can only think of a couple of others that are almost comparable, but the level of detail crammed into 12-13 minutes is always spot on - thank you 👌
